Hopefully if nothing else he has shown MON once & for all what a completely ineffective waste of a squad number Woods is.

I was really pleased for Cousins last night. I thought the stick he took after the opening day defeat to QPR was really harsh and he quickly became the poster boy for the failings of Jones.
Luton were terrible. Reading, you would expect, will be better but equally no great shakes. Hopefully he can continue to do well. If he keeps things simple, wins his tackles and gets about the pitch in front of the back 4, then he will do absolutely fine for us.

I did notice he's also quite good in the air & won his fair share of headers in the middle of the pitch.

The fact remains he managed Luton to a promotion, granted he was wank here but so would have Pep and Mourinho, it goes a lot deeper than managers mate and we would be foolish to say otherwise H

Thought he did ok. His passing was a bit off at times and he was outpaced a couple of times but Luton were dreadful

I too was a little concerned when I saw the starting 11and he was in it. He seems to have been tasked to stay in position, get the ball and pass it on which he did by and large. I also wonder if him getting possession took a job off Joe Allen meaning he didn't spend so much time chasing the ball and contributed to a better performance from Joe. I don't know how he would fare against better opposition though but the same level of effort would be a good start.

5. He was made a scapegoat. His off the ball covering, running was good last night. The dirty work. Fair play. Nice to have a bigger physical presence in the middle to.
Liked it when he gave Edwards a right bollocking half way through the second half...

I am as perplexed as anyone by Woods as he cane to us with a good reputation. However physically he is not a destructive ball winning DM and creatively he does not have the range of passing to be a deep lying playmaker. Defensively he fails to win the ball and creatively he slows down our already slow counter attacking game and gets caught in possession......on the evidence of last night at least I'd choose Cousins ahead of him (although Badou would be first choice for me as DM) but if we are building for a post Badou January let's give Cousins a run and let's sell Woods whilst he still has a reputation to cash in on. The use the Badou/Woods money to buy a destroyer to protect the back 4 and bring back an intimidation factor into the team......a latter day Faye would be perfect.

I think Woods' reputation was built on his ability to keep rotating the ball and pick passes...that requires movement from those around him...something which we have consistently failed with I remember his Stoke debut and being impressed with his passing and how he got us up the field quickly...seems a long time ago now I rather think that Woods' career has suffered for being in the wrong side...he's not alone there. A balanced team is not something we have had for several years, although last night did look a little better...so maybe there is hope

Unlike Woods who has done badly in that role against league one opposition. I am quite prepared to accept that Woods hasn't performed for you this season.
But he made 150-odd appearances for Brentford in the Championship, where I saw most of his home performances. He was routinely excellent throughout, rarely missed a game in a competitive side, and won first the Players' POTY and then the Fans' POTY. This was playing in a defensive midfield role (though he was allowed to to get forward when we were pressing the opposition high in their half).
Now it may be that his Stoke career has to be written off - I don't know enough about it to comment. But after five years of consistent progress at Shrewbury then Bees, there should still be a player in there somewhere.

I think you're probably right, but he needs to move on to get his career back on track.

What position did you finish in the league table when he won those awards?

What playing Cousins did do was release Allen a bit more. Instead of him making stupid rash challenges around our box he was down the other end a bit more.

I'd argue on last night's performance (small sample I know) Cousins's range of passing is better than Woods, he certainly moved the ball quicker in possession.....

I thought the lad done brilliantly last night. From MON previous interview in the week he had a plan to beat Luton, was clear to see it involves Cousins sitting in front of the defence, doing the donkey work so Allen didn't have to. I can't see why he shouldn't start Saturday either, he not as glamorous as Badou or Etebo, but he could be a big clog in the works for us from now on.

I have only seen him twice now, Leicester pre season & last night. Have to say he did nothing wrong in either game. His passing is quick and easy & I am sure given more games it will broaden. I think it was so noticeable that Allen took on a greater orchestrator type role as a result. Also thought Butland looked to have more presence & his kicking much improved.

I thought he played well and effectively in the role given. Stronger tests to come but based on that performance he could become a regular starter.on that. Bet Michael is checking for any NI heritage right now😉.
