Someone at work asked me today who our biggest rival is, and I didn’t really know what to say.
My instant reaction was the Vale but we haven’t played them for 20 odd years and I never even think about them anymore.
Is it just based on geography or more on recent big games?
I’d probably say it was Baggies then, but I don’t think they’d say us?
Who are our biggest rivals?

Because of our geographical location we haven’t got one unless you include the Vale

Take your pick from this bunch Vale Derby Wolves Baggies. Non of them really stand out as a direct rivals possibly Port vale as we share the same city but hardly ever meet. Wolves would say the Baggies & they would say Blues Villa & the Wolves. Derby would consider Forest as there rivals being closer.

For me it'd be...
Vale. Wolves. Birmingham/Derby/West Brom.

We ain’t got one really - it was Vale and Crewe for a few seasons but it’s really a big city or area thing - Burnley - Blackburn - Preston and possibly Blackpool is a pretty feisty 4 way rivalry as is Wolves, West Brom, Brum and Villa - Forest, Leicester, Derby is also pretty fierce…..

It's Vale but they have been shit for a while. Playing Vale is always a must win for bragging rights, we can deal with losing to any team just not the Vale. We have to beat them always.

We simply don’t have a game anymore where there is a fierce rivalry. It’s sad.

Don't think we have one really
Couldn't care enough about the local teams at all personally and the Birmingham teams have their own nearest rivals over us .

We don’t need to create a rivalry, that’s just sad, we have one that has been with us for a long long time and will be with us for a long long time more - and it’s vale.
Of course season to season you get mini rivalries like Stockport, the baggies (usually in the same division) and even Arsenal to a degree.
But our only constant rival is vale, which is great, as they are usually even worse than us!!

I don't think we really have one now but perhaps in the relatively recent past you could make an argument for the Baggies on geographical grounds and that we always used to make a big thing of being their bogey team when Mowbray was their manager.
In the seventies with Banks,Hudson, Greenhoff et al maybe Wolves or Derby but in saying that they probably saw the Villa and Forest as their own biggest rivals.

As has been mentioned before, any Stokies South of Stone see Wolves as our biggest rival & always have. Staffords a pretty even split town between Stoke & Wolves fans. Express and Stars sold in the southern side of the town, whilst the Sentinels sold in the northern parts. There was a time more back in the 80's or 90's when pubs were known as either Stoke or Wolves pubs dotted around the town aswell..
As for more recent match ups due to league status, suppose that'll be WBA or Birmingham City. Stoke v WBA is known as the old Staffordshire Derby!

There's a pattern to it really if you think about it: Liverpool/Everton Rangers/Celtic Villa/Brum Hibs/Hearts Newcastle/Sunderland Dundee Utd/Dundee
Close geographical proximity Similar size In the same Division for a long period of time And in 3-4 of the above something of a religious affiliation
We certainly don't have much of that with the Vale so while there may be a degree of mutual loathing I don't think it amounts to a genuine rivalry.

It can't be Baggies.
If we were ever to be liquidated I *think* that's who I would go and follow.

Back in the 50's and early 60's many went to Stoke and Vale home games on alternate weeks. Even then they weren't rivals as rarely played against each other.
It became more of a North/South divide depending where in the City you lived.

Do Vale still have to bring their own ball to each match to get a game. or did they get an exemption?
