If I was watching the games purely in anticipation of entertainment, then I think I'd have committed suicide by now. Thankfully having so many bets on has given me an interest, so even the most tedious 0-0 draw still has me shouting at the telly. I'm a bit concerned about the Chile game tomorrow as I've not got any financial interest either way in that one, and so I might have to find something else to do. I was in the same boat today with Slovakia and New Zealand so took the little 'un to Blackbrook Zoo instead. That was the most entertainment I've had all tournament as we got to see an emu do a piss right by the fence. Well that was my plan too, but my betting has been shocking so far this tournament (apart from the 1-1 last night). I think I may plump for these 3 free bets and call it quits after that. I'm almost glad I am working tonight, so will only catch glimpses of the game. Having said that no-one seems to be coming to the bar to watch the games anyway, so I'll end up having to stand up and watch a shite game. I remain confident that when teams are less afraid of losing in the second round of matches we'll see some better stuff.

Another dire game. I'm beginning to think there's no hope for this tournament. Even the games at sea level are absolute shockers. Chile are the saviours of this tournament. Chile and their mad 3133 formation. We'll all be in Chile tops by the 11th July, mark my words. And that's a fact. If the game against Honduras tomorrow isn't 4-3 I'll eat my scrote. VAMOS CHILE!!!

Each progressive World Cup gets shitter.
Football ain't what it used to be. Gifted footballers have been replaced by dull athletes.

Is there anything that can be done to change things?
It'd be frightening and depressing if this was the template we have to look forward to in future World Cups?
In the battle for the remote controls, people are having to justify watching this ahead of Holby City and Gok Wan. Shit are they are, it's a tough sell at the moment.

Too much tippy-tappy. You get two teams taking it in turns to attack, with absolutely no pressure on the ball. One team's goalkeeper receives the ball. He passes it to the centre-backs, who play it amongst themselves and the midfield for 10 minutes until they either lose it to the opposition defence or give it to the opposition goalkeeper. The same process repeats for another ten minutes. Slow and boring as hell to watch.
Where are all the genuinely world class players? Spain are probably the best team there, but they're hardly Brazil with Pele or the Netherlands with Cruyff, are they?

It was so much better 4 years ago, I'm blaming the vuvzelas.
Although I'm quite absorbed by the game at the moment, its not high on quality like I was expecting

Things should liven up after the first batch of games, once we get into the latter groups games with teams needing points it should open up a bit, it seems the tactic this year, by most teams, is to pack the defence with two banks of four, but i think and hope this will change as the tournament progresses with teams needing wins/points.

And another thing. What's with all these slow motion replays close up of the players and managers. Just show us the FUCKING game please. Man alive. It had to happen, the commentator said only a Brazilian could score that ,after the 1st goal ,pure class of wankiness

Wrong MD. Too many athletes, not enough flair.
Pulis must be wetting his knickers.
Thank god for the tippy tappy kings Spain, Germany and Argentina.

In the battle for the remote controls, people are having to justify watching this ahead of Holby City and Gok Wan. Shit are they are, it's a tough sell at the moment. Socrates is a passionate advocate of a radical change to the game to compensate for the enormous steps forward in terms of fitness, stamina and sheer size of modern players. He suggests making the game 9-a-side, among other things. Would that help?

I must admit that I was having a conversation tonight where the idea of 10-a-side was floated.
I think something radical will probably emerge in the next 20-30 years to try and compensate for the dull competitiveness that can now be achieved merely by having an athletic, well-drilled unit.
It would at least be interesting to see what kind of pattern of play you'd see emerging in 10 v 10 games

Wrong MD. Too many athletes, not enough flair. Pulis must be wetting his knickers. Thank god for the tippy tappy kings Spain, Germany and Argentina. Flair is definitely missing. There are so few directly attacking players who are actually any good. Messi trying to take on the entire opposition defence was pretty good to watch, but there's not a lot else. Germany were good (never, ever bet against the Germans), but that Australia side were pretty awful, let's see how they get on against some stronger teams. You've got to agree that it's been slow paced and boring? I'd kill for a team playing 'hit and hope', chucking throw-ins into the box and putting the opposition under pressure right now. This boring 'wait your turn' tippy tappy is killing the entertainment. There's just no urgency, no pressure, no tackles flying in. Watch the three games tomorrow and tell me that the basic structure of the game isn't two teams taking it in turns to pass the ball forward over the course of 5 - 10 minutes before giving it to the opposition defenders and letting them slowly play the ball forward. There's just no spark, no fire. The Ivory Coast game had a bit of promise when the Androgynous Wonder started cheating and the tackles started to fly in with tempers flared, but it petered out to nothing.

no points for a draw unless it's 2-2 or over? I think you'd see a hell of a lot of dull 0-0 draws magically turning into 2-2ers in the last 5 minutes if you implemented that.

but then again, why would you turn a 0-0 draw into a 2-2? wouldn't you defend the 1-0 / 0-1?

I don't think it's any more complicated than the bigger teams are playing incredibly poorly.
Apart from Germany, none of them have turned up. It's got nothing to do with supposedly dull 'tippy tappy' football (and this turn of phrase is increasingly annoying me now!) I think (hope) with Spain today that we might see a team that play as genuine contenders. They crushed Poland in their last warm-up game and they have tended to be absolutely magnificent to watch. Fingers crossed that Spain are able to move the tournament up a few gears.

I normally go along for the World Cup ride, and accept the good, bad, and the ugly. You always get your fair share of absolute dross, but some of the shite we're seeing this time 'round is on another level. It's all I can manage to stop myself nodding off. If anything, it's got even worse!!

The group stage has never been as exiting as some are making out in my opinion. Things will get progressively better from now as the games become more crucial and everyone gets to grip with this ball and tournament in general. Nothing can change the fact that I have seen most of the players ad nauseum over the last few years though.
