Another vote for The Music
One of the best live gigs I’ve ever seen was a usual sweaty night Saturday night at the underground from a band called the Infadels.
Not saying they should’ve been big but was a brilliant gig (helped by a few cans of red stripe)

Heard a belter from Ned’s Atomic Dustbin earlier😏 I absolutely love Ned’s. Saw them in Bradford in 92 on their Are you normal tour and they were superb that night. Then saw them 20 years later in 2012 at Brixton Academy with Cud as support. Have watched Ned’s regularly since as well as Cud. So a shout out to Cud…I seem to remember a certain Mr Orbs being in attendance that night too.

I note quite a few dingy bars in Manchester do the same. Makes sense. Bit harsh on the U set ground I guess, some cracking gigs have gone on there in the past 10 years or so

This song would have been massive if by an established big band I was going to say The Blue Collars. Could have at least made it to national level, they were brilliant.

Dublin's Whipping Boy...released an absolute masterpiece in "Heartworm" in 1995 and got washed away by the tide of britpop. Album stands up to this day, criminal they never got their dues Love this, thanks for sharing. As someone said, Fontaines DC...

Shack’s album was great and all - think this is their second album. Not heard this before, it's fantastic! How on earth did this not make it? Always remember this on Trigger happy TV….These guys were the Pale Fountains…Made Pacific street , which was also stunning

The list seems endless. Fountains of Wayne were one hit wonders but many consider the Collingwood/Schlesinger songwriting duo to be the best since Lennon/McCartney. I love them and 4 of their 5 albums are up there with my all-time favourites. Mostly Autumn should be loads bigger. The only band's music to make me cry at a gig - when they get all those layers going, it's incredible: Perhaps mostly for fans of melodic and classic rock with Gilmour-inspired guitar solos and keyboards. Their most recent 3 albums are probably their best too. There were loads of good bands in and around Stoke in the mid-2000s who had the potential to be big given the right breaks - I saw Big Cash Prizes mentioned already. Alfa 9 (still around), Skin Tight Toy, Agent Blue, Kamikaze Pilots and *cough* ...I won't say it. My first thought was Ballboy, another great band who never made it big: I think they reformed last year.

Reminds me I have a playlist for this kind thing - I've been going through every year since 1960 for 3 or 4 years now:
I'm hoping Monika Roscher gets big enough to bring her band to the UK. Like nothing I've heard before - bigband mixing rock, jazz, pop and who knows what else:

I sometimes think bands don’t make it big because of the name they’ve given themselves. Funny story, well, not really funny but a story nonetheless, bunch of mates of mine wanted start a band years ago, they were never going get anywhere with it but wanted stick a few tunes on tape. Anyroad, they came up with the band name "The Know" (No idea why, but whatever), anyroad, they go down the studio to record their first bunch of tunes, fella there asks 'em "So what's the band called lads?" they say "The Know" fella says "What?! You don't know, well no worries I'm sure you'll come up with something eventually". Needless to say they ditched the band name that night! Sorry if already mentioned, but The Walkmen? The Rat is an absolute belter and some of their other stuff very decent too. Bloody hell, anna heard that song in a good decade or so, I'm off to listen to it right now! Man, listening The Walkmen on Youtube & I got recommended another band from that era I anna listened to in years... John Butler Trio!

Great band but stretching the definition of not making it big I reckon. 30 year career, dozen studio albums, 2 million monthly listens on Spotify. You could argue they deserve mainstream crossover I guess, but would that even be what they want...

The Teardrop Explodes, saw them back in the day at Keele University, fantastic live band.
On a side note, there's a great doc currently on sky arts about The Specials, well worth a watch. Probably did make it but could they have been bigger ?

Could easily hear them playing when we were having dinner in our hotel. Sat down at the bar and guess who walked in- John Butler. Bought him a beer and had a good chat (he really is very small)

H (Also, I may or may not have been a member of Big Cash Prizes) Then I may or may not have played in a band before a band you were in at a gig in The Glebe. So you may or may not have been in The Tonics? Didn't expect them to come up on this thread. And I may or may not have been there....

And I may or may not have been there.... The Cakes. I saw The Tonics live over 10 times - one of my favourite bands at the time, so I can't believe I forgot to mention them in my list of local bands above!

I sometimes think bands don’t make it big because of the name they’ve given themselves. It served the Arctic Monkeys well when that div Noel Gallagher took the piss out of their name though When I first moved up here a lad I lift shared with kept playing a cd where the music sounded like knock off Coldplay - can't remember the name of them for the life of me and think was part of their issue as apparently they changed it a few times. Turns out he'd been the bassist in this band and they were ridiculously close to making it - were on Jo Wiley and John Peel a few times, had played various festivals and had been sitting on a 3 album deal with EMI(?) but were hedging their bets before signing as had expected other offers following festival success. However, the deal got pulled as Yellow broke and the festivals dried up soon after as they genuinely just sounded like a slightly shitter version of Coldplay. Watched them doing a gig in Dundee and the front man defo had it, the songs were orate and could see why they'd had a shot but equally it was obvious why Coldplay blew them out of the water.
