This is good news indeed.
Irrespective of who we think our manager should be, he is going to need new players.

Great. 18m on another bag of shite. Hughes' career absolutely depends on this transfer window, if he is to stay. Trust me, he won't be spending 18 million on anyone, unless they're shit hot.

The 'Subject' of this thread is a little misleading. The article actually says: " Whoever is manager come the January transfer window, chairman Peter Coates says there will be money to spend."

Its not just Hughes though, Scholes has got to pull the stops out too instead of dragging deals out where players lose interest and go elsewhere.

January is difficult to get good deals done as clubs do not want to let their best players go mid-season. I'd try for a loan for Luke Shaw personally, "swoop" for a right back who is out of favour (Daryl Janmaat?) or out of contract in the summer (an African right back playing in Germany was linked not too long ago), and get in a defensive midfielder ("you know who" would be my choice!). The big money, if any, should be spent on a leader of the line, but who we can persuade to join us in our current state is anyone's guess.
It is, at least, pleasing to see a recognition that we must avoid relegation at all costs and that money will need to be spent to do so. Not so long ago the message was rather different, but I suppose the past few weeks of dire performances have woken Coates up to the reality of our situation.

Unfortunately Mr Coates it's a little too late.
A few million isn't going to cut it WHOEVER the manager is.

Interesting how they mentioned the Jesé loan could be open to termination too.

We need 3 defenders alongside Zouma when fit Plus a holding midfield player, and proven goal scorer. I was just going to get on to that. Trying not to alarm myself!!! Oh and a winger with pace who can look up occasionally when he crosses a ball

We need 3 defenders alongside Zouma when fit New right and left back and Bruno once fit again. We need to face the fact that Shawcross is no longer one of our best two centre halves.

I suppose Coates didn't feel like sharing your Christmas spirit that you alluded to in the admin poll thread!

We need a minimum of four new first teamers, not squad players, genuine "one of the first names on the team sheet" starters. Whether the current recruitment team can manage that and whether old man Coates will sanction the spending remains the big question.

Whether the current recruitment team can manage that and whether old man Coates will sanction the spending remains the big question. That won't happen in a January window. I'll have a small side bet with anyone that wants one that we won't have signed any first team 'shoe-in' players by the start of the last week of the window!
