I found myself down at Vale Park a couple of weeks ago (due to work purposes) and wandered along to the Fan Zone to see what it was like. To be fair, there were a couple of hundred fans using it (mostly those with children). They had music, food, drink and an inflatable goal thing for a shooting challenge. There were staff going around handing out free goodie bags, stickers, and signed photos to the children. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it was genuinely a lovely, family-friendly atmosphere. It wasn't anything overly grand or complex, but I bet it must make one hell of a positive impression on the match day experience for the children. The mad thing is, I doubt that it takes much organising either. Just a little willing.

Not on the topic of Fanzones as such, but would just like to comment that I attended my first game ever in the JSU on Friday and my word, it is a different world from every other area of the ground. Carpet in the concourse, no queues whatsoever for a beer or for food before the game or at half time, no one smoking in the concourse or in the toilets. Really enjoyable experience Don't usually allow riff raff in the exclusive zones .😉 I take it you have to sit in the boothen end then

Its half-arsed and makes people miserable, putting even more pressure on the players and manager when they lose.
It's 2022, it's no longer enough to do the bare minimum.

They are generally well received and generally work.

We couldnt afford the heating to have a fan zone. Imagine the middle of winter on the hill, having an extortionate pint in a blizzard. 🥶🥶🥶
Biggest mistake we made was moving home to an abandoned hill with no amenities.

Unfortunately we can’t change that, what we can do is improve the areas around the ground and the general experience for fans, even West Ham have done it and their ground is the worst I’ve been to, but speaking to their fans they’ve made improvements to their matchday experience in the last 18 months or so that have softened the blow of losing the Boleyn, obviously helped by on pitch matters as well

I'm hearing about these things that Vale are doing better than us off the pitch. Not disputing anything but it'd nice to see some examples.

Better fan engagement for one, fanzones etc. they’ve also appointed a director of football (David flitcroft) who’s helped rebuild them behind the scenes and improve their scouting/recruitment

I'm hearing about these things that Vale are doing better than us off the pitch. Not disputing anything but it'd nice to see some examples. There is an example further up but it’s not about Vale. There is a huge opportunity for the club to create a fan friendly atmosphere outside the ground particularly for those who’ve travelled a distance or with kids. It’s a desolate place outside the ground. Get some food and drink stalls up, some interactive kids stuff, a dj or band. Make it into an enjoyable day out for people. It’s lazy and indicative of the last few years. We are behind in everything we do.

Not sure what this fuss re so called fan zones is all of a sudden. I think that's the point though. They are fourth-tier but have put the effort in to get a fan zone set up. Like I said, it was used by a minority of fans (a couple of hundred out of 6,000 on the day) yet the kids that were there would have a far superior matchday experience than what we currently offer (I'm not sure what we offer in our family stand/zone, so I stand to be corrected course).

Not sure what this fuss re so called fan zones is all of a sudden. Its about actually giving a fucking about the matchday experience after two years without one. It's about getting fans to your ground early and keeping them after. It's about listening to what your fans want and need, and connecting with them. It's about making money . We are clueless off the pitch when it comes to matchday.

I don’t think if it’s pissing down with rain or freezing cold many will be rushing down early with young kids to a fanzone before a match v a Luton Town or Reading etc etc leaving bars empty and the entertainment twiddling their thumbs…..they’ll need paying though
It’ll be a fad that will soon lose its appeal given the reasons I’ve stated
IMO of course

It was packed. It’s not a fad, people go to the ground early for this stuff no matter the weather. In any case, get some shelters up, crikey it really isn’t difficult

Makes it easier for us to avoid as many stoke fans as possible pre match

I visited Newcastle upon Tyne not too long ago and went to a place called stack. It’s just loads of shipping containers converted into bars and food stalls with a courtyard with benches and outdoor heaters in the middle, it even has a retractable roof. music was playing the atmosphere there was class.. could easily do something like that behind the Boothen

Went to Mickleover v Buxton yesterday and they had a fan zone. Beer festival in a marquee with about ten different beers plus Lillys ciders, Derby County memorabilia display before the match and an excellent curry stall. Sunshine helped but what an amazingly friendly family atmosphere it created. I have to say it was a far more enjoyable matchday experience than any game I've been to anywhere but Wembley and made you feel the club wanted you to enjoy your visit. Good game as well with Mickleover taking the lead twice but finally earning a 3-3 draw with a last minute equaliser.

I dont think anybodys saying that the club doesn’t do anything right? We’re just pointing out areas we can improve There are some Stoke fans that say exactly this, though. “We’re fucking useless off the pitch, there are non league clubs light years ahead of us” - because they’ve got a gazebo and some craft ale on a car park.

These things are great on a lovely warm sunny day and many of you urging the club to have one of these I’ll dare bet the first sign of rain etc you won’t go anywhere near it
One defeat sees many saying fuck it and that’s just the match itself let alone standing in the pissing down rain or in -10 temperatures upside with the wind howling through

Indeed there are because it’s true. The season tickets and coaches are great but it fits with the narrative it’s easy and lazy. Anything that takes a bit of thought or effort doesn’t get done.
