I will be devastated if Ryan doesn't see out the rest of his top-flight career at Stoke City. It's clear for all to see that, by his own stratospheric standards, Shawcross has had a poor season. People talk about there being no room for sentimentality in football. If I agreed with that I'd argue that, just for the chance that a full summer of rest could be the final catalyst for Ryan's injury problems finally healing fully then I'd justify a contract extension on that basis. I'd also argue that Shawcross at his current level is still clearly a first-team calibre player in our squad, and it would take one hell of a fruitful foray into the transfer jungle for Shawcross to be relegated to squad player. When you consider how difficult it is to acquire top-class CB's then that possibility seems rather improbable. But in actual fact I don't agree with the notion that there's no room for sentimentality. In an era where we've been spoilt with heroes and legends, Ryan Shawcross stands atop that glorious pile as THE DEFINITIVE legend of a great era for Stoke City Football Club c.1863. It will break my heart if he doesn't see out his English top-flight career in the famous red and white of Stoke City. In a game whose soul is constantly being eroded by the corporates and the fatcats a bit of sentimentality is one of the few things we can still hang our hats on. Give that man a bloody contract!
