Big Country should have been bigger. But we’re they big enough? I've seen them at a packed NEC, 12,000? in attendance surely that's an example of making it. Microdisney never got a tour or sold albums in any decent number but had a cult following of fans who religiously thought they were the best band out there.

Still finding it difficult to measure success. Been listening to the Bluetones this week nostalgically and can’t work out if they made it big or not? Bluetonic, the debut album by the Bluetones, was the album that actually knocked What's The Story Morning Glory off the no 1 spot Mark Morris is a bit of prick though Indeed so does that mean they made it big?

It is as far as I’m concerned, but was that at the height of their popularity or a nostalgia trip?

Shack’s album was great and all - think this is their second album. Not heard this before, it's fantastic! How on earth did this not make it?

The Music are a good shout, their debut album is one of my favourites.
Other than that, I think it's all about personal favourites. I liked a lot of bands in my teens who were probably absolute shite in the eyes of others:
The Music The Maccabees The Subways The Rascals (although Miles Kane has done alright for himself) The Delays Jimmy Eat World Sunshine Underground Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Mystery Jets
Whatever happened to Kwabs? His first album was class.

Expecting to Fly, the debut album by the Bluetones, was the album that actually knocked What's The Story Morning Glory off the no 1 spot Mark Morris is a bit of prick though Indeed so does that mean they made it big? i would say yes at the time. You would have to sell alot of albums and quite big to knock Oasis off the number 1 spot, so, I would say big at that time. They still do sell out tours but to 1000 capacity venues

"NME described Mick Head as "a lost genius and among the most gifted British songwriters of his generation". No shit, the songwriting is approaching Ray Davies level of quality, fantastic heads up!

If I were to proffer the name of a band it would be Cardiacs. Unfortunately it must have taken me around ten years to understand what the fuss was all about but when I finally got there it was well worth it. Original and amazing, the work of a genius.
This is one of the most wonderful tributes I've ever seen for a band, written before Tim Smith died but it captures the essence of the band beautifully.

I sometimes think bands don’t make it big because of the name they’ve given themselves. It served the Arctic Monkeys well when that div Noel Gallagher took the piss out of their name though

Guitars and catchy lyrics that were rife at the time, yet it didn't really happen for them.

A thing of absolute beauty ...
There's only five (brilliant) albums to go at but you might as well start with 'The Colour of Spring' (their biggest selling record) as anywhere.

Adorable had 2 absolute belters in the late 80s. Heaven knows how they didn’t crack the charts

I think you can make it big momentarily, but you do need staying power. A couple of bands I thought should have been bigger:
Taxxi (absolutely solid song writers) The Records (some of the best power pop music I've ever listened to - Starry Eyes is a masterpiece)

The Associates. Sulk has to be one of the most underrated albums of the early 80s.
And The Sound. They did some great tunes but got lost behind echo and the bunnymen and similar bands. Quite tragic about the singer too

Dunno I think gene were big enough, decent band actually, been pretty 'forgotten' I guess. Be my guide be my light an absolute banger I think they did were decent size around 1995 but kind of died a slow death. I love "For The Dead" and Olympian. They are one of the best band's that I have ever seen live. I met Martin Rossiter at a Sleeper gig at the 100 Club in Soho in 2019. He was a top man. When I was telling my mrs & mates who I had met, no one had a clue who he or who the band was. He works in the music department at Brighton University now
