How come there is no media outrage like there was for those that missed the penos in the world Cup? 👀 Because they suffered online racist abuse. And I suggest from your use of suspicious sideways eyes emoji that you know this all too well but are perhaps hinting that they are more protected because they are black? Ammaright? Yours Sincerely, Columbo, king of the cops. You are spot on mate.

I genuinely don't understand why he was getting the Ole's yesterday. Unless half of Hampden were ManUre fans. I suppose its plausible. Seems like a bandwagon that some sad fuckers have jumped on. There is nothing he has done whilst an England player that deserves that. Jeez when I think of some of the cnuts that have put that shirt on in my lifetime Maguire is a legend in comparison. It was a deliberate attempt to try to unsettle him and force a mistake. And it looks like it worked too. It's tough to know where to draw the line. I think fans should always have the right to intimidate opposition players and try to affect the outcome on the pitch, as we once did to Shaun Wright-Phillips in that famous Man City game. And the jeers were in relation to his performance level and perceived chances of him making mistake which is probably fair game. It's the social media stuff and the personal abuse that goes on after the game which is the problem.

I haven't had time to read the whole thread so apologies if this has already been said, but I think a lot of the abuse has been brought about by Maguire himself or his advisors and the career path he has chosen.
For Leicester and England he looked good because they play a deep defence with all the play in front of him and that plays to his strengths (a bit like Souttar). He then understandably chose to chase the money and fame playing for Man Utd. Was it the best move though? Perhaps under Ferguson, but at the moment Man Utd play a high line with space behind, requiring their defenders to be mobile which Maguire certainly isn't as seen on Tuesday, he can't defend the space wide and behind him from the half way line.
He had the chance to move to West Ham where I am sure Moyes would have used him deep where he would block and head away all match. Those are his strengths so he should have done well. He chose to stick out for a payment from Utd to cover the wages he would be losing up to the end of his contract. This I cannot understand. He knew he wasn't going to play for Utd, wasn't even going to be in the 25 named players, would have been getting a very good wage from West Ham, why would he sacrifice that for money he shouldn't need. I have never understood why, like Pearson allegedly, players expect their old club to continue to pay their wages when they have moved on to another club.

Utd won't pay him the millions and let him go to west ham, so he is going to sit on his arse and watch the money roll in . TBF , I am prepared to sit my arse on a bench at old Trafford for 90 mins a week, for millions, too .

What a load of waffle. Passing the buck onto Southgate? Seriously? I've heard it all now. I wonder if Darren would have the same view if it was him or another black player being racially abused. I very much doubt it. Can tell most of those commenting are armchair fans of the bigger clubs as well. So entitled that even an unfortunate own goal in a brilliant 3-1 victory is worthy of chastisement. It's part of the managers job to manage his players and if one is clearly mentally not with it then they shouldn't play. Southgate fucked up and is deflecting.

I would have thought the salary he would get at West Ham would at least cover that bonus in a year and he might have his career back on track. If he has not frittered away his salary over the past five years or so you would imagine he should have a nice little nest egg put away already. He would be earning more in a week than I would earn in a year even if I was a top earner in my profession. I am sure he would still have a very. nice life even if he gave up that bonus. If he chose to stick it out he deserves all the flack he gets for being happy to not even sit on the bench (I don't think he's in Utd's 25?). It is another example of footballers not knowing what the real world is like. If he chooses the money he also has to take the flack that comes with his decision.

TalkSport recruit mouthy idiots for clickbait, to provoke people to call in angry and keep an argument going for as long as they can etc. Too much finger pointing, and you can see that on this thread. This is poisoned journalism imo and TalkSport are not alone in this. Looking to stir conflict and contention where it doesn't need to be. There is too much conflict and aggression around nearly every news story these days, but the media outlets are provoking this on a daily basis, so much so that it is becoming a cultural norm. It's not healthy for anyone and quite damaging. Its not worth getting involved with these, it's a dead end street. Sometimes it good just to focus on putting your own house in order than telling the world what everyone else is doing is wrong.

Find me a GK that wouldn't have been furious with him. In the Dortmund game he literally explained why - because you have to hold players at that level to high standards. Sure he did it in the League too fairly recently(?) and I remember thinking 'yeah if you fuck up at that level, you need to know, you can't get away with poor performance' - It shows you're passionate and give a shit. The reality as I explained earlier in the thread, is he frequently makes really weird choices on the pitch and opposition fans goad the shit out of it. With scotland we saw him fulfil the totem he's built of himself which everyone has turned into a meme. If I were a Goalkeeper behind that I'd scream at him too: (There's plenty of other more extensive videos highlighting his errors)

Was anyone shouting in his face? If I made a mistake in work and a colleague thought the best way to handle it would be to scream at me and belittle me then I think that would just put me on edge and make me more likely to make a mistake in the future. Crazy that some people are trying to justify the abuse. You can guess which posters are straight on the social media to abuse people behind their keyboards.

The way he gets treated by journalists, fans and football pundits is appalling in my opinion. I don't think I've ever known a player to get targeted so much. Maybe I'm over exaggerating but from a footballing pov it nearly reminds you off how Caroline Flack was treated. Totally agree. His mental health must be shot. Totally, why is Southgate picking him? Southgate deserves the grief more than Maguire. Yes the player is playing poorly, hence dropped by MU but Southgate is turning fans against them both by playing him, that’s not on Maguire.

When he was arrested in Greece, he said to the police officer “Do you know who I am?” Any footballer or celebrity who utters those contemptuous words deserve a certain level of grief to bring them crashing down from their ivory towers. And sadly you believe all that stuff I think he was convicted of attempted bribery, but who knows what really happened.

The fans are not turning on Maguire, its quite the opposite as shown at the Scotland game. He got great support from the England fans. In fact, you could argue media criticism is working in his favour. It's the media kicking up storms out of teacups and folk looking for another stick to beat the England manager.

The people saying Maguire has bought it on himself are laughably wrong. The abuse being directed his way, particularly on social media is unwarranted.
I don’t agree that he should have moved to West Ham either, some will say he’s being delusional but he must be backing himself to show Ten Haag he’s worthy of his place at Man Utd and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Crazy that some people are trying to justify the abuse. You can guess which posters are straight on the social media to abuse people behind their keyboards. He'd be fair game for a bollocking, he's dodgy as well - and I reckon he'd know he'd have to accept it. If anything it's testament to the lack of the strengths that built them up in the 90's. And re: your colleague etc. That's fine really, mainly because it's a different world from the football pitch? Sat/Sunday league (even 5-a-side) you see it frequently, it's perfectly healthy most of the time, and i'd argue necessary. (Sometimes it's just petty bullshit or personal nonsense but that straightens itself out quickly.) But let's take your example: These are the 11 persons entrusted with delivering results at the head of a massive company. IF you were one of those 11, and you yourself had frequently made weird decisions/errors that put your colleagues reputations, ability to deliver results and trample on their hardwork, you *might* expect it coming your way? You might even consider putting it the way of someone else. (Equally, you might not, I don't know you and like I say it's a false comparison from the start really.) Not sure I follow the last comment in all honesty - Out of 22k stoke fans at a ground, how many of them do you think dish out 'abuse'? I'd say on any given day at least half. I'd argue every saturday everyone is at least fairly ok with abuse being given? Then they/we do it on here, or on praise and grumble etc. That's never been an issue has it? What I don't see is this groundswell of support for an non-stoke player, ever. It's really weird: Player makes frequent mistakes off the back of really weird decision-making frequently to a point where he becomes a meme, bangs in an own goal, gets criticism and then people rally together to say that 'abuse' whatever that means as compared to any given saturday is totally unacceptable. So what is it, do we all politely clap opposition players from now on? Or do we not? Or do we stick to BAU, but ringfence Maguire?

Crazy that some people are trying to justify the abuse. You can guess which posters are straight on the social media to abuse people behind their keyboards. A goalkeeper screaming and shouting at a defender for not doing their job is nothing like keyboard warriors abusing people on social media, and those last few lines of your post are pretty unfair in the way you've conflated the two things. Players going mad at each other on the pitch for screwing up in the heat of the moment has been going on since the sport started and is more prevalent with keepers because defenders screwing up often results directly in a goal (and that's always has been the case, it isn't exclusive to Onana... Pickford for one does it every single week). It's also nothing like someone after the game proactively putting together some text and sending it to a player to intentionally abuse them on a daily basis. Your job also isn't the same as theirs, so to compare how to get the best out of you in your job and how to get the best out of a professional athlete is utterly pointless and means nothing. I, like most others, totally disagree with the prolonged and daily abuse of Maguire but to say that anyone who can see what Onana has done here is exactly the same as keepers do and have done up and down the country every weekend since the sport began, is somehow now an apologist for the abuse he gets on social media is pretty damn poor on your part to be honest.
