Fascinating programme last night on BBC4 on Microdisney who mainly passed me by at the time. They made 5 albums with Rough Trade and Virgin so in theory everything was in their favour and were featured by John Peel and the OGWT. Ditched by Virgin after two albums then the two main protagonists resurfaced as the Fatima Mansions and the High Llamas the latter of which I quite liked. Anyone got any artists to big up apart from Ren

Cocteau Twins. Very influential in the dream pop/shoegaze genre with a passionate and faithful fan base. One of my favourite bands of the early 80s to mid 90s before they split.

Badfinger. One of the saddest stories in rock. Did some great tunes but were exploited by an awful manager.
A couple of one album wonders thar disappeared / split
The LAs Milltown Brothers Ride (some success but could have been bigger).

Interesting thread but how do you benchmark success? Can think of quite a few I think should have been bigger but maybe they were big enough🤔

Just keeping it to bands playing rock music this century, or else the list would be huuuuge!
In no particular order ...
The Music The View Midlake The Answer Wolfmother I Am Kloot Turin Brakes The Horrors The Distillers The Vines
No doubt, there are loads more!

The Music was one of my choices and would definitely say they never really made it big but some may disagree with that. In fact you could say most of those had reasonable success

Another one on my list. Some brilliant short pop songs. The afterbirth of Cast was a decent substitute though

Always thought FM had the tools to be bigger than they were. Very much a wrong time/wrong place band.

Interestingly a presenter quoted Nilsson being blown away by Without You convinced that it was a Beatles track. I had a few of their singles on vinyl back in the day and played Day after day into the ground.

Always thought the Verve had the potential to match Oasis. You can't have The Verve as a "Band who never made it big" otherwise you have to also include Ocean Colour Scene, Pulp, Manic Street Preachers, The Charlatans, Shed Seven, James, Cast, Space, Stereophonics, Supergrass etc...

Stoke 's own Big Cash Prizes were ace, pissed all over most bands around at the time. Too honest about being Stokies if they'd claimed to be Mancs, or even Scousers, they would have got more attention.

Interesting thread but how do you benchmark success? Can think of quite a few I think should have been bigger but maybe they were big enough🤔 Indeed. Of those that should have been bigger, how much bigger? U2 bigger? Artic Monkeys bigger? A lot of them just seem like above average indie bands in a very crowded field. I'm not sitting back thinking they should be household names.

I was thinking of bands that deserved to make a decent income from their recordings but didn't.

Big Star
Wally (prog rockers with a hint of folk, made 2 albums, one produced by Bob Harris)
If we are including solo artists, Nick Drake.

Urban Hymns is a classic album no doubt but to be one of the biggest bands of all time you need more longevity and multiple platinum albums. They’re great but could have been right up there with the best.

So sad that he and Tommy Evans both took their own lives.
