Imbula is a problem.
Since he came most of the play goes through him.
So when he is on it we tend to take points. Since he arrived he is more often not on it, ambling around, losing possession, not tackling or making any effort. When that has happened we have looked a shambles in midfield and taken several heavy beatings. Our overall form has dipped since his arrival. Whelan has also entered a steep decline.
Hughes is in a real tight spot and needs to find a couple of inspired signings to sort out the defence and midfield with the likes of Shawx and Pieters declining quickly and Johnson having fitness issues. I am very concerned about the squad.
Re Imbula - when he is playing shit Hughes needs to start telling him he is getting ten more minutes and will be taken off if he doesn't show something

Everyone including me was very enthusiastic about Imbula when he first signed because he looked great going forward. Unfortunately, he has a significant weakness: he dwells on the ball too long and gets nipped from behind. I recall the Punch-and-Judy comments or his English isn't good enough to understand "he's behind you" last season. It's pretty obvious that all the other teams have figured this out. Not sure what the answer is, sadly.

At some point, an awkward question is going to have to be asked about Imbula. There are three midfield roles in our team: the disciplined defensive midfielder, the dynamic player who covers every blade of grass on the pitch and the playmaker. If we are to fill in those roles one by one, Whelan goes straight in as the disciplined defensive midfielder because he's the only player we've got who actually goes that job. I think Imbula was brought in for the dynamic role formerly filled by N'Zonzi, but on the strength of his performance today, you'd have to say that Allen is a perfect fit for it. I can't look past Bojan as our best attacking midfield option. Where exactly that leaves our record signing, I don't know, but at present he doesn't appear to fit into our first team anywhere. Then you have to consider that great big voids keep opening up in the middle of the pitch, that our defence still somehow gets hopelessly exposed and that our midfield doesn't seem to create much at present. It's a bit worrying. Very eloquently put, MD. For me Imbula is great in games where we expect to be the more dominant team. When he has time and space he looks unstoppable. However in situations where we need to roll our sleeves up he often appears to be found wanting. The problem is we know he is a good footballer so it's hard to consider leaving him out. For me it would be either him or Whelan in the team depending on the opposition which I wouldn't have a problem with. He's a bit of a puzzle. All of the bits and pieces are there, but they aren't fitting together properly, somehow. He's so strong and powerful when he has the ball at his feet, but he's incredibly soft when he doesn't have the ball and I don't think I've seen him win a header yet. When he's good, he's got a lot of incredibly good attributes, but when he's bad, he really stinks the place out. The Kitson comparison above is a bit apt, because he reminded me of Kitson's performance away at Chelsea when he went on to leak a load of stuff to the Guardian. I don't know where we can go with him. I suppose getting him to learn English and just constantly working on his off the ball work rate is all we can do.

He doesn't seem to understand basic positioning, closing off spaces, cutting out angles, when to press the opponent. There is no clear role in midfield for him. I think its a headache.

A very expensive self inflicted headache at that.
