That's not sustainable as an argument on its own momo. You could use it against literally any system that has ever "accommodated for" a miscarriage of justice, including the current one which doesn't use VAR (in fact even more so). Its a system where effectively 7 referees faced with overwhelming evidence to the contrary chose to ignore one of the most accepted and established no no's in the game. Either the system is broken or it is corrupt. Yes that one was particularly mystifying. The process needs improving too, there are too many people involved and nobody knows what's going on and who is making the decision. It's particularly farcical when the ref is holding his ear while players harass him for minutes on end and *then* he decides to go and have a look himself. But overall I'd say it's reducing the number of poor decisions, which in principle is hard to argue against. Lots of room for improvement.

So VAR just overruled an incorrect offside flag to send Germany crashing out of the World Cup bottom of their group. I fucking love VAR.

On balance I am much, much more in favour of VAR than not for exactly the reason in the Germany game.

Imagine the sense of injustice if that goal had been disallowed and then Germany went up and got a penno

It's a great system and totally has a place in modern football, but only when it has been developed and made more efficient. The biggest issue with it, IMO, is the half cocked nature in which it has been foisted on the World Cup, with officials that have never used the system before.
It must be persevered with and it must be made better. Today an incorrect decision could have changed the whole face of a World Cup and that can't be right. The downside to it is a few incorrect decisions have probably also shaped the World Cup in one way or another.
Long term though, it just has to come right in and come in properly.

It has the potential to be a wonderful system and in my view could learn a lot from Test cricket. Spectators need to know what’s going on and the ref could be linked to the PA system to achieve this. Each team could be allowed say one challenge in each half and that would have to come from the captain. Any player other than the captain simulating the VAR screen should receive a booking.
Just my thoughts.
