I remember we were linked to Nicklas Bendtner on the same day that we signed Crouch, and I remember I was hoping it was him we'd sign.

Gerry McMahon from Spurs in 1996, I had high hopes for him aswell but he never really pushed on. Although it's interesting to note & easy to forget that McMahon scored our penultimate league goal at the Victoria Ground before Kavanagh scored Stokes final goal in that WBA match. Think we signed McMahon and Kav on virtually the same day. Remember being considerably more impressed with Kav than I was McMahon For his faults and he had a fair few knockers from the stands I did like Kav & think he gave us good service. Just hated the way he left for our fiercest rivals at a time we were starting to look good.

So Bayerns contribution to this thread was to reluctantly name a player he was wrong about and then go to great lengths to explain why he was actually right 😂 I don’t think I’m right though? His goals speak for themself. He’s clearly not shit. As stubborn as a Mule

John Tudor: I thought we had signed a goal machine as he had scored for fun at Newcastle. Paul Randall: Impressive for Bristol Rovers and I had high hopes for him, but he was disappointing at Stoke. Dave Watson. I thought he was passed it. I was wrong. Dean Crowe: A very promising player who faded away for some reason. I think he was labelled in one newspaper as "The Michael Owen of League One". Nope.

Pericard (He played for Juve you know), Palacious, John Carew, Wilfred Bony. Players I thought would really make a big difference. Years Team Apps (Gls) 1999–2000 Saint-Étienne 2 (0) 2000–2002 Juventus 0 (0) 2002–2003 → Portsmouth (loan) 32 (9) 2003–2006 Portsmouth 12 (0) 2005 → Sheffield United (loan) 11 (2) 2006 → Plymouth Argyle (loan) 15 (4) 2006–2009 Stoke City 38 (2) 2008 → Southampton (loan) 5 (0) 2009 → Millwall (loan) 2 (0) 2009–2010 Carlisle United 10 (4) 2010–2011 Swindon Town 32 (2) 2011–2012 Havant & Waterlooville 5 (0) 2015 Moneyfields 1 (0) Total 165 (23) Vincent Péricard's stats... i would expect to see more career goals from a CB. How did he keep finding clubs to sign him!? That's cant be true can it? He scored more than 2 for us.

Always liked him but thought he'd turn out proper shit. He's improved a lot. Josh Tymon and Jon Walters turned out on the good end. Goodfellow and Imbula on the bad end. Both of them had some cracking early games.

I was so happy to glout when he scored.

For stoke in recent times: Imbula - Initially he looked an absolute monster. Clearly had ability but seems he also had a bad attitude and was almost certainly thick as fuck and not able to follow simple instructions
Etebo - Couldn’t believe we signed him after watching him rip it up at the World Cup. I’m sure I remember his name featured on a leaderboard of players with the most successful dribbles…. Another name on the list was Messi from memory. Again, bad attitude
Shay Given - Even though he was getting on a bit I expected him to be a bit like Sorro. Still show a shade of class and experience and a bit of leadership. We would have been better off sticking a fucking traffic cone in the centre of the goal. So far past it and not interested when he played for us.
Arnautovic - Couldn’t warm to him at first and also appeared to have a bad attitude, throwing his arms up at misplaced passes etc. Thought he was going to be a disaster based on his previous clubs reputation of being a ‘bad boy’. Turned out to be absolutely mustard and one of my favourite ever stoke players of the Prem era. Probably tied with N’Zonzi
Outside of Stoke: Anderson - saw him in one of his early games for Utd against Liverpool. He absolutely bossed Gerrard all game and absolutely dominated. Looked to be world class but just all went wrong for him. Was apparently addicted to McDonald’s 😂
Dele Alli - was convinced he was going to be the future of English football and a team would eventually be built around him. Fame, pressure and money seemed to have ruined him. Shame.

Greenacre. I remember caravaning with my Grandad and hearing the news. I was really excited that we’d finally get someone who could regularly put the ball in the net. He got injured in a friendly at Newcastle (Town) pre season that basically put paid to it

John Tudor - especially after his brace against Ipswich.
Ian Allinson - couldn't believe we'd signed what I thought was a great top flight striker. Wrong.
Tony Ellis - lived in Lancashire and the local paper was raving about him so thought we'd really captured a hot shot. Ah well.
Gerry McMahon - guess I'm not a very good judge of a player.

Richard Cresswell when he signed, I truly believed we had taken a step forward and he was going to be a legend, I went out had bought a new shirt with his name on. i think i saw him play once, before he joined stoke and that he was next level...looking at his record at all his clubs now, i have no idea why i thought that... Never had a player name on a shirt since Never a left winger in a million years and a laughably bad one compared to Matty etherington. Yet he did a great job for us on the left and down the middle and got us promoted. The prem was a step too far ,but he was great for us in the championship

The little winger.
Well, Ric thought he was good anyway. Took everyone else x5 minutes to realise.

I remember thinking we had bought a geriatric carthorse whose best place was pasture in Basford, rather than the middle of a First Division back 4 when Dave Watson arrived from Southampton. He went on to be one of the best centre halves I've ever seen play for Stoke.
You'd think I'd learn, but my thoughts were similar when Gerry Taggart arrived. Finally I decided to give Jags a chance before passing opinion, and things are looking optimistic.
Dave Watson although his legs had gone a bit was the best header of the ball I think I’ve ever seen.Absolutely won every header.

Yeah strange with Kav,as when we were poor in that period he kept going and didn't throw in the towel, then he packed in once we started to look better as you rightly said.
