I'd sell him if the price is right, personally. No doubt he'd be a massive hole to fill simply by virtue of the position, but he's not irreplaceable. Certainly not post injury. Sell him, put the money towards a better investment. yeah we always have Wollscheid to fall back on if we cant sign a replacement

Bizarre that he hasn't been offered an extension and equally as bizarre is the reaction of some fans! His renewal should be a priority IMO. Perhaps he hasn't reached the high standards he's set in the past but he's the club captain and modern day legend. If we let go of half the players some suggest on this board, we'd have no bloody squad!

I struggle to understand how people would seemingly let him depart without a care. Same with Jonny Walters. Don't people realise that this isn't some sort of computer game where you just swap names about. You need some heart and character in a club.

Get him signed up, Sparky. If he goes in the summer, we could be in massive trouble next season, especially if the rest of the clear-out doesn't go ahead as planned.

I don't think he's quite at the same level that has shown throughout his time here but even if we managed to sign a ready made replacement, as well as Bruno, it'd be madness to let him go.

I don't understand it either, he has been and still is a rock at the back for this club and has played a massive part of making us what we are, an established PL club We should do all we can to keep him here and then focus more training time on defense

You do wonder if the reputed ‘match the top earner’ clause in his contract is a sticking point? At his age he would want a minimum of 3 years on the same terms I’d imagine.

The one player in our squad that I would fight tooth and nail to keep is Ryan Shawcross. I don't think people realise quite how good he has been for us. Prior to this season, he was a one man defence for all of Hughes' rain, and was consistently been one of the best centre backs in the country. To be honest, I also think that he's the better of our two current centre backs.
If he is allowed to go, that alone should be enough justification to totally clear out the entire management and transfer team.
Not that he will go, of course.

A lot of people saying he's not the same player since his injury. I think there have been signs this last couple of months he's recovering that form. It would be stupidity of the highest order to sell Ryan as he wouldn't generate a high transfer fee anyway. He has been the absolute bedrock of Stoke these past 8 years and when he does leave for whatever reason the club will be poorer for it.

Significant that you use the words 'how good he HAS BEEN'; 'WAS a one man defence'; 'WAS consistently one of the best' - that is where I agree with you. However, every player comes to a season where he is NOT the player he was. Against Liverpool, it was his lack of pace and reaction that was evident. I also think a lot of his now needing to 'manhandle' players is a sign that he can't anticipate and react as quickly as before. We all have a lot of time for Ryan and his constribution to our history but the passage of time is the one thing none of us can fight.

I don't much like the business of football and I'm not too keen on some of the comments I've read.
Some players are more than just commodities. This guy has been with us man and boy. He is stitched into the fabric of this amazing last 10 years of SCFC. Like Denis Smith, I can't imagine him playing for anybody else.
With lots of changes going on it would seem madness to even consider selling Ryan. We need his calm authority and presence, his toughness and determination and no team would want to lose still one of the best and most consistent players in his position in the country.
Ryan will be 30 early next season and when you look at Ferdinand and Terry playing into their mid thirties I believe if we look after that back, he could be a regular first team starter for the next 5 seasons.

Every player has a price including Ryan That's true but for a player entering the last year of his deal with an attractive offer elsewhere, often his price is significantly lower than his value. There's not going to be a bidding war.

Was pondering Ryan earlier today. If we did get a new continental type hot-shot manager in, would he want the whole "Shawcross package?"
Perhaps there is a managerial earthquake about to erupt from the boardroom....and this is warning tremor? Sorry for the crappy geophysical metaphors.

No I think it's just the usual Stoke like behind the scenes incompetence and a journo putting 2 and 2 together.

I don't think Coates would let him go anyway he tends to looks after players who are loyal to the club and himself.

More importantly, how many of our core players will even want to stay if Hughes keeps his job.
They aren't daft, they can see the omnishambles Hughes has created.

Sell him and use the money to sign harry Maguire, job done. Bruno is now our no1 centre half, make him captain too. Bruno isn't our player.

I don't really see how you can reconcile with the idea that he wants to buy new players to replace 'old' players that were brought in to reshape the squad. It's a pretty big admission of failure.

Probably because we assume there is nothing to worry about regarding any possibility of him leaving so we're relaxed about the situation. Can't see a move to Newcastle being of any interest to him. I wouldn't bet on that . At this stage in his career a long term deal on big wages will be of interest to any player . Newcastle have deep pockets Add to that how pissed off he was with supporters not too long ago

Bruno may not be with us next season (hope he is). No Shawcross and no Bruno plus possible interest in Shaq and Arnie ?
Could be a total collapse and into the downward spiral.
The high paid executives need to get a grip.
