I really don't get the Thompson is hopeless thing, I think he's been steady and certainly solid alongside Mikel on the whole.. He tries his hardest and he can have the occasional good game but he's nowhere near good enough to be a regular championship starter for anyone.

If he can become consistent, then I’m not fussed about him being in the team. At present he isn’t bad in possession, he’s combative when not, but it’s very much meh. 6 of 10’s every week. If he can be more consistent with his set pieces, then at least he would make us a threat again.

Like to see Thompson make runs I to the box to get ahead of the forwards His goal v Spurs he could be getting half a dozen like that not just the once

We have a number of players like Thompson who are okay at much of his game, but that don’t actually excel. They need personal training in one or two traits they are good at so they can tip the balance. I still think that’s the case with Brown. If he put on some muscle mass over the summer and came back more aggressive, he’d be a lot more effective given his work rate.

Brown certainly showing glimpses as was Thompson

Wouldn't surprise me if he followed Ng there as Ng has been a massive hit so far. We should be pulling out all the stops to get him here.

I hope we are genuinely in for this lad, he's the exact type of player we need and he's from the effing city!

from Arnie, N'Zonzi and Shaqiri to Crewe and Rotherham cast offs, this makes me so sad to see just how far we've plummeted in such a short time. Gouranga.

I'd be surprised if we made any permanent signings this summer.
I thought loans were the order of the day?

A loan player isn't so different in cost than signing an out of contract player. Instead of a loan fee we would end up paying a signing on fee - which for a League 1 player would be modest.

Lets not forget in the first half of our prem league tenure we had some fairly average midfielders such as Amdy Faye, Kightly and even Dean Whitehead Re: Forsyth, him Kav and Keeno were the few bright spots in the late 90s

Took him a while to settle but turned into a great player. His unpredictability made him the player he is/was. Shopping in big ponds guarantees nothing

A loan is generally only a 12 month commitment, whereas a freebie or any permanent signing at this level will be around 3 years minimum. Given FFP this year and the loosening next year, I'd be surprised if we committed to any longer term transfer this summer.

I suspect most of our loans will be from Prem clubs and our purchases will be from League 1 with our free transfers from Championship and League 1. I am assuming that, one way or another, a few of the dead wood players WILL be off the books this summer.

I see a few young uns on loan like Matondo, Clarke and RND with one or two old uns on 12 month deals with options, like Fletcher, Mikel and Chester. Maybe if we can shift enough out we might sneak the odd deal in like Doughty and Thompson.
