This ranks nowhere near as good as the late 60's and early 70's. I understand that people who don't know any better have to think that what they see is the best ever, but they need to read a little history.

This has got to rank as the best period in the clubs history - and a lot of that is down to Peter Coates. Its not perfect and it is frustrating to see us to struggle against teams who are and probably will ever be in a different financial league to us. To blame Peter Coates for Stoke not being the size of Manchester or London shows a lack of basic human geography. Peter Coates has put a lot of money and personal investment into Stoke - not to respect that is actually a sad reflection on some of our fans. As Blackburn, Bolton and Villa fans will probably advise - be careful what you wish for. And Charlton.

I understand that people who don't know any better have to think that what they see is the best ever, but they need to read a little history. I lived through that era and you are right the first half of the 70s was our glory period for obvious reasons. But not the late 60s when we generally struggled and were grateful for Banks in the side. If Oatcake had been about then, there would have been blue murder on here about Waddington, especially signing older players (the list seemed endless). Things took off when we bought Greenhoff and brought back Ritchie (an old player?!) in summer 69. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1969%E2%80%9370_Stoke_City_F.C._seasonBut we should not belittle recent years 3 x 9th place and 2 points off 8th place. The Premier League is a whole lot tougher than the 1970s first division when we achieved just 2 x 5th places. The playing field was a lot leveler then, and within reason any club could break the transfer record. Unlike today when 6 teams totally dominate the transfer market and even half of them don't win the Prem., at least not for a long time. In 74 ManU were relegated, that is inconceivable today. So I agree the football is nowhere near as good and it is unlikely we will ever break through the top clubs strangle hold; only bigger clubs like Everton, West Ham and Newcastle could do that. But since Leicester did "the impossible", we live in hope. I think Coates is right though, when he says the present Stoke squad is the strongest ever, mainly thanks to his choice and support of the management.

I think PC is going down the right lines I'm just not sure he and MH are singing from the same song sheet
PC - self sufficiency give youth a chance. Look to the future.
MH - play it safe don't take a chance on youth. Go back to the oldies.
I'm with PC with a little bit of experience as being the way forward.

And therein lies the problem Individually both approaches are likely to see us struggle in this bastard of a league. Miss mashed together we are in deep shit. You have to spend big on young, strong, athletic, powerful players to even survive and you need a manager who will galvanise those types of players into a force. Brutal truth is that we needed to move Hughes out and install a new manager and back then back him heavily financially.

One if our problems is our match day and commercial income is low compared to a lot of clubs so if the family did invest more money it wouldn't be sustainable. They are trying to build a sustainable club and we should thank them for it . Having said that I'm not convinced about the type of team we have suits our type of club . We need to get back the identity we had when we.first.came up . Not.the same football but a mentality that it.is.always a battle especially against the big clubs .

The sixties was a good era despite the sale of Ritchie to Sheffield Wednesday reducing the goal tally of the forward line. but the football was attractive and the quality of the players better than it had been a few years earlier. Players such as Eastham,Viollet, Dobing, Vernon,Mcilroy, Kinell, Setters, Palmer, Bloor, Burrows, later Marsh and Pejic not to mention the Hudson/Greenoff era in the seventies, would have walked into the present Stoke side. Waddington's record in the transfer market was exceptional.
