So you think Coates record in the past decade isn't very good then ? What were you hoping for ?.. Three Champions League finals, Two FA Cups and a Partridge in a Pear Tree ? 🤣 I think he put money in and reaped the reward of doing so but he/they have put nothing in for over 2 years which has coincided with regression on the pitch. Unlike you I don't think he's made any astounding decisions I don't think Pulis is the only manager who could have got us promoted given the resources he made available. I think he should have got rid of him much sooner as has been the case with several other managers he has employed over his entire time owning the club. I'm firmly of the belief that he should have jettisoned Hughes at the end of last season even though I agree overall he's done a good job. Things had evidently gone stale and I think keeping him on is every bit as risky as bringing in a fresh face with new ideas and a fresh approach. You're the one setting stupid targets not me, we obviously have very different ideas on the shelf life of football managers at the same club I'd say 3 to 5 years max. This will be Hughes 5th year and in his case I think its a year too long. [bra After the Arsenal home game i wanted Hughes out.. But that was just me being overemotional. When i look at his record as Stoke manager, i think he deserves another crack this season. But if things start going pear-shaped after a few months i'm sure Coates will wield the axe, and rightly so. He knows how important it is to keep Stoke in the Prem ! When you say things about Coates like "imo his overall record isn't very good" you make yourself look rather silly....Look at the history of SCFC and you'll find we're enjoying one of our best periods ever. But people like you always want more....Tut-tut. I've just noticed our friend Benji agrees with you a lot...Need i say more....😉

The one clear difference between good Coates and bad Coates is the record of investment and guess what he/they have stopped putting any new money into the club despite burgeoning wealth.

Until the window is closed I can't judge Coates on spending this summer but he's hardly stopped bankrolling the club. These are only rough figures but 13/14 net spend 6M 14/15 net profit 1.5M (Free transfer bonanza) 15/16 net spend 20M 16/17 net spend 30M That's 50M over the last 2 seasons, the problem is it's mainly been wasted on a Midfielder that hasn't embraced the Premier league, A midfielder that's neither a DM or AM and a striker that doesn;t seem to fit the system. As I say I won't judge Coates just yet but I don't think he's retired the Dong just yet.

I'd hoping he'd ask Hughes why he can't organise his defense, why is the midfield so poor and why after 3 seasons we were still relying on stalwarts of the Pulis era to get us the results. Perhaps he did ask this and this is why Hughes said the youngsters would get a chance, (hopefully they will take it and give us something to get behind). At the moment though we look poor even though they are meaningless friendlies. Couldn't agree more

If Coates fails to back Hughes and we struggle again, then you can come on here and have a moan.....But barring serious injuries i think will finish top 12, no probs. But that's just my opinion...Outside the top 6 or 7 the Prem isn't very good is it ?

Exactly you only want to talk about a period that is very much admittedly net positive yet how many years has PC been chairman/owner overall. What constitutes backing him in your opinion. We are now in a territory where he'd have to allow him all the incoming fee's and a reasonable transfer budget from turnover(we've spent about £30M previously in a season without him putting his hand in his own pocket) plus him making some sort of investment by himself/bet365 before you could say they'd really backed him at all. Given our record of getting deals done can you really see us spending £70M which would involve them actually putting in about £10M. Can you really see that happening?

I wonder how much time Peter Coates spends thinking about Stoke City FC and planning its future compared with how much time he spends on BET 365 business. Maybe 5-10%?

I don't think he has anything to do with running bet365. He holds 10% of the shares due to the initial capital investment to enable his kids to get it off the ground Denise owns slightly over 50% and John around 40% if any shares are held outside the family its a very inconsequential amount just as is the case with Stoke City.

So, perhaps you'd like to share your own first hand experiences of running a Premier League Football Club. It'll make interesting reading to see a different perspective, we can compare the decisions you took and how much of your personal wealth you invested in making your time as chairman such a success. Peter Coates can obviously learn much from you and identify exactly how he's made such a pig's ear of his time as chairman of SCFC. As I'm sure he's aware, you're never too old to learn.

No he's made a right pigs ear so far hasn't. Took a struggling club that was probably heading for Div 1 appointed a manager everyone thought was useless. Took us to the premier league. Kept us there. Appointed another manager no one wanted who delivered three top half finishes. Delivered players of the calibre of Shaqiri Arnie Bojan and Affelay Quite frankly I think if we'd have stuck with the Icelanders we'd have been much better off

If I was wealthy I doubt I go within a million miles of investing in football. If I did it would be because I was so wealthy I could afford to lose/write off everything I invested into it. Even then I'd employ a sharp operator to run things. Why do you have to have personally done these things to be able to compare whether someone has a particularly spectacular track record or not. Does Coates chairman/ownership actually stand up to scrutiny if he's not going to be a benefactor. Never won silverware, overseen relegation, employed some god awful managers. Peoples gratitude to him is and rightly should be that he came back and put good money into the club after the complete balls he'd made in his first stint. I'm sorry if it grates on you but Peter Coates isn't a genius at running a football club. Do people like you struggle to form an opinion on anything you haven't personally done? Dare you form an opinion on a player because you've never played professional football?

All that was financed from within the turnover of the club itself so how is he bankrolling the club? by not taking money out? generous bastard.

As the squad is at present I would say that we could easily get relegated, particularly if the tough start produces very few points which is on the cards. We need to get our business done quickly as waiting until the end of august could see us 3 games into the season and 0 points. We are then in big trouble particularly if we don't get these players over the line.

iI think the purse strings have been drawn as it appears PC doesn't trust LMH to identify the players we need. LMH may well have said what he needs but the inability of Scholes and Cartwright to get them over the line possibly because we aren't prepared to pay either the transfer fee or wages required to get better players in.At the end of the day PC is the boss and the buck stops with him.If he doesn't trust LMH with his money why is he still the manager?

A couple of points off 8th last season. Only because we had a purple patch in the middle of the season. Our starting and ending form were regelation standard. Â Nothing in the pre-season so far suggests we are anywhere near ready and our best player has left. You can't only judge on the parts of the season that fit your agenda. Your finishing position is the culmination of the entire season. Regardless of form trends, we finished a couple of points shy of the top eight, and purple patch or not, that's a fact.

Numerous internationals and Champions League winners. Are we too good to go down at the expense of the likes of Brighton, Huddersfield, Swansea, Burnley and Watford? Who are the champions league winners and how much did they actually contribute to their team winning the champions league and how long ago was it ?
