I follow gymnastics pretty closely, and gymnastics is a sport in which Russians excel, and it's also a sport that hasn't been affected by doping scandals. There is the strong hope among gymnastics fans that Russian gymnasts will be allowed to compete at the Olympics under a neutral flag, much as they did in the 2018 Olympics. Insiders seem to think that it will be allowed with each sports federation deciding for themselves. By the way, speaking from some inside knowledge, WADA is an organization riddled with politics, a degree of corruption, and lack of common sense or consistency. Just because an athlete was banned doesn't mean they were guilty/tested positive (e.g., Justin Gatlin's first supposed doping incident, the second one was real though), and just because an athlete was not punished doesn't mean they tested negative. Most of the time the blame lies more with the sports governing bodies than with WADA per se, though. My wife has a Latvian friend that's involved in gymnastics and she says that Russian gymnastics are not as clean as they should be.

Volcanoes usually give warning signs before they erupt e.g. series of minor earth tremors and increased emissions of gasses such as SO2 before they erupt allowing authorities to evacuate vulnerable areas. If the N.Z. authorities observed these warning signs they should never have allowed tourists anywhere near the place. They knew White Island was still an active volcanic area and should have reacted accordingly. I have climbed a couple of volcanoes, Vesuvius, which is a doddle and Fogo on the Cape Verde islands which is still active, but gives of warning signs when it is about to erupt. Although the volcano had shown signs of increased activity, they were at a similar level to previous activity where there was no eruption. It is also believed that the eruption was triggered by water getting into a magma chamber rather than an increase in pressure over time. If this is correct, then the heavily monitored site would have given little very little warning over and above the usual background readings.

I'm retracting what I said earlier in this thread. I've just finished watching the third episode, and it's turgid dross. The kids enjoyed it though.

I've no problem with them making 007 a woman, it could be a positive plot aid, but if the plot line proceeds to portray her as more capable and him as a dinosaur just to suit feminist propaganda they can fuck right off.... They've being doing "Bond is a dinosaur" years, possibly decades.

Having to cite an incident from 14 years ago suggests that the Police are not trigger happy. Cressida Dick Was the officer in charge that day & they promoted her... What's that got to do with anything? You are suggesting that the police are trigger happy because they killed someone 14 years ago.

Pretty sure if they could have subdued him and arrested him they would have, UK police aren’t known for being trigger happy, but You’ve got a maniac running around randomly stabbing people with what looks like a suicide vest on, he’s on the floor probably threatening to detonate it, I don’t see what option they had ? Have you ever heard of Jean Charles da Silva e de Menezes...🇧🇷 Having to cite an incident from 14 years ago suggests that the Police are not trigger happy.

BREAKING NEWS: The Queen has given permission for the Duke of York to 'step back from public duties for the foreseeable future' amid criticism over his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein "Given permission to step back" is shorthand for go and find a hole to hide in as we don't want to see you again.

Watched it with the kids and enjoyed it as older family viewing. That's where I set my expectations and it hit that benchmark.

suppose he was stupid enough to go to epstein's house even after he epstein was convicted, so maybe he is stupid enough to allow epstein to take a picture of him with an underage girl he was abusing ? ... might well have been for blackmail purposes ? I guess that one issue that might come out is...are there any many more?. is it likely that there is only one person that he met in these circumstances.. ...particularly as this accuser is 17 which would not be an offence in itself in this country..... leaving aside the trafficking issues of course. I think that there lies the problem. In itself, doing a 17 year old in the UK is not an offence, the issue here is the association with Epstein and the ability to plausibly deny any knowledge of what Epstein was about and by extension what was Andy up to in his numerous stop overs. It was interesting that the friendship with the alleged pimp, Ghislaine Maxewell was not questioned in any way. I'm guessing she was off limits as nothing has been proven about her activities etc.

On another note; Emily Matliss, yes I certainly would. She certainly has an interesting affect on her interviewees. The Prince Andrew interview was as compelling and uncomfortable,in a different way admittedly,as her discussion with Anthony Scaramucci. Did she get Scaramucci to do the fandango?

Where did that photo of Andrew and a young bikini clad woman go? I have no recollection of seeing it. I must have been mistaken, but I stand by my decision.

Just looked at the most popular comments about O'Neil potentially coming to Stoke, and they overwhelmingly of the opinion that Stoke is not good enough for him. I'm now quite happy about the prospect of him joining us now! Have you been on that Vale forum again? Oops, I should have mentioned that the comments were on the BBC website. ...I'll make an edit.

The first half of Full Metal Jacket when they in basic training is some of the best cinema ever, in my opinion.

I see no difference between this achievement and that of Roger Bannister, in fact I'd go as far as saying that the sub 2 hour marathon distance is a greater accomplishment. Sports science has evolved massively since Bannister's time, yet the sub 2 hours time has never been challenged in a race. Running at 13mph for 2 hours is extraordinary by any standards.
It's not an official world record, but it's finally proven that a human can achieve that time in that distance, this will only encourage athletes to attempt to reach the goal in race conditions.

Apparently it's National Coming Out Day, today. I can't see it being popular this year, it's pissing it down.

My dad told me a bit of family/Oswald Mosley history this week, it turns out that my Granddad was amongst the crowd that gave Mosley and his Black Shirts a bit of a kicking when they were campaigning here in the early 1930's.
Nice one, Granddad!

As a leaver, I welcome the decision, Bojo went too far and needed to be slapped down. Assuming the EU agree to an extension (I can't believe they won't), then Boris can call an election effectively on a no deal Brexit and if he gets the numbers, then we will leave with the blessing of Parliament.
