You know who his spirit reminds me of? SJW. Grit and determination in abundance, the bloke never stops trying. Mclean is also a better footballer than Super Jon (with all due respect!). Here's to hoping today could kick them all on a bit. Great to see Ryan back in marshalling the defence too. Mclean is also a better footballer than Super Jon (with all due respect!)

So proud of him.
Anyone notice when he went to take a corner in the first half in front of the Wednesday fans who were giving him anti Irish abuse how he pumped up the volume with his hand, 'yeah right, well done, I've heard it all before'. Many of them became apoplectic with rage and I was briefly concerned some of these turkeys may spontaneously combust!
Consequently they threw objects at him as he approached the tunnel at the end and he bent nonchalantly down to pick up a bottle which struck his leg, not sure what he was going to do with it, have a drink from it I think, but 2 security men bundled him away and off down the tunnel.
Love this guy, never takes a backward step despite all the racist (let's call it what it is) shit he is invited to endure from loud mouth cowards hidden behind a line of security men and police.

I am in Londonderry, not Derry , visiting my wife’s family for Christmas. James McLean is a bit of a marmite character over here, as opposed to in England where he seems to be universally hated by all because of his political stance. I feel tremendous loyalty to the people in my wife’s home community and was totally non- plussed when James McLean signed, not through any political or community loyalty or bigotry, but he cause I thought he was a shite signing. My loyalties are first and foremost with the community that is SCFC. Performances like today will prove me wrong, but doubtless won’t change attitudes here. Whisper it quietly, ...... I don’t care🤫Goarrnstoke

The amount of shit he gets from his own fans. He cupped his ears and later apologised numerous times for it in the same match. His hamstring was giving him issues all match, he even came out early second half to stretch it with coach. Then he got studs up his leg before he took that corner too and was limping. So what's your issue with him?

Fantastic today yet again. Ok he’s a very limited footballer however if some of the so called better players put in a shift he does then we would be sitting alongside the league leaders.

No, no, no! That doesn't fit the McClean narrative at all for so many people on this MB.

I am not his biggest fan but James McClean was absolutely immense today. He didn’t give up any cause. He was clearly injured (and never one of those players who would fake an injury) and kept battling. Anyone who has ever played any sport (team, running, racket whatever) at any level will know that an injury saps everything - your timing, ability to stretch and endurance. Full respect to you James and thank you for today. You are welcome round my house for a cup tea any time you are in Sandon.

He was feeling his hamstring after about 10 mins, I thought no way he can last the full game. yes I noticed the same, credit to him for carrying on, with guts and determination, and leading by example, a true warrior, if it had been INCE,the pussy,he would deffinataly have hobbled off, with tears streaming down his cheeks,

I was also thinking his head was going down the last couple of games, but today he was excellent. Not just trying his best, but also achieving his best. For the first time, I can see why Rowett stuck out to get him into this club.
To rate him higher that Walters though is ott. Super Jon was our second highest scorer season after season in the top flight. McClean is an excellent Championship player but not Prem. class.

That fucking 50/50 in the last seconds of the game that won us that corner was pure grit. Absolutely running on empty, he still whips the ball in for the goal.
What a guy.

Agreed. He always gets abuse from the away fans (including Stokies when he played for West Brom). You could even hear the booing against him on the TV against Middlesbrough. But I’ll bet all those booing would not dare do it to his face. Let’s face it, he’s probably the last man you would dare pick a fight with in a pub!

Fantastic today yet again. Ok he’s a very limited footballer however if some of the so called better players put in a shift he does then we would be sitting alongside the league leaders. No we wouldn’t. The whole team is made up of hard working grafters and we were bottom of the league before today. We are in desperate need of genuine skill, creativity and pace.

Who'd have thought, at the start of the campaign, that he might be our Player of the Season? He's gone from one of the worst under Jones to the best under O'Neill. He was hung out to dry as a left back.

There have been a lot, far too many, games where they haven't grafted. I don't really see this lot not grafting. I certainly don't see hard work being the difference between the teams when we lose. It's the fact that we're one paced and predictable and have systematically removed just about every ounce of skill we ever had. It's a very Stoke City attitude to assume that all we need is passhuuunn and desire, and not actually focus on the fact that running your socks off but being a shit footballer isn't a winning formula. We've had a few games during our time in the championship where fight and desire has won us the match, and that's great, but ultimately we're fucking terrible and that's not due to a lack of hard work, it's due to the fact that we have created a team with absolutely no pace or creativity.
