Perhaps not the best choice of location to try a 475 point turn.

She weighs in at 219,000t and could be carrying up to 20,000TEUs. If the momentum has caused her to dig into the banks I can see this being an absolute nightmare to shift.

The Egyptian economy relies massively on the canal although don’t think they own it. Remember going north on HMS Bulldog and being delayed because she had controls system failure. The Egyptian authorities would not allow her to proceed until their own engineer had visited the ship and witnessed for himself the ship was safe to proceed. This procedure cost 1000s he was only onboard an hour at the most.

Know my luck my lady’s birthday present is probably on that thing! Our local little golf course were planning a frisbee golf course starting in the spring but have had to delay until summer as the freighter delivering the gear (from China) sank en route.

A fully laden ,underway, ship like that would take some steering.
Slightly off course for a few seconds it would be a struggle to rectify it, plus the windage. The reports say there were 30 Kn gusts which are quite strong but an experienced mariner would be able to cope with conditions like that as routine.
Some years ago a oil tanker grounded at the entrance to Milford Haven. The inquiry found that the Pilot ( required by regs ) was at the time in the Skippers cabin drinking Scotch !
The canal is nicknamed the Marlborough Canal as the Pilots often require, and expect, a carton of cigarettes on boarding. I hope he was on the bridge and not below collecting his backhander ?🤪⚓️

Just listened to the first few minute of Jeremy Vine on R2. Must qualify as the thickest presenter ever. Clearly does not do any research whatsoever on his programme subjects. Even a quick glance at a map of the Suez and its website would have prevented him making a complete arse of himself with his questions.

Quite right Lawrie, Vine is the same on quite a lot of subjects on his programme, political or otherwise - a lot of the time he's either incorrect and/or very biased. I think his actual presentation style is bloody awful as well. I just listened to his piece on the Suez incident - woeful.

I hope he was on the bridge and not below collecting his backhander ?🤪⚓️ Saw it! A single hulled tanker, the Sea Empress. On the 15 February 1996 the vessel was entering the mouth of the Cleddau Estuary on her way into Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire to discharge its oil cargo at the Texaco oil refinery. Sailing against the outgoing tide, the ship was pushed off its course by the current and hit rocks in the middle of the channel, which punctured her starboard hull causing oil to pour out into the bay. Six days later, the tanker re-floated and was towed into the harbour. In the days between its grounding and towing, the oil tanker spilled 72,000 tons of crude oil along the Pembrokeshire Coastline, within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, which is probably the third largest maritime oil spillage in British Waters. Simple errors sometimes have considerable consequences for oceon going ships.

The thing is, the next time there's a major delay or shortage of something important like facemasks or PPE, the Govt excuse or response is likely to be "Suez Incident."

Daft as it seems that is not far from the truth, not necessarily this ship but the dozens or so held up, my company get about 3 containers a week from Taiwan, we have already been alerted that 2 of our ships are held up, and could interupt our supply chain to our customers.
