If the left back is going to be the main source of width, and thus attacking movement then it's absolutely crucial to bring one in? Gayle can't score if we can't adequately move the ball up the pitch positively. Same applies to our other forwards, especially Adobe who was very successful at Wolves He did ok at Wolves- one great season 2016 think it was

20m worries me as we move into FFP territory. Would be great to get a nippy/pacy striker, but I'd prefer a mid table slog than being Bolton in 12 months. Giving Newcastle 5m, N'Diaye and Pieters for him feels less risky. Also just can't see him coming here over a handful of PL clubs and Fulham. He doesn't guarantee goals to the same level he got at WBA either - as it makes all the difference to be playing next to other really good forwards - which he had with Rodriguez, Barnes (for 1/2 season) and Phillips at WBA - typically in a front 4 with width. Powell, Gregory and Vokes - while a decent Championship set - would be a good notch below WBA's group. If we do have 20m we could spend, would probably plump instead for a creative + goal scoring CM and the LWB, who collectively provide a much better supply to Powell, Gregory, Vokes (and Afobe). And they'd both be 25 or under. How could we end up like Bolton? We have wealthy backers. Btw, there are a number of clubs who've chosen to ignore ffp With regards ffp, yes previously clubs have ignored ffp that's why this year Birmingham were made an example of www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/football-league/birmingham-city-fc-news-points-deduction-penalty-ffp-a8834926.htmlWe simply can't afford the Gayle deal unless we get top whack for Butland & Allen and manage to get something decent for Badou & Bauer & Indi. Last seasons 50 million spree was shit or bust.

Why do we live in a world where Dwight fucking Gayle is a £20 million player? He’s worth 8, at an absolute maximum. If we spend that on Gayle then we’ve officially lost the plot. He’s not worth £20 million but he’s worth more than £8 million.

Wind the tape back 12 months and ask the same bloody question..Do want Stoke City to get back to the premier league ..sooner or later ? If its sooner, you sign the fucker. Give him what he wants and he will score for fun easily at this level.even for a shit team ...This is EXACTLY the same no brainer we had 12 months ago. No doubt it will be debated here ad nauseum as much as in the fucking boardroom ..the classic no fucking brainer.

If Newcastle are asking too high a fee for a £50k a week 29 year old would a loan make more sense?

Ffp is about losses, can they not be offset by the fact that gayle would be included in the accounts as an asset to balance against the outlay? No, you are conflating profit and loss (income minus spend) with assets and liabilities on the balance sheet. Just two different measurements. If ffp was about assets and liabilities, you’d have to depreciate (or inflate) every player”a value each year to get to asset value and then adjust for cash flow- and would probably be ruling that a club was in breach of ffp if their liabilities stacked up over a certain amount. Horribly complicated and subjective.

Next season not this 1 coming he'll be 30 years and 10 months at the start of the season with 12 months left on his contract, that would massively devalue Gayle from a Newcastle perspective so unless they offer/he agrees a 12 month extension I doubt Newcastle would be willing to loan him out again. This is their best chance at cashing in on him.

This is another car crash waiting to happen.
If we signed Harry Kane he would struggle to score 10 goals a season for us.
Stoke has been a strikers graveyard since probably back to Peter Thorne.
We should be looking abroad for value for money,

He’s not worth £20 million but he’s worth more than £8 million. He's worth what a team is willing to pay for him. We failed to score 3 goals in a game all season and some saying we shouldn't spend on someone who guarantees you goals. The games mentioned above like Reading, Sheff Weds etc we had plenty of chances to see out but were hopeless in front of goal at times. If getting goals after our dismal record is losing the plot then let's lose the plot and put right what we so obviously can't do with the bunch we had last term.

A win-win would be to include Ndiaye in any deal if (big if) they're still interested.
(strangely this is from 1 year ago today!)
Newcastle United were very keen on Badou Ndiaye six months ago - and it is understood the Magpies scouted the midfielder for an extended period. However, as we all know, finances proved to be tight during the mid-season window, and Rafa Benitez was unable to make a permanent acquisition and only three loan signings arrived. Once Stoke City offered £14million for Ndiaye, Newcastle knew they were never going to get near that fee and turned their attention elsewhere, with the priority at the time signing a goalkeeper and a striker. I have not heard specifically that Newcastle have rekindled their interest in Ndiaye yet, but I do know Benitez did like what he saw from the midfielder during his time at Galatasaray, having received a number of positive reports. Ndiaye himself appears keen to leave Stoke this summer and, if Mikel Merino departs Tyneside, perhaps the Potters midfielder could be a potential replacement - particularly if he was made available for loan. As things stand though, it does not seem as though Newcastle have made a firm bid, even in spite of these reports out in Turkey.

Simply won't happen. Pie in the sky I'm afraid SGS Why out of curiosity? Not going to play for Newcastle. Went to West Brom but pie in the sky for us? Yes because I think we are done splashing big fees with high wages given the failures of recent such spends - and rightly so. Berahino, Wimmer, Imbula, N'Diaye all on big fees with huge, long contracts. All of which will never ever kick another ball for us. SGS

I wouldn't go to £20m Could see the argument for £13m-£15m though. He isn't 29 until October. 60 goals in 101 games in this league, at a goal every 127 minutes. You'd think we'd have to somehow get rid of Afobe though? And can't see us being able to do that If we could throw Afobe into the deal as well I would certainly pay £15M for Gayle! Sadly the price may go up to £25m if we Afobe part of the deal.

How could we end up like Bolton? We have wealthy backers. Btw, there are a number of clubs who've chosen to ignore ffp They are business people and so they might withdraw support. Do you really think they wouldn’t,t? And ignoring ffp is folly, see Brum last year. If they looked on Stoke purely as a business they would not have put a penny in as Stoke like most football clubs is a cash drain. The only way they would get their money back from Stoke now is to get promoted back to the premier league then the club could I imagine be sold for £100m+ in the championship probably only worth £40m+. Only real threat to continued funding in my opinion would be b365 being floated. Isnt the problem at birmingham the owners dont really have any money.

Any deal has got to be weighted towards performance, he’s a depreciating asset. Even if he has a brilliant season, a top club aren’t going to come in for him due to his age so we can’t possibly make a profit on him. A reasonable fee with potential for that to double with promotion makes total sense. £8m down, £4m for x goals and £4m if promoted I’d say.

I'm sure they don't look at it purely as a business. However, they are hard headed enough to look after their cash if needed we'd be kidding ourselves if we thought otherwise. At some point, an absolute dearth of any returns on investment will surely elicit some entrenchment in one guise or another. A net 96m in the past four years is 24m a season - akin to Leicester some 30 league positions above us. There are shades of grey on this too. Floating is possible. The "Ellis Short approach" of just stopping in investing is another. Then there are different levels of "prudence". Bolton, of course, is an extreme but nontheless feasible scenario for us over say 5 years - they got into the state they did from being a PL, healthy club with a supportive owner, buying players of a simlar ilk to us in their day. Portsmouth, Charlton, Bolton, Sundetland et al too - And that's the sum of all fears!. Not a prediction we'd be like them, just a warning we could be and should avoid at all costs. Live and fight another day in the Champs, strengthening foundations, building a culture, learn how to develop and integrate youth players and learn how to even spot a player who'd make for a good signing. We are different levels of incompetent in all these areas. We'd be running before we can walk with Gayle; attaching a very expensive orangery to our crumbing house, and stressing the foundations even more. Re:- Gayle - I'd say on balance - good player, just the wrong time for us.
