It’s nice that he remembers his roots but I’d be more excited if he answered instantly. He seemed to have a good think, maybe got nervous about saying some of the giant clubs for various reasons, then remembered he’d been saving his stoke city get out of jail free card and cooly played it. Very nice media sorcery to be fair. It’s the guaranteed least controversial answer.
I did have a dream a few months back though that we signed him, and I also had a few nightmares around the time we were really good in the prem, about being back in the championship and struggling. And then I woke up and had the same feelings of relief as when you have truly horrific nightmares and realise it was just a dream. So if we sign him then burn me as a witch.

We released him, didn't believe in him etc. Contract off from Villareal, La Liga, sunny, big club. Yeah go get him Stoke That's pretty much what he said wasn't it? As someone else has said, seemed to me to be a case of not wanting to say a team that he’s been linked with - a whole host of Premier League and La Liga clubs - and has, instead, said the team he supports. Because, y’know, it wouldn’t create any shite rumours. Hence why the interview was released about 3 weeks ago and we’re only just now seeing it on this mb. File it under absolutely no chance imo. *If he does, of course, fancy playing for Stoke then go and get him, Alex

He’ll go to Spain, it will break down within 18 months and then thsts our chance. Harsh and cruel and absolutely spot on! It would be typical of us to wait till he is 32 and has lost a leg to gangrene before we signed him

This goes to show why we need a very strong end of the season. Potential players have to believe we are going to be promoted next season.
Only then would we stand a glimmer of a chance of signing players like this.

He is exactly why Blackburn are where they are in the league. End of, sign him and we would piss this .

Not to say it’s impossible we could sign him but you’d be very silly to read anything into that interview. He’s just answering a daft hypothetical with an off-the-cuff remark, he’d just been talking two minutes earlier about how his family are Stoke fans so the idea was fresh in his mind.. I don’t think it remotely means he’s dying to sign for Stoke right now.

Was chatting to a guy by me on Fri evening and we said it must be a real strange experience to be playing against your boyhood club, especially on the ground you used to sit and watch them on. & then scoring against them must be another level of strange.
Can see why people have mentioned Delap on this thread but Liam could quite as easily be a Derby fan as he is a Stoke as he was from that way on and his dad played and worked for them aswell, & it was where Liam started out in his footballing career.
Brereton was watching Stoke from a early age with his family before he even embarked on his footy career so their is definitely a different kind of allegiance with Stoke for Ben than there would be Liam.
Not saying it would necessarily make him more inclined to join Stoke if the opportunity ever arose but it may well be a factor. Perhaps the fact he's a Stoke fan but got shipped out of SCFC from an early age may cause a degree of resentment aswell?
I always thought as a Stoke fan growing up it would be awesome to play for your boyhood supporting club, but probably not manage them as that has the potential to end badly even if do OK... ie Chris Wilding at Sheff Utd..
Who knows re Brereton, wishful thinking but if we could tempt either him or Ross Stewart here in the Summer who I believe is also a free agent, then that would certainly show our credentials in the transfer market & increase our aspirations for mounting a credible promotion bid.

How he was about to say I love Stoke then stopped himself and said I support Stoke. He definitely loves us which doesn't mean well sign him obviously but he'd seriously think about it if we went on for him.

Surly me could match 30k pw! He would be a perfect fit for us! JC needs to see his interview! 😂 And then what do we do with the rest of the squad? We don’t make money. Bring in players on high wages and watch us get eaten up by FFP.

Even if he doesn’t go to a Spanish club as has been rumoured I’d imagine there will still be a clamour for him as a free agent and that parachute clubs would be ahead of us in queue.
He’s exactly the type of forward we should be trying to sign if we want to be serious about promotion but as things stand I think he’s well out of our potential reach.

I don’t think he’d seriously consider us, his sights are probably set on the Prem asap. Also the little laugh at the end seemed to me to suggest that it wasn’t realistic option currently

I’d agree with them but I think he’ll go abroad. His brand in Chile is massive and will have pull in Spain too I would have thought with his performances for Chile. Family situations often dictate. To a certain extent, but surely not when you have an opportunity to be earning £30k p/week rather than the £20k p/week (at a considerable stretch!) that we could possibly offer him (and that's without the signing on fee). As already said, they could move the in-laws with them to Spain who I'm sure would jump at some time in the sun while looking after the grandkids. Ben's too good for this league, whether he loves us or not. The only reason he's at Blackburn now is because they triggered an option to extend.

I don't know if it's been pointed out, but Villa Real are not a massive Spanish club. Their average home attendance is around 16,300.

he would be a great signing just what we need and he is out of contract,he is a stoke fan so that must go in our favour, these are the type of players what will sell season tickets,i think we will have a good go of it next season i have no doubt that Alex Neil is the right man to get us up,if we can get Ben Pearson in and and Smallbone, with some of the soutter money we should still have money left over,i think Stirling and Tuanzebe are both out of contract so we might be in for them, things might be heading in the right direction, Footballers aren’t like supporters, they don’t all clamour to play for their boyhood team. He literally said in the interview that he did 🤷🏼♂️

Players rarely declare their true intentions in public, the impression I got was that he was being diplomatic, knowing there will be plenty of tempting offers in the summer and not wanting to show his hand.

You never know. Many people treasure their unfulfilled childhood dreams. If the terms were right and he was convinced that there was a realistic chance of leading Stoke to the Premier League, maybe he would be tempted.

And two years instead of the 1 year Rovers are offering then you can factor in the emotional pull All hypothetical by the way
