I worked with a war/famine charity for 6 years. Sadly I lost a family member in Angola and a good friend in Sierra Leone. If you can tell me how Diana turning up, being photographed and walking through a no danger zone helps then please enlighten me. HALO never saw the point. Michael Jackson turned up in 92 think it was. Shook hands, was given medals of honour but by the time he left nothing had changed. Was great publicity though and hailed as such a great person. I remember Bono and his wife Ali, they did incredible work, especially Ali. Weren't surrounded by press, in fact I don't think it even made the press. The media however would have you believe that the likes of Diana was doing amazing things, you saw that obviously. I really don't see what being photographed with victims achieves...maybe you saw it different . oh yes this word 'awareness'

We have a society of people who crave publicity then complain when unwanted stories are published. Don't buy into this Diana nonsense, she couldn't get enough press around her when needed, I'm shaking an AIDS victim's hand, look at my land mine work then leave me alone in my private life even though I sold my soul and spilled the dirt on TV. Didn't this beautiful soul seriously injure someone? I'm sure roles reversed would have been a different outlook on the domestic abuse front You’re using her campaign to highlight the plight of AIDS victims and those who had their lives changed by land mines as examples of her courting the limelight, really? Its well known that the person who tipped the press off most about Diana was herself, she fed the press stories and photo ops as and when it suited her.

Ralph Legg, Program Manager for HALO acknowledged her important role at the time. And there was still a huge stigma around people with AIDS at the time of her campaigning, from an educational point of view it was an important moment.....

That's 100% true Just a final example, is a clique of agents in the film/tv business who encourage their clients to jump on charities and become spokespeople for them, ie do a UNICEF advert , does wonders for your image. Annoys me so much watching Michael Sheen, Olivia Coleman etc asking us to send £3 to Syria, text BLANKET. Is literally sticking a pin in a list of charities. The so called 'raising awareness' thing in these cases is no more than your face on the campaign. Bob Geldof got grief of many but he got of his arse and did it rather than a 30 second TV plea, Angelina Jolie donated her cut from Tom Raider but didn't go on TV gloating about it or asking us for the price of a cup of coffee . Diana, Elton John, Paul McCartney all these wonderful charity patrons or so you're led to believe.

Caroline's Law. you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/flacks-law?share=1277ba1d-0c2b-4fd9-b3d1-8d5581ca5aca&source=twitter-share-email-button&time=1581861582Sections of the British press & media act with impunity, and more recently there have been a number of cases where they have sought to sensationalise the misfortune of individuals (mainly those already in the public eye, but not always so) to the catastrophic detriment of the individuals' mental welfare. The Jeremy Kyle show, and Caroline Flack being recent examples. We'll never truly know all of the things that were going on in Caroline's mind when she took the decision to take her life. But we do know that sections of the media were quite happy to drag her life through the wringer purely in order to sell a few more papers and it's just not right. What price a life? This isn't the first time this has happened, and I'm concerned that without a new law, it won't be the last. I think it’s dangerous to just blame the media for this. Laura Whitmore was blaming trolls and media today There is no self responsibility from anyone. Here we have a woman with over a 2 million instagram followers posting a picture last year saying she’s had a few issues You get the usual “your so brave etc” replies but continues to post photos of her self oh so glamorous, red carpets etc. She obviously needed help but I have not seen her management pulling her out and looking after her Instead she then allegedly assaulted her partner with a lamp. I’m not heartless and it’s tragic what happened but people are using this to have some sort of faux condolences with an excuse to blame the media 100% and it’s not 100% the case I think you're constantly missing the point I'm making by turning every post I make back to a one fits all Caroline Flack reply. What personal responsibility did Milly Dowler have in inviting press intrusion into her life in the form of phone hacking? The press got off very lightly during the shelved enquiry. I would like some regulation the the form of privacy laws and you obviously the current anything goes free for all so we're probably worlds apart on this one How do we get decent politicians to go into public service when we have this present shitshow of a press?

It's for an enquiry if there is one to make that assessment in the light of any information that becomes available. I must admit to not knowing anything about her apart from the fact that she appeared to be a highly rated presenter which doesn't automatically give the right for a press free for all even if she likes shagging younger men it's her life FFS. It's not a separate issue because it's been raised by friends, rightly or wrongly, and is up for discussion. What if a "decent" politician has a wayward brother or friend or relative is it ok for the press to intrude? I've no idea what a saintly politician would offer, to be honest I'd rather they were good at their job. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Mellor outed for shagging someone in a Chelsea strip it's hardly a criminal offence.

I should also add that I have heard two journalists now say that stories were kept out of the papers as she was personal friends with several editors, the sun that is getting much of the flak actually was supportive of her slamming itv for not standing by her.

As you know I'm not the biggest fan of Mr Corbyn but the article on his son's business is an example of why the press should be regulated.

Is it bit like giving The Hoff credit for the Berlin Wall. You've Googled HALO and used someone who became a member 20 plus years later. Like I said was a sticking pins in a charity then dumping it when your own profile needed highlighting. I guess the press influenced people to believe what they fed them.

In some cases you may be right such as phone hacking etc. but in this case I will disagree. She used the press and social media a hell of a lot to promote herself and aid her career. Both in her professional and personal life. She makes her self the news, this enhances her popularity and career and hence bank balance. You cannot then turn off the press at will when you’ve been caught out doing something wrong. A lot of these celebrities praising her slagging off the press are wrong because many of them use the press for their own means. The poor girl took her own life because she was upset she was about to stand trial for domestic abuse. And like Jim Davidson and Stan collymore for example was about to see her career go down the pan once the details were revealed. That is not the press fault. If she had got help you may have seem a story about her getting prosecuted or in another day a story of manslaughter but she made her self a person of public interest. She did that for her own benefit. It’s ended in tragic circumstances. I have not heard one word in public slating her. But at some stage she lost all self responsibility. Her biggest legacy could be a wake up call for the rest of celebrity land to evaluate their own relationships with the media

In all this, the question must be asked, who the fuck still buys a newspaper anyway?
Buying a newspaper comes only second in stupidity to actually paying for an online news site.

It's absolutely irrelevant to say they've courted publicity therefore they deserve what they get. There's a much wider world out there than Caroline Flack. The moment you kick a ball, hit a tennis ball, act, dance, sing, become an MP you and your family are fair game in press world and it's fundamentally wrong. I'm going to park this here matey because we're not going to agree. On Saturday afternoon I'm going to search out my mate LilSalop and we'll both have a good bitch about you

As you know I'm not the biggest fan of Mr Corbyn but the article on his son's business is an example of why the press should be regulated. I'd agree with you Fel,in that there should be some regulation, and that there is a big difference between the investigative journalism that unearthed say,the Watergate scandal and some hack from the Sun rummaging through someone's wheelie bin for a bit of lascivious muck raking. However the waters are muddied somewhat aren't they? Does leading a life dedicated to public service necessarily entail leading a public life etc? Bernard Ingham,Alistair Campbell (and I dare say Cummings,) et al are all notoriously arch political manipulators and feeders of the press when it suited. I'd wager most press officers/MP's will have politicically sympathetic columnists stored in their contacts to brief when propitious,in much the same way showbiz pr gurus and managers will prep the paparazzi that their client will be strolling in such and such a park with their latest high profile partner to secure some favourable column inches in Hello magazine etc. Rebekah Brooks, editor of the NOTW at the time of one of the phone hacking scandal stories, counted Tony and Cherie Blair,David Cameron,Gordon Brown and his wife amongst her inner circle of friends. Indeed Tony Blair is alleged to have rung Brooks an hour before her arrest to offer his support and advice on how to handle the situation.Granted she had no personal involvement and had in no way inculcated the policy of phone hacking,(a criminal act,) but it ultimately happened on her watch. Subsequently i'm not sure that restraining the press will actually encourage nobler people into politics or actually faculitate more nefarious behaviour such as the expenses scandal imho? As for the private lives of 'showbiz' people,Katie Price, the Kardashians, reality TV contestants (such as the Geordie Shore lot etc,) in particular, their lives are essentially the product they sell, they knowingly flog access to pretty much all areas of it. For me there's little difference in principal between Stephen Gerrard making the national papers for punching a dj in a nightclub and me hypothetically making the pages of the Gloucester Echo were i to spark someone out in my local. However I agree with you on the point of involving family members, most of whom will have not made a decision to lead a public life, children especially. For that reason i'm still largely wedded to the idea that metaphorically speaking, if you go for a swim in shark infested waters, don't be surprised when the sharks run true to form and try to eat you. As an aside Earl Spencer's coruscating attack on the press at Diana's funeral remains one of the most exhilarating pieces of modern oratory i've heard.

Her biggest legacy could be a wake up call for the rest of celebrity land to evaluate their own relationships with the media I honestly believe that people and absolutely certainly their family and friends deserve the right to some privacy.

In all this, the question must be asked, who the fuck still buys a newspaper anyway? Buying a newspaper comes only second in stupidity to actually paying for an online news site. It’s not 1980. You’ll find that twitter and instagram are free.
