Look at the teams still to play their first game though. Portugal, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Italy, Spain. The draw has the more entertaining teams on one side of the draw (not played yet). It's pretty enjoyable being here in SA n watching every game

My take on this subject is that all the lesser teams that were have more or less caught up now thus not really seeing the so called big teams hammering the so called lesser teams.
If you take out maybe the top 4 or 5 teams in the world then the next 20 or so are much of a muchness imho.

I agree with this thread, i think the standard of football these days is no where near the standard of world cups in the 70s and 80s and even the 90s. Teams in world cups gone by and i mean all the main contendors were full of world class players and some of the matches were awesome with some wonder goals but not now. You may get two world class players in each of the top teams but thats about it, the rest are just average

Brazil's 4th goal in the 1970 world cup final. There is no chance of anything like that ever happening again, or Maradona's solo goal vs England in 1986. These glimpses of amazingness don't occur much anymore. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/4tzqvp1fxEemag_TAXLJ.gif)

There were some amazing goals and amazing moves in the 70s and 80s with pure football genius but it just seems to be a midfield scrap these days with stray passes and the ball out of play too often

I'm quite enjoying it so far. The set-plays have not been great, new ball or no new ball. We still have Brazil to come, who should be the most entertaining side; and we haven't seen the favourites yet. Italy, Argentina and Holland all have sides to spank before Round two, as well.
And it is colourful.

fuckin pisser! wet meself when i saw that! haha yeah, its been shit so far, ive worked everyday of the world cup so far, 2-10 so i'm not that bothered that its been shit, now i've got 2 days off, hoping to see a my 10k ticket NZ win, brazil pull out all the stops and show up everyone else who has played so far, that game that should be good portugal vs ivory coast (the african team that most people rate as bein the only real contenders for the WC), they've really got a group of death there. Probably literally in the case of north korea. and then spain on wednesday ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/kwfoKwtHI0jglJZ4qZf6.gif) can't wait !! tbh, the ball aint much cop, no one seems to be able to play with it, let alone goalkeepers. bring back that leaden orange thing with actual stitching on it!

It does seem a little out of order that the Germans and the other Bundesliga players have had six months to get used to the universally criticized ball.
If it's truly that different from a normal ball and takes a while to get used to, then why should one nation be allowed to practise with it ahead of time?
I agree that this World Cup has been a little underwhelming so far, given that we haven't had one stand-out exciting match yet, but it might pick up.

Germany 4 years ago was crap. This is an open tournament, all we are currently seeing is teams too scared to loose the 1st game and with the usual FIFA rules to refs we don't see too many free flowing games. Its watchable and enjoyable and I would argue Germany weren't that great. On the upside its easy to pick the result of games and therefore easy money ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/0m0lbCuTEBzaRn6f8QaM.gif) I thought Germany four years ago was great. Plenty of great games and great goals. Pisses all over the shite we've seen in SA so far.

I don't think Germany were exclusively allowed to use the ball. I know that other leagues around Europe were offered it and chose not to. Still if they were knocking it about maybe they've learned how to keep it down as it seems to take off with only the slightest touch meaning short passing teams will succeed, so that's England buggered!
I agree with most on here that games so far has been poor and I'm not holding my breath for Brazil as they are not the exciting team of 40 years ago anymore, a lot of Brazilians (from the country not attractively shaved people) hate Dunga as they feel he plays very boring football. With Inter winning the Champions League and our beloved lads playing with a 'hold what we've got' attitude like a lot of other teams, Liverpool, Birmingham, etc, no wonder I enjoy match of the 70s so much.
Come on Spain!

They were all allowed to use the new ball since February (I think) but only Germany took them up on the offer. There were a few leagues who are sponsored by Adidas took up the offer but as I said earlier bit hard for other leagues to use the balls when they have sponsors ball that have to be used or else they lose the deals

Another dire game. I'm beginning to think there's no hope for this tournament. Even the games at sea level are absolute shockers. Chile are the saviours of this tournament. Chile and their mad 3133 formation. We'll all be in Chile tops by the 11th July, mark my words.

hmm, i only really listening to ivory coast v portugal on the radio at work with the stream open in the background to flip to when there was an incident, needless to say i barely had to do so. This was the match that i think everybody looked at after the draw as being the tastiest of the group games and it was a shocker.
if this is the group of death it's more like death by old age than anything exciting.

I signed up for the 3 free £10 bets at Billy Hill's and am finding that even a modest wager can provide a little interest. I'm up to £35 so far even after losing a fiver when NZ equalised.

If I was watching the games purely in anticipation of entertainment, then I think I'd have committed suicide by now.
Thankfully having so many bets on has given me an interest, so even the most tedious 0-0 draw still has me shouting at the telly.
I'm a bit concerned about the Chile game tomorrow as I've not got any financial interest either way in that one, and so I might have to find something else to do. I was in the same boat today with Slovakia and New Zealand so took the little 'un to Blackbrook Zoo instead. That was the most entertainment I've had all tournament as we got to see an emu do a piss right by the fence.
