We won’t make it. I’ve seen nothing this season to suggest that we’ll now go on a run of form equivalent to a top 2 side, and that’s what we need. As my stock broker is constantly telling me ..... Past performance is not a guarantee that it will continue into the future. If everyone were to adopt your philosophy (we've done nothing therefore we won't do anything) then Leicester would have been relegated and would not have won the Prem the next season. 2 points a game is good form, but not impossible!

Looking back at the points for the 6th placed team over the previous 3 seasons, it ranges from 70pts (lowest) to 77pts (highest), with 74pts being enough 3 years ago. The current 6th place team (Boro) are on 45pts from 28 games. Pro-rata that out for the remainder of the season and it gives a final tally of 74 points (the same number of the 6th place team in the 2018/19 season). We're currently on 39 points from 28 games (an average of 1.39pts per game). In order to get to 74 points come the end of the season, we need 35 points from the remaining 18 games (pretty much bang on 2pts per game). That's the same kind of return that Fulham are currently on, sitting top with 58pts from 28 games. Most agree that Fulham have been head and shoulders above every other team in the league so far, so that gives an indication of what's required to get that kind of return. Even with all the changes, new signings and optimism thrown up from the January window, I can't for the life of me see that kind of transformation over the latter part of the season. We'll probably need 10 wins and 5 draws from the last 18 games. That's a very big ask. If we could predict football we'd all win the pools. Lots of games to play yet.Isnot impossible until its impossible.

Well considering we still have no playmaking midfielders, we still play a back 3 with guys who are not really wing back types and we have not played well since before the holidays, I'm going with no chance of playoffs. I really am a glass half full type, but absolutely nothing points to us being able to pick up the points needed. Now it is not "impossible", it is improbable. I think the idea is that Baker is the playmaking midfielder? He certainly looks to have some impetus and can spray the ball around a bit? Could be and I hope so, but he'd be about the only one. Been crying out for one basically since Nzonzi left, but I admit it's much easier to say than to find a good one.

It would have to be a turnaround of amazing proportions for us to make the top 6. I'm the eternal optimist but I can't see us doing it. Of the teams above us, Sheff United have two games in hand over us and Coventry have one. We have a game in hand on four teams above us. We have potential six-pointers against 9 teams above us - 5 away and 4 at home. It just ain't gonna happen. From where we are now, a top 10 finish will be decent progress. OS. The voice of reason

If Tyrese can recover full fitness the one hope that we have is that we finally look like we've got goals in the team. Maja is a goal every other game man, Tyrese can score goals when at full fitness and Powell is good for a number of goals as well. Throw in Baker, who can clearly shoot from distance and you have to hope and Bidace who looks like he wants to get at his man 1v1 at every opportunity, at long last, we've look to have the firepower to score more than 1 goal per game.
That could be the difference. We've had no run of form for 5 years but now we need the 8 wins in 10 games type run that can propel us into contention. All is not lost but it soon will be if we don't start turning tight games into wins rather than draws and defeats.

Some believe there's a playmaker hidden in Thompson, who's also back. If you know which system we are playing after the window you're probably the only one. A lot say a 4-man defence, others go with 3, as you reject, and I believe we will play with at least five central defenders splattered all over the pitch. If you think that any of Powell, Vrancic or Sawyers are true midfielders I guess we have some(and I don't rate Sawyers). They are much more types who sit in close behind a striker. I mean an actual ball playing midfielder who can pick the ball up in midfield and pass or carry it forward. Sawyers is definitely not one, Powell and Vrancic while good on the ball aren't on the ball much until we are already in the opposition half or even third. We have no one who can truly control a midfield and make that transition from defense to attack on any consistent basis. Powell or Vrancic may be able to do this a bit but they are not really positioned there. Sure no one knows what system we will play game to game, but considering 90% of the season so far has been with 3 at the back I can only assume that is the system that has been drilled at practice and will continue. A lot of people said 4 man defense at the start of the season too and we see how that has played out.

But to make the playoffs, we haven’t just got to be good, we’ve got to be consistently excellent (top 2 form). We’ve been erratic for several years, I don’t see any reason why that’s going to change to us suddenly being excellent over the next 18 games. I’m an optimist by the way!

Whether you rate him is up to you, but you can't deny that there's goals in him. It's easy to be optimistic and overjoyed when a new striker comes in and looks hot, Sima and Surridge were both expected to go goal mad, but look what happened. To suggest Maja will score every other game is maybe a little big ask for someone who has only ever scored one goal in pro football. Granted, he hasn't played much, but I wouldn't big him up just yet.

A lot of people said 4 man defense at the start of the season too and we see how that has played out. You'll probably have to re-activate Hudson if that's the type you're looking for. But games, I'm afraid, will probably stop after 90 seconds... The 3-4-3 system doesn't really feature the old fashioned playmaker. The 3-5-2 might, if the 10 doesn't sit too high, like you're suggesting Powell should. The reason he's often been positioned there was because he was a goal threat, and no one else was. I think Powell should sit a little deeper, not much, but still ahead of the other four, His long range passsing is maybe not up to the standards of what you're looking for, but he can still spread the ball around and make the game happen.

Of course they're not out of reach.6 points behind with 18 games to play would take one small run of form to make up. Wonder how many would say there's no chance of us going down if we were 6 points above the relegation zone.

It’s unlikely…..
…..but…..
…..if we do make the play offs….
….then we’ll obviously have been in good form finishing the season….
….so….
…..you’d have to think that we’d have a chance, being the form team…
….like I said….unlikely…..

O’Neill has made some good loan signings going forward and we’ll certainly score goals, the key is keeping Powell on the pitch. Unfortunately we still have a woeful defence and we’ll concede way too many to collect at least ten wins. I’ve said before the injuries and I’ll say it again, O’Neill have vastly overachieved and doesn’t have the ability to take up up never mind the playoffs!!!

This January has been such a muddle.
Christmas is the crucible in which promotion seasons are forged. In our last promotion year, we had an excellent December. This year, we've been poor for various reasons.
The manager himself says the playoffs have gone.
Yet we seem to have had the transfer window of a team really rolling the dice rather than rolling into mediocrity. There are exciting loans and deals with a short term focus. What's the point if it's out of reach?

We don't have a balanced midfield yet, we don't have good enough full backs, or center backs.
We have a bunch of promising looking attacking players now but we've never seen an attacking strategy under O'Neill.
Play offs is a minimum this season, anything else is a failure by the manager. The quality of the league has been awful this season

We got rid of probably the only defender who can defend, limited footballer I know, replaced him with a 40-year-old, got rid of the only keeper that has shown any consistency over the last few years, we have a manager who was probably forced to play Ince solely to put him in the shop window, the fact he was playing well and chipping in with a few goals was irrelevant, it was just an exercise to showcase.
This is not a club with any ambition of promotion this season, just hell-bent on thinning the squad and getting the wage bill down while trying to stay up - that said still a bizarre window even by our standards.
MON will be getting a big bonus if he gets us to 50pts while the club is in a huge transition. The talk of play-offs is a bit laughable, but we do have a large percentage of very optimistic fans - the same that will be predicting a top 2 finish next season - even if we lose more quality players pre-season and replace them with a bunch of 50-year-olds
6 wins, 6 draws, 6 defeats will probably get us a top-half finish and not beyond the realms, but can't see it myself. If it does happen though MON will have done well, considering the injuries, the major thinning of the squad and little money to bring any quality in

I thought we were gone. That is until DWP, Philo and Baker popped up and suddenly we looked a different team. Huddersfield were lucky. Thompson is back, Powell is showing form and Moore and Maja gives us two new options. We can win a dozen games or more. Go batter your bookmaker.
