The fact that you can guarantee 5 loanees will be in the starting line up each week shows you what kind of a state we were in prior to the window closing. In truth the other two would start as well if allowed. That tells you everything you need to know doesn’t it??

I said at the time it was a massive gamble - we left the squad paper thin and if we had a couple of injuries we would be in the shit. As it is the players brought in have done well, we've just about got away with the injuries, the team has gelled and we look pretty much safe so it looks like the gamble has paid off.
However it terms of improving our prospects next year the Xmas window has contributed the square root of fuck all - other than banking the funds we have for a window more conducive to actually building a squad.
All the talk about signing any of the loanees is pure wishful thinking. If we are lucky we might get one, two would be freakishly lucky.
This team is looking decent but it's going to be dismantled in May when we will have a squad of 7 senior first team players. Basically we will be starting again. The good thing is that Neil has shown he can put together a decent team and he's got the funds to make use of the transfer market. Thing is it's going to take time for the new first team to gel - and it isn't going to be anything like the one we are watching at the moment in terms of personnel.
So it was a gamble that looks like it's come off so in those terms it has been a success. In terms of our future prospects it's made very little difference - its just deferred the serious business until the summer.

No reason Neil can't keep the buzz going - he's just going to have to do it with a different set of players. The only ones I can see being first team regulars next season are Campbell, Laurent and possibly Brown and if we get lucky Sterling.

I think we'll sign three of the loans I can't even remember the last loanee we secured in the summer and I can't recall ever getting more than one so on what basis do you think we will get 3? Pearson, Sterling and I've just got a little tingly feeling in my penis about Tuanzebe. If we need to prioritize 1 signing, it's Pearson. If we have 20 million, spend half on Pearson, give Bournemouth what they want, because he brings order and balance and makes everyone better. Pearson knows this manager and knows he is exactly the kind of player stoke fans love.

I can't even recall who the last loanee was that we would have wanted to keep. I'd want to keep Pearson and Sterling who seem attainable Hoever and Sarkic on another season long loan. I'd like to see Powell play in place of Smallbone a few times before the end of the season, as well as he has played recently I still think Nick is better at everything than Smallbone other than staying fit.

In one of his interviews around the time of the transfer window Alex Neil said something like 'some of the decisions I make might appear strange at the time but people need to trust me'.
Well the signings of Tuanzebe and Pearson seemed strange with both being injured on arrival but ultimately they've helped guide us to safety.
Maybe this and the sale of Souttar was what he was referring to.
He definitely seems to have an eye for a player as the signing of Hoever shows. Most of us were sceptical about him yet he has proved a revelation.
I am really excited for the summer window and I get the feeling that quite a bit of the ground work may have already been done.
I think we might get a couple of exciting signings in early doors to boost season ticket sales.

And the rain keeps falling on the muddy sides of the hole making it extremely slippery. You concentrate on one mistake that could have been costly and ignore the balance of good over bad.

The context of the window was that we needed signings to avoid getting dragged into a relegation battle. We’ve not only done that but we finally have some balance and momentum.
Yes it hasn’t solved any of the rebuilding issues in the summer but I don’t think it was ever going to. The January window is generally about a short term fix to get you over the line for whatever you’re aiming for, and in that context it’s gone about as well as it could have, really.

Wilmot will certainly play too! Quite a few have dug themselves a hole on that one, they'll be a while climbing out of it. Why? I really wasn't impressed by Wilmot when we played 3 at the back as I thought he made too many crucial mistakes. After we started playing 4 at the back he has been a transformed player and been one of the better performers. Against Brough he again started doing some crucial mistakes that could have cost ud the game, but for the last 75 minutes he was again outstanding in my opinion. I'l give him so slack after being injured so I won't put too much emphsis on his first 15 minutes this time, and I really think he has improved his play a lot the last 6-7 games.

He has improved in the last few games but there is still a game changing howler in him. If he gets rid of that from his game then he deserves a place in the side because he's decent but if we are serious about promotion the central defenders have to rock solid and at the moment Wilmot simply isn't reliable enough.

Replacing Souttar with Tuanzebe is a gamble and very very nearly but us on the arse, we were down to Fox at CB, if he had picked up an injury we would have been in big trouble.
Sarkic is a good addition hopefully we can loan or sign him or Iverson in the summer.
Hoever has been a very welcome surprise, was abit sceptical with reports of attitude problems and poor training discipline but I think it’s testament to what AN has done that he seems to be knuckling down and is probably the most in form RB in the league.
Pearson. Nothing needs to be said, he has completely changed the team. Needs to be our first signing in the summer. He is the perfect player for what we need and him and stoke seem a match made in heaven.
Celina not really seen enough to say but an ok option.

Sterling maybe given he is out of contract. If Bournemouth stay up they might want to offload Pearson but if they come down why the hell would they want to sell the ideal Championship player when they have more expensive assets to offload? Sarkic's injury record is a concern and we simply have to have a permenant first choice goal keeper - teams tend to loan backup keepers, not first choice. However sees himself as a top player - he'll either want to prove himself at Wolves or go to a higher profile club, possibly in Europe. Smallbone is going to have the sort of career Powell will never have - way better player. Powell will be gone at the end of the season - I wouldn't even be surprised to see him retire - with his injury record his options are going to be limited to clubs willing to take a punt. Other than a wave good bye there's no point playing him - he's not part of the future.

He was better than the other CB’s then too (3 at the back) yes he made some costly mistakes but he made them trying to play a far greater role in the play of the team than whichever other two CB’s he was played with. Anyone who thought he was doing something the manager didn’t want him doing yet still kept picking him is bonkers. Why were the other CB’s not asked to play such an extensive game? Simply because they haven’t got it in them. Just like the debate about Hoever you have to balance risk vs reward, simply trying to eliminate risk is not productive.
