I never thought Stoke would even grace the premier league, i am forever grateful to Coates for that and would never question his decisions. Hughes has arguably done better on a tighter budget, so going back to that seems a good move until he has earned a few extra million. He has wasted money on big signings, now he has to be more thorough with his targets, it makes sense to me. It doesn't make a blind bit of sense. All it does is risk our Premier league future. For the sake of sentimentality in that you don't think its fair to sack a manager you don't really trust. The squad is crying out for investment not to provide it could be suicide. I wouldn't care if Hughes was sacked tomorrow, i don't mind him staying either. He needs a kick up the arse, if he has to sell some players to fund rebuilding the team then so be it. We have invested plenty into youth development and it is about time he made use of it. If we were in any trouble we will probably invest in January. I am not to worried, i think we have some brilliant players here already. It's fair to say we have had a poor season, but i still have faith they will do better next season.

No club has a perfect scouting system, all clubs make mistakes. Our club appears to be worse than most with a hit and miss approach. We have gained some bargains but our "record" purchases haven't turned out well. At least with home grown Academy players we know what we are getting but none have yet been given much opportunity to show their merits. Hughes can only go by what he is told, Coates provides the money and Scholes seals the deal. All three must rely to a great extent on the ability of our scouting network. It is there that we need to strengthen if we are to succeed. I remember seeing on the Oatcake a posting by someone who had watched Imbula a few times, expressing his disbelief that we paid good money for him. We seem to have a FIFA 17 approach which must end. To be fair Imbula seemed a bit of a beast of a signing when he came. The problem can only be the player, there is a fantastic player in him, does he realise it or does he even care? Trying to take players on whilst on the edge of our 18 yard box wasn't his best move, and to do it over and over was naive. I was quite shocked at how poor he started the season, i like many others expected so much more. I agree, he appears to have no defensive ability or desire to learn Like you I feel there is a quality player in there but we quickly learned his weaknesses. This is exactly my point about scouting; on the surface a great player, considered in more depth not so good. Hughes has been blamed for signing him but perhaps he was mislead?

Unless Hughes knew but thought we had a solid defensive mentality at the club which would help him in that area. He is still young though so i won't write him off yet, whether he will become a top player here or not though is another thing. I personally would try to keep him at the club and work on his game more.

Can't be arsed to read beyond the OP, but really what the hell is happening to us?
We are in the richest league in world football. We have been in this league for longer, since our promotion, than anyone outside of the top 7. We are owned by local people who are long term supporters who are definitely NOT A PROBLEM.
Peter Coates did not shine in his first stint as our owner. He has more than made up for his previous failings.
Many clubs have owners who are problems: Leeds, Derby, Forest, Coventry, Blackburn, Bolton etc.; we are not one of them.

Take a pickup and put a big sign on the back saying Coates and Hughes out then. Thanks for telling me the company they run. I wouldn't have guessed. So tell everyone who you think should buy SCFC and who should manage it. And be careful what you wish for. how big would you like the board be.

Is it just Hughes who's fucking everything up or is our lack of investment compared to other clubs the reason that we've gone backwards. We seem to have a small club mentality and all the board members seem old with a lack of fresh ideas. I give up ...

Thought I'd wandered onto vales forum with so much desperation to blame the owner for something.
The problem is, we've had a disappointing year. Like when people get to the end of a year and have less savings than the year before, or when people get to the end of the year and their partner isn't in better shape than the year before. Disappointing things happen in life.
If there's really a case of incompetence behind the scenes it tends to stand out a mile off like with Wigan and Sunderland. or with Portsmouth and Leeds. Stoke weren't riding their luck, now it could always become the case in the future but there isn't any problem. It was just a shit year. I appreciate that some people have probably had lives that improve year on year, with absolutely no regression or failing to achieve targets but if that applies to you then you should be counting your blessings.
Some of you must have really challenging lives, like how do you cope having the same sofa for 2 years - if it hasn't improved in the second year surely you want rid? Perhaps you start thinking maybe if you had a better house the sofa would look better?

Three 9th's with a load of TP signings playing big roles. Why didn't TP get the same results then? There's no way of knowing how he would have faired in the seasons after he left. Prior performance would suggest, however, we would have played the same dour, sluggish style, and quit once we had 40 points.

Coates' attitude towards these issues is arguably a negative, some might say its a strength. Is Peter Coates, the man whos done so, so fucking much for this club, a problem? Of course hes fucking not. I hate this place at times. Is Jack Butland a problem, because his ability in the ball isnt perfect?

Absolutely ridiculous thread! The bloke has invested millions and millions into this club to get us to where we are today. Where we are today is in a position to state that 13th isn't good enough and poor football alongside this means that the manager is being called into question. Whilst sentiment has little place in football in the case of our owners and where we are it certainly does!
Stable premier league team who can actually cope with having a Manager losing his marbles for a period of 18 months and still comfortably secure premier league football no matter how badly we are performing.
An academy which has had multi millions invested into it which hopefully will begin to bare fruit sooner rather than later. (I actually think this is the main driving force behind the prudent transfer policy as we almost definitely need to start bringing our youth into our team)
Self sufficiency, we posted a profit last year which is a rarity in this league!
We are expanding our stadium and improving seating and facilities throughout.
The club is still growing and it is swelling with the influence of the Coates family and I am so grateful we have them!
The problem is our transfer team and manager, if they don't get it correct the first 6-8 games of the new season they will be fast out the door!

I absolutely agree that this is a needless thread, but I will post again to say I am fully in support of PC and will be eternally grateful for what he has done for "my club".
I'm sure there is a better owner out there somewhere, but I very much doubt it.
I'm also sure there is a better manager (there always is), but until someone can convince me there is someone better than MH (and that he would come to Stoke) then I will continue to give my support to MH. It is not unquestioning support or uncritical at times but I believe he and his management team have gone through a learning curve in the last 2 seasons and will be all the better for it.
The club has spent some large sums of money on players in the last 2 seasons and it has not achieved expectations. It would be now be natural to be a lot more cautious, but I hope they don't keep "having a punt" at bringing highly talented players to the club, who's career's have gone awry.

I don't know if Coates is a problem.
Not backing the manager, whoever it is, is definitely a problem.
I wonder if the reason Hughes has kept his job is because the club wanted to not spend this summer?

Turning a profit in this league is no longer bucking a trend the vast majority of teams are turning a profit at this time, ours is one of the smallest. You then go on to highlight a problem with the manager and transfer team and say they will be fast out of the door if they don't get it right in the first 6 to 8 games next season. Doing that would make not sacking them this closed season and starting afresh an act of gross incompetence.

The club are reigning in spending, why? If it's lack of faith in Hughes then sack him now. Not sacking him and not spending points to something else.

I'm honestly worried about the direction of our club for the first time in over a decade. Its not just Hughes every rumour every utterance from the club seems like an organisation in malaise. It would be so sad for Peter Coates to oversee the demise of his legacy with regard to the club but I fear current policies will lead us back where we were when he returned (Championship).

Without Peter Coates and his willingness to effectively give vast sums of money to Stoke City Football Club, I'm not sure where we would be right now. It certainly wouldn't be the Premier League. The Coates family have effectively financed the dream that we've all witnessed.
He has invested massively in every aspect of the club. He's built a good, competitive squad. If the management team really want to bring in a certain player, I believe he would back them again.
He's a steady hand on the tiller, won't panic, knows football well and loves the club. My reading of it is that he doesn't just want to throw money at it, he wants to bring some academy players into the first team squad but he wants to see us improve - in terms of performance and results.
To suggest that PC is part of the problem is, in my opinion, misguided, ungrateful and ridiculous.
