Never intentional that one. Getting on my pips this VAR is now Not a penalty in my opinion. Yeah looked harsh he was jumping for a header where the hell was his arm meant to be?

An absolute joke of a decision. Not sure where football goes from here, the penalty count will exceed the outfield goals tally if things carry on like this.

why do they ask the referee to view it again? they have quite clearly decided it is a pen so why waste time and just tell the ref to point to the spot?

What makes it an even bigger injustice is the fact that Denmark were winning the game with one of the goals of the tournament so far, only to be wiped out by a terrible decision by VAR. Not on!

Argies hassling the referee, asking for VAR. It's the group stage so imagine what it's going to be like in the knockouts? Crowds in the stadium and watching on TV haven't a clue what is going on. Even the Icelanders are at it now... Just not needed. The 'hand of God' goal alone that knocked England out of a World Cup quarter final justifies VAR.

As O’Neill said, what’s he supposed to do with his arm? Does everyone need to jump like Tigger being fired from a canon in future? I know the handball debate is a separate issue, but the ref ran over, looked at one replay and instantly gave it. These grey area decisions shouldn’t be anywhere near VAR

What makes it an even bigger injustice is the fact that Denmark were winning the game with one of the goals of the tournament so far, only to be wiped out by a terrible decision by VAR. Not on! In fairness, VAR hasn't given the penalty, the ref has after having a clear view of the incident. My gripe with a lot of penalties nowadays, not just at the World Cup, is that I don't think 70% of them should be given. They're either minimal contact followed by a dive, or accidental ball to hand. That's not a VAR issue, it's the murky way the game's being administered to create more goals to make it more attractive and saleable.

That shirt pull just on the Danish lad was far more of a pen than the handball... Not even reviewed. VAR is so frustrating

By the comments on here, you would think that all of sport is now being ruined by every form of live analysis. However, cricket gets it right, Rugby Union gets it right, American Football gets it right, Rugby League gets it right, but football has screwed it up

By the comments on here, you would think that all of sport is now being ruined by every form of live analysis. However, cricket gets it right, Rugby Union gets it right, American Football gets it right, Rugby League gets it right, but football has screwed it up It's not difficult to understand. Cricket, rugby union and rugby league all use video replay for matters of objective fact, not opinion. To a small degree, it's also used in rugby union to determine if a tackle was dangerous but even then, they've deliberately taken as much opinion out as possible by ruling that only outcome counts, not intention. Eg if the tackled player landed on his head, it's a red card, end of story, no matter whether the tackler meant it to happen or not. American football does actually have problems with video replay. Years ago, they limited its use because it was taking too long. Now it's fine with matters of objective fact, eg did the ball cross the goal-line, but it's caused major, major controversy in other areas, even where you'd think the answer would be obvious, eg what is or isn't a catch? In football, whether or not the ball crossed the goal-line is objective fact, which is why goal-line technology was a no-brainer and has been an unqualified success. Almost any other decision an official will make, even some aspects of off side, will be subjective and is therefore not well suited to video replay, certainly not as a way of removing any controversy. How the people pushing VAR didn't realize that in advance, and how many people still can't get their heads around it now they've seen it working (the number of people who seem to think it just needs a bit of tinkering and suddenly it will be fine...), I really don't get.

That handball was completely opinion based decision and highly subjective.
To me it was NOT a penalty. It was a marginal subjective decision. You can watch the replay a million times and not know if it was accidental or deliberate handball.
How can VAR be used in that situation?

The goal line shit has been great, and I think the offside decisions and absolutely clear fouls (however many of them there are) will work. But anything ambiguous and up for interpretation should be left well alone. It’s creating more controversy

Except of course that VAR was used to send a French player off against New Zealand last Saturday for just the thing you have described and that decision has now been overturned on appeal. One of the other issues in football is that at corners and free kicks there will usually be 4 or 5 defenders wrestling with attackers and 4 or 5 attackers doing exactly the same to defenders, so how is the decision made about who is the "most guilty" party?

There are a lot of harsh decisions at the moment ...
I just rang my mate
He said " I have just been sacked for downloading internet porn on the works computer , and causing everything to crash " I said " blimey !! That's harsh " He said " yeah , well , they don't mess about in Air Traffic Control "

Excellent reversal of a penalty decision there (don't understand how he's not booking Neymar mind you).
That would have been a massive injustice against a battling Costa Rica team in favour of big-time Brazil, off the back of a player conning the ref into a penno.
Bravo VAR there.

The first override of a penalty decision by VAR. Glad to see that even the VAR officials appreciate that a touch on the chest is not necessarily enought to make someone fall over!

What's slightly concerning is the Costa Rica players had to really protest a lot to the ref to get him to review it.

What's slightly concerning is the Costa Rica players had to really protest a lot to the ref to get him to review it. I'm not sure that was the case. While the CR players were at him, the ref put his finger to his ear as though he was getting a message. I presume that was the VAR boys telling him to hold on while they reviewed it. They then 'invited' him to have a look at it. I think it would have been reviewed even without the protests.

Why not do like cricket and allow so many appeals per half for each side
It would cut out some play acting and appealing for everything
It would take the initial decision to review away from VAR

VAR spoils the match , I don't like it
Worse , I think it's encouraging kids and adults in amatuer to football , to start claiming for instance a goal is 2 millimetres offside , and then arguing with the ref about it .
The ref , should give it as he sees it , and that should be the end of it .
And if he doesn't think it's clearly offside , he should give it as a goal .
Bizarrely , the one thing it might be useful for , deciding whether a player was fouled in the box ( i.e a penalty ) during all the Argy bargy that goes on with free kicks and corner kicks ( and let's be honest the ref can't see everything ) , they don't actually use it !! As evidenced in Tunisia v England again and again . Or again and again and again ! I lost count !
