If its not a stupid question why don't Sunderland want him?
Quick answer please, I expect this thread will shortly vanish like it's predecessors.

If its not a stupid question why don't Sunderland want him? They've been in talks over a new deal for months, it seems they've reached an impasse currently.

If its not a stupid question why don't Sunderland want him? They do. They just can't agree a new deal as he enters his final 12 months, as their regime don't dish out big money contracts. And the Achilles issues have probably made them even more cautious.

He's out of contract in a year, he might fancy a change. I dunno.

Well I suppose we managed to poach Sunderland's manager. Jury is out on how that one went!

Move a Gayle on and you've got £20k per week to play with.

This guy has had a good season and a half in his career, and the full season he did have was in League 1. On top of that he’s had a nasty injury and hasn’t proved he’s still what he was (and that may well have been a flash in the pan). If we spend money on him we want our heads looking at

If we spend money on him we want our heads looking at Injury aside, we aren't going to be getting anyone overly proven in this league for goal scoring without spending stupid money, look at Simms, one okay season (fewer goals and assists) there's talk of 8mil + for him with add ons etc. It might be the kind of risk we need/have to take.

Given the fullbacks we seem to be looking to get in it would be pretty easy to go with wingbacks, not that we'd need to anyway.

If its not a stupid question why don't Sunderland want him? Quick answer please, I expect this thread will shortly vanish like it's predecessors. We do, it’s just a stand off between ourselves and the player/agent. From what I understand, we offered him a big contract when we got promoted - around £15k a week with bonuses, but he wanted to see if a better offer would come in for him (as he effectively had two years left at the time with the one-year extension). He then got his second long-term injury and wanted to sign the deal on our original terms offered, but we didn’t feel comfortable offering that when there’s no guarantee he’ll come back as the same player. He and his agent took a chance not accepting the original offer, and if he doesn’t come back fully fit - then they’ve blown it because no one would offer him more than £15k a week on the basis of a good 15 months or so. FWIW, he can leave imo. Sick of the whole saga now and he’d likely just increase his demands again if he starts banging them in when he returns. Shame as he’s a good player but there’s obviously a huge stand off and neither side will give in.

There are 48 teams below us in the football pyramid.
Surely there must be a forward amongst them who fits what we need and is capable of making the step up to the Championship?
We don't even need to fish in that pool exclusively anymore, we've got the whole of Europe to get at.

We don't even need to fish in that pool exclusively anymore, we've got the whole of Europe to get at. This is the concern for me. It’s a big world, with plenty of strikers who are more than capable of playing in the championship. The new work permit rules have opened up a whole new market. Surely we aren’t pinning all our hopes on someone who’s had a serious injury and still isn’t for yet.
