Not if you are scoring 3 you aren't. H You cant seriously justify that. All good teams are built on a solid platform from the back which allows the creative players the freedom to perform. Liverpools defence is fucking shocking. Very easy to justify. H

I don't dispute we've regressed. The whole argument is whether the architect of the project is the man to put it right. There is a compelling argument that Hughes is precisely the man to do so, and an equally compelling counter argument. Right now, I just about verge on the side of give him the opportunity to do so. There is an interesting parallel with film making - please switch off now people reading this who aren't fussed about this kind of thing - but I had a conversation within someone who works for Lucas Arts t'other week. He was telling me how the Young Han Solo project was canned at 80% completion stage and a whole writing and directing team brought in because they thought the film being made, whilst 'great' wasn't the type of film they originally intended it to be. So they started from scratch and burnt $80m in the process. The mind boggles. The reason I mention this, is football teams are perennial works in progress are they not. Films compete at the box office once released, whereas football teams have to keep going regardless. To further muddy the waters, it's like tweaking the motor car as its hurtling around the race track. I've no doubt Hughes knows all too well what's gone tits up - it's his project after all - and I think its the fuck ups, the flop signings and so on that have prevented us going really high in the table. I mean, imagine if Imbula had clicked, and Berahino too and Shawcross not been injured and more recently Butland. In a parallel universe not that different to Stoke's reality, we could be caning everyone in site (apart from Man City). But we're not and I know that as acutely as anyone as I try and temper my nippers disappointment with results. I'm just not sure that binning Hughes will result in a Blockbuster. Just like Young Han Solo, they'll probably still end up with a film that makes a few quid, doesn't win any awards and divides opinions amongst the fans. I think the real comparison between the two is that movie studios are notoriously risk-averse and so, increasingly, are Premier League owners. There is just much less scope to take chances and be bold and come up with new ideas. So in Hollywood you get a slew of tepid remakes and sequels because they’re an established ‘brand’ with a built-in audience, and though studios claim to want new ideas, if an Edgar Wright or a Lord & Miller start taking things in a direction that isn’t expressly the vision the producers have in mind, it’s adios muchachos. In football, you get owners desperate to stay on the gravy train turning to ageing British managers who play conservative, cautious stuff, like Moyes, Allardyce and Hodgson. Thankfully in both realms there are those still thinking outside the box, be it the genre films Blumhouse are making on a budget, or the likes of Watford rolling the dice on Silva or even putting structures in place that don’t turn the manager into a tin god and tie the club’s fortunes completely to the gaffer’s personality and whims. Edgar Wright's latest Baby Driver is similar to Hughes' Stoke tenure in that they both started off so well, promised excellence and then meandered off into directionless nonsense that you just wanted to end.

It very much depends on what you consider to be a good side. Liverpool for instance have very shaky foundations. They might not win anything and that won't be good enough for them but they're one of my favorite sides to watch under Klopp that would or should be good enough for us. Its extremely unlikely we're going to win the league, entertainment and enjoyment should be our biggest factor after avoiding relegation. This grinding football that Hughes has adopted is less productive than when he had the balls to select attacking lineups and formations(not that the formation itself is defensive, the way he sets it up is) and its shit to watch too.

A question to all the supporters who thinks Hughes will turn this mess around.I would like to know what argument/evidence do you have that he will? His past record for full seasons. Last season was the first time he has finished in the bottom half, and we were a few points short of our usual 9th place under Hughes. We are only a few points off 9th place now with two thirds of the season to go and Hughes teams are slow starters and generally perform better last half of the season. What happened last season is now irrelevant there is no logic in talking about wins in the last 20 games, 30 months, etc. Hughes removed a host of players from the squad in the summer as did Koeman. It takes time for a new squad to settle and start playing well together. 13 games is no where near enough. Despite the posts above about negative football, we are the 9th highest goal scoring team. Would you really prefer us to be like Burnley? The defenders have been playing badly, but they have been unsettled by injuries (we had to revert to Johnson, Indi, and Pieters at the back against Chelsea) and now Butland is out. We are also a lot more solid when Cameron plays in midfield. We gave it a go against ManC and paid for it. But defending can be fixed as can set piece play. We were lousy and corners and are now the highest scorer in the Prem from corners. If you want to see goals, go to Stoke matches, the fourth highest number of goals so far in the Prem. Top scoring team against the top two clubs. The goals conceded can be fixed. After last season's disappointment, Hughes is rebuilding the squad, give him time. It can't be done in one summer. Most of the clubs in the Prem are trying to find a 15+ goals a season striker, and WBs are as rare as hen's teeth. There is no supermarket you can pop down to for quality Premier League players. You have to try what you can get to come to Stoke. Foreign players particularly take time to adjust. We are playing Liverpool tonight, a club that has spent c£400m (four hundred million pounds!!!!) on players since Hughes came to Stoke. So I don't expect we will win! I do expect we will finish in the top half of the table. I believe, and I think Coates does, that Hughes is the best manager we are going to get, certainly this season. The players are behind him, all the fans should be too.

Make the defence better by playing on the front foot thereby giving them less opportunity to make mistakes. That seemed to be Hughes' initial philosophy when he arrived. I welcomed it, I hate all this obsessing about defence, defence, defence.

Your keeper is only aa good as your defence, your striker is only as good as the service he gets from the midfield. It's not rocket science if a twat like me understands the principles. H

If we were experimenting with our shape, it would be understandable (it takes time for players to understand where they are needed and what they have to do - who marks the space and who goes for the ball) but we are 13 games in and stuck with the same shape, yet we are still getting found out with the same old whipped balls to the far post, where the late runner has all the time in the world because the full back thinks it's the centre-half on that sides area to defend the space and vice versa.

You have to understand the thinking behind the current popularity of 3 at the back systems. They are an effective way of balancing out a side to counteract lone striker systems. Three defenders are sufficient to marshall a lone forward and that gives an extra body to employ further up the pitch to support the attack. You can't just employ 3 centre halves to defend the narrow width of the area effectively doing what 2 of them do in a flat back four therefore they need to go out to defend wide areas when their wingback is out of position and bring the ball out into midfield when you have the ball otherwise a system adopted to make you more fluid will have the opposite effect. Which is what we are seeing on the vulnerable left of our defense, Ramadan who is being named as 1 of a front 3 is being used predominantly to shield the left wing back and the left centre half and therefore not contributing upfield as he should be. The vulnerable players remain vulnerable and are still making mistakes that are costing us goals, they need dropping not sacrificing an attacking player in a vain attempt to protect them. Basically Wimmer is too slow to play on the left of a back 3 and will always be vulnerable to balls played behind him out wide. Playing BMI instead of him would improve matters immediately. We'll still be trying to play a wingback system without wingbacks but at least we won't have built in vulnerability in our back 3.

That's the main reason that I don't think he'll go. Though I think he needs to. I think there's a difference between mard-arsing, and just being thoroughly piss-bored and frustrated with the bilge I've witnessed numerous times over the last 18 months or so. Fair comment. Things are obviously not right. But some of the Anti Stoke bile posted on the Oatcake over the last 6 months makes me heave. Some 'alleged' Stoke fans seem to be using Hughes as a stick to beat the club with. Any excuse and it's moan moan moan. Positive criticsm is helpful. Constant negative moaning is toxic. Spot on. If we as fans don't back the team tonight we want fucking.

He hasn't supported your argument at all and nobody has mentioned them getting a striker. As I've argued above in a more detailed way if we could become a more effective team going forward a team like us who is not under pressure to win silverware could cope with a flaky defense like Liverpool's. Being on the front foot more would make the defense less liable to make mistakes. We'd play more in the other half of the pitch and should score more goals and win more games plus and its a big plus our games would be more enjoyable which is worth 3 or 4 places in the league in itself. Its essentially what Hughes did here for two and a half seasons, its not some pie in the sky made up bollocks.

Standard of football is better than last season, a few key additions in Jan and we could really click Is it? You actually like the sort of football we are playing, cagey slow football, 9 men behind the ball, no striker, one of the named forward 3 playing where you'd expect to see a wingback. Its shit we're actually committing less players to the attack than we were last season really boring safety first football. And yet weirdly we are scoring more and conceding more than in other seasons. Personally I think if I had been watching our games as a neutral I would have enjoyed the majority of them. Shame that you don't but each to their own. You're probably more of a connoisseur than I am.

I'm not a Hughes hater but here are the facts
Under Pulis we were a mid table team who were solid at the back and we always had a decent chance of a cup run
We replaced him with a man charged with taking us to the next level
well he hasn't done it we are still in same place and id even say weve gone backwards
Hughes has had enough time now to buy his own players and put his own stamp on the team
we are still a mid table team and regularly exit both cup competitions early - so we haven't moved forward weve gone back !!!!
More exciting football ? id disagree we flatter to deceive we play 10 backwards /sideways passes for no apparent reason before trying to move forward
this 3 at the back isn't working for us we are wide open and anyone can see that yet he perseveres
we are conceding at least 2 goals per game even against bottom clubs which means we need to score at least 2 every game to have chance of even getting a point
Bottom line is I'm just not enjoying watching us at the moment I just cant get excited about it
My biggest worry is Shaq said at the start of season we need to invest and push on he was keen to be involved with the growth of the team
However watching his recent awesome form how long will it be before he says fuck this and gets a better offer from "the shit" or the "bin dippers"
I'm ok with keeping Hughes but he needs to sort this shit out starting with going back to 4 4 2

Unless you get a bit of magic from Shaq we're awful to watch` Yes I agree that when we take the lead, we become too safety first and try to just hold on rather than pushing on for a 2nd or 3rd. But I think that is just a natural consequence to a poor run of results. If we were in a more comfortable league position where the consequence of losing wasn't so great then we would probably look to commit more to attack.

8 wins out of 32. Why stop at 30? That's still poor The 6 from 30 is a figure I read on here the other day.
