Some truly dire teams playing out truly dire games. Other than Germany and perhaps Argentina every other team has looked somewhere between mediocre and shocking.

I normally go along for the World Cup ride, and accept the good, bad, and the ugly.
You always get your fair share of absolute dross, but some of the shite we're seeing this time 'round is on another level.
It's all I can manage to stop myself nodding off.

Give it time, teams are generally wary of losing their first game leading to negative performances.

I'd say when everyone has more to play for it'll pick up, like having to win to progress to the last 16...
First matches at all tournaments are usually cagey with teams looking not to lose as much as to win...
These matches will be forgotten in a week or so...

Germany 4 years ago was crap. This is an open tournament, all we are currently seeing is teams too scared to loose the 1st game and with the usual FIFA rules to refs we don't see too many free flowing games. Its watchable and enjoyable and I would argue Germany weren't that great. On the upside its easy to pick the result of games and therefore easy money ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/0m0lbCuTEBzaRn6f8QaM.gif)

Goals are well down on past World Cups at the corresponding stage of games.
But, beyond that, there's just a general air of complete wankness about the games.
God knows what % can be attributed to the ball, the altitude, the air of caution?
They always say the ball goes a long, long way further when they play golf in the Alps, or when the rugby teams tour South Africa , so maybe this is the prime factor, above and beyond the vagaries of the ball?
It can only get better.

They increased the numbers to 32 to give more chance to the African and Asian countries. It results in some pretty ordinary teams getting in Some good European teams fail....Ireland,Poland,Sweden,Czecho.

I would argue Germany weren't that great. We've seen twenty teams now and I put them streets ahead of anything I've seen. Of course we won't know exactly how good until we establish just how poor the Aussies are.

Bang on Sheikh.
Football is rife with poor players throughout the world. There is a handful of good players. They are also playing with a beach ball in half full stadiums and those facking stupid horn things. Fuck 'em off - watching it is unbearable.
Top of the wankness are England - overpaid overhyped prima donnas who can't even pass and move. Heskey, Milner SWfuckingP. Even the Manager is losing the plot and he is one of the best of all time. SHITE!!!!!!

Of course we won't know exactly how good until we establish just how poor the Aussies are. They have been more clinical I grant you that, but streets ahead? I don't think so. The aussies played deep to get a 0-0 (sounds familiar) and got undone early on, and besides anyone who plays Garcia up front must be a truely awful side

The first round of games has been dire in plenty of other world cups. the early games are often cagey.
1966 - England 0 Uruguay 0
hardy a momentous start was it ?
This tourno may carry on in the same vein, but then again, we can still hope for better....a'la mexico 70 please...

Even if you go solely on goals (and that's dangerous as you can get decent 0-0s and crap 2-2s) we're a long way down on par for 10 games in..........
2010 - 16
2006 - 23 2002 - 27 1998 - 26 1994 - 23 1990 - 25

Adidas sponsor the league I think, as Nike sponsor the prem so we get Nike balls. Surely an entirely new ball should be created for the world cup though? Not one that the Germans have been playing and training with for a year.

I have high hopes of Group H. The Spanish look full of goals and Chile line up in some manic 3-1-3-3 system and matched Brazil for goalscoring in qualifying. Honduras sounds like an anal medical complaint and the Swiss remind me of cheese. Roll on Group H!
