I had a Golden Honorary Membership at The Place for a few years, free entry any night at any time, was brilliant! ;D We used to get 3 of us in on it regularly with a bit of sleight of hand Inset was owned by John Donnelly at that time, believe he had an equally salubrious establishment in Longton at the same time, can't remember the name of it, down a side street somewhere near Woolies. In it's heyday The Place had to have been one of the best nightclubs in the country imho. I'm sure the other club he owned was the Apollo

I have vague memories that when I was a kid in the 70s there was a Port Vale bar opposite the spikey man on the Lewis' building in Hanley. Can anyone confirm this or did I dream it. It was called The Gaiety in the 70s but used to be The Port Vale, Many of the older drinkers in Hanley always referred to it as The Old Port Vale.

Few that I remember were Robateaux's near Three Tuns at top of Bucknall Road up Hanley, I think it was also the Bier keller during the day. Highway Man out near Alton Towers. Shelleys, already mentioned. And what was the one on Old Hall Street near Hanley Bus Station, right opposite the Navy recruitment centre. You entered on Street level, but went down stairs.

Actually better than most of the clubs in the city Rock night Thursdays was pretty friendly, Fridays disco type towards the end was the worse night for trouble, Olivers in Leek Neil Baker on the door was pretty rough, not a club but the Hope & Anchor Cellerhead was heaving as was the Out of Town Hanley, Top Rank, Baileys, Ritzy, Sammies, The Place all gone some great nights.
