What a powerful, sad program that was.
Paul Stewart and his mum are truly haunted. Hard to watch.
Explains a little about Paul Stewart's time with us and an experience I had with him. He wouldn't or was extremely reluctant to have his photo taken with kids and in being so reluctant he appeared ridiculously arrogant.

I couldn't stand Stewart when he was with us, and I feel guilty now I know what demons the poor bloke was carrying around with him throughout his career. Really powerful stuff, I'm just watching Episode 2 on Iplayer now.......

Incredible really. Striking how nonchalantly those at Crewe treated it, even in the recent interviews. Also how open the rumours were with no meaningful investigation at the time, even when concerns were raised.

Harrowing viewing. I was disturbed and disgusted in equal measure watching it. The victims of these predators are clearly still tortured by it all to this day.

I really disliked Stewart when he was here. I make no bones about my ignorance as to what he was going through at the time. To say that program was a lesson is a massive understatement.
That was the toughest hours of TV I've ever watched but sadly nothing like they went through.
I'm so sorry Paul. I didn't know.

Read about this. But wouldn’t be able to bring myself to watch a minute of.
Absolutely sickening. These perverts and any other beasts like these should hang

Don't think I've ever watched a program in stone cold silence like that one. I cant imagine what andy woodward must have felt when bennell married his sister. That must have been like inviting satan into your family.
And what the parents of all those players must think now, knowing what has happened, will haunt them forever.

It's just horrific.
Just to watch it is horrific, just cant imagine the pain and torment these young lads have gone through, throughout their whole lives and their families.
It's sickening, and to think if Andy Woodward hadn't have mustered up the courage, so many of these guys would be taking this to their graves. Unbelievable courage.
and yes...that Crewe Director...his response was awful.

Was at lad at Rangers who was being abused and told his family who reported it to the club. They club informed the family that the police were informed when in fact they weren't, the coach was found a new job etc as they didn't want the club name in the press. Seems this kind of thing went on not just in football

The Football Association was on Wednesday night under major pressure to reveal why it had banned Dario Gradi “for life” as a bombshell report revealed he had not considered “a person putting their hands down another’s trousers to be an assault”.

Seems this kind of thing went on not just in football Alan Brazil was forced out of Celtic boys because he reported one of his coaches but it was Alan shown the door, read a story that he was at Chester races I think and saw the same coach many years later and chased after him but lost him in the crowd, reckons if he'd of caught him he'd of "hurt him"

I've never openly abused any player at a game directly or online. I feel guilt for walking away and thinking he didn't care about his 'job' when it is now so obvious of all the demons that he was carrying. Watching that last night, it is amazing he carried on for so long - and to be honest even carried on and made it into professional football. The bigger worry for me is how many are in professional football now that are going through the same? I don't want to go over the top but watching that last night made me feel guilty for following the sport and putting money into the game that has let so many people down and wrecked so many lives. Indirectly, i'm part of the problem.

Incredibly! What scared me was that at the same time I was trying to break into that system myself as a young lad aspiring to play pro football. I now feel very, very lucky that I wasn't quite good enough, though at the time that was heartbreaking. But I remember all the whispers. We had known paedophiles in our school as teachers, community workers, sports teachers etc and our parents used to still mix with them and tolerate them to a certain extent because they hung on to professional jobs which seemed to vindicate them, they were tolerated somehow. It's shocking to think it now, and people might question that (like they should!) but it is absolutely true! To a large degree it was accepted which now seems unthinkable.

I was certainly never good enough to make it but did play for the county and at Stoke during my late primary/early high school years and I did go to a couple of camps where Bennell was there but remember very little other than his dodgy shell suit and perm. There would have been people there playing that were being abused by that monster at the time no doubt.........

Like many I thought he was shit, past it and fleecing us for one last pay day and had a negative impression of him for decades. I almost feel I owe him a personal apology despite never having personally said anything to him. Goes to show that you never know what happens behind closed doors and the baggage that people sometimes carry that make or break them. I wish everyone well in the future and hope they can find peace.

Seems this kind of thing went on not just in football That was just the standard response of any institution in those days whether it was football clubs, the Catholic Church, the BBC or anywhere else. Rather than doing the right thing and reporting it, they preferred to cover it up and brush it under the carpet to avoid the bad publicity and scandal in the news. And probably to avoid the scrutiny too which might uncover other dodgy stuff. Scandalous but that's how it was. And without any internet it was very easy to control information and stop things getting out. Nowadays you couldn't get away with that kind of response because the rumours would find their way onto social media and the noise would become too loud to ignore.

Interesting comments. I've done exactly that this morning. I've posted a letter to Paul Stewart, care of Man City football club, this morning so hopefully it will find him successfully. I've used similar words to yours including an apology for the negative impression I had of him during his time at Stoke, apologised for any derogatory words or thoughts I had towards him at that time and expressed how I hoped that both himself and his poor mum can find some peace for the future. His poor mum (and David White's words about his Dad and how he didn't tell him because he knew his Dad would kill Bennell) have been ingrained on my mind since watching the program last night.

i have it recorded and will watch it but it sounds a very tough watch from the comments
just recently rewatched three girls that was on bbc a few years back and is now on netflix, it follows the child abuse rings in Rotheram and the handling of it by police, social services and the CPS, it is shameful the response that these children had and those that did shout were silenced and ignored, that was a harrowing watch
our society still has a long way to go in order to deal with these problems properly, i imagine we are only finding out the tiniest bit of what has been or is going on

Yep true, Church of England also , Sam, not just the Catholic Church. bit of a social myth that one. Shocking what was swept under the carpet in the Anglican Church also. as bad as each other. we'll never know afraction of what went on in British political circles

No more ignoring reported incidents, no more cover up's, no more taking ten years plus to bring these perverts to justice, no more excuses these people are depraved, disgusting dregs of the earth, bring back the death penalty for these criminals.
