I guess it's what people think is acceptable.
I don't feel I need to get lagered up before watching Stoke and just like to go to watch the lads and get behind them. I don't feel I need to get pissed to do that. Not once in over 300 games have I ever been involved in trouble.
I see why people like to have a few jars before a game but cant see why people want to get absolutely smashed and get involved in this pack mentality where they start throwing glasses and chairs and trying to provoke fights.
I've seen enough footage from Marseille to see that our "fans" have played there part in the trouble and are not victims of what's been going on.
It's such a shame that we seem to be going back to the bad old days of the 80's.

But like you I've never been involved in trouble or even wanted to kick, punch, throw a bottle at etc etc an opposing fan. And I'll never understand those that do. Wankers.

I guess it all depends on the effect it has on you. There's a lot of guys like yourself who can sink a few and can have a good laugh and sing song without getting aggressive and wanting a fight and be good company. Then there's the ones who want to fight everyone and start mouthing off and having no respect for people who just want to enjoy the game. There's lads who can turn from being sound to absolute animals and other who just enhance there general already aggressive manner. You cant blame the drink if you no what it does to you.

I for one am outraged. OUTRAGED.
Like that time when I organised that whip around for the Donny pub that was smashed to bits and had all its pool tables set on fire and trophies thrown through the windows.
Look how moral I am. Please praise me.

Like others I know and have heard from people out there, while by no means saying all our fans are blameless there is a lot of inaccurate reporting going on about has happened/ is happening there according to them, so before condemning them all let's wait and see what comes out in the wash !

Cannon fodder for the media - a bunch of chanting pint-pot throwers and barmies.
Hardly a proper chap amongst them. They'll be throwing white plastic garden chairs on Saturday night.

The BBC reporting that England fans have clashed with the police. Funny that, was listening to Adrian Durham live on Talksport saying that the police only reacted after a bunch of locals came out and were looking for it with the England fans.
Of course you'll only see what the media want you to see.
Back in 98 at the World Cup a mate of mine was offered money by a gutter press hack to chuck a few bottles down the street at the locals to get it to kick off so they could get a good front page job!
Make of that what you will.....

Can't help feeling that the organisers could have given more thought to the venue of England v Russia...In a muslim stronghold, both countries have been targets of muslim fanatics in the recent past, it just reeks of incompetence, or is there a more sinister reason to hold it there...

Russian fans notoriously racist. Both hated by the authorities. Both hate Muslims. Lets put them in Marseille, France's largest Muslim populated city. Let the English, Russians and Muslims have a right old punch up... Keeps it away from all the " nice" parts of France where people would be horrified. Dunno....Just seemed they knew it would inevitably kick off...

I heard Durham on TS earlier, there were 15 Russian fans in Marseille attracting attention. I suspect it's largely a media storm. With a few extra piss heads on the streets thrown into the mix. I wouldn't be so flippant if I was in amongst it. Deal with them with a good kebab and a taxi wom. {Cheaper than tear gas.} Headline writers are getting flexed. Be great to go over there and put an emphatic full stop on stuff. Kick fuck out of Europe, grab the Trophy and then retreat back into our own little island. Post Euro, Euros and whatnot. Victorious for Liz. A Parthian Shot. But then agin I'm more Welsh than owt.

Just remembering those leeds fans who got stabbed in Turkey, one murdered. A local mob was whipped up by the media to give them a story.
This smacks of the same. A mob was sent down to do some damage to England fans. Riot police ready to tear gas England fans. England fans drunk and angry. Typical fucking England fans ....blah blah blah

I'm with Tony on this one, like a great many on this thread. I've been quick to condemn in the past, however can see with my own eyes on this occasion, what an embarrassing set of low-life degenerates these dickheads are. Don't be fooled by the 'media put us up to it' bullshit, as even when under the influence of alcohol you are still able to make choices about how you react and what you do. They clearly made the stupid choice! And as for the ones throwing tables and chairs up into the air, hope you see yourselves on TV and realise how truly pathetic you look.

Typical fucking England fans ....blah blah blah It's possible but I get the impression we don't need much egging on and this sort of behaviour isn't just saved for football. Look at the Derby last week and the many case of Brits abroad in Magaluf etc. Its this mentality of drinking ourselves silly and sod the consequences. It is definitely a minority but that minority can do a lot of damage as Millwall, Liverpool and West Ham "fans" showed when there clubs were let down recently. Trying to justify it by blaming police, press or locals is just papering over the cracks, Of course there are always exceptions but it's a national problem. I'm pretty sure when we get knocked out there will be huge numbers fighting in the pubs over here. I don't even think half of them are football supporters they're just people who become very nationalistic every 2 years and look on it as a good excuse to cause mayhem some even think it's cool because they've seen it on the TV. The London riots were a perfect example of people using an incident to cause as much trouble as they could destroying family businesses. Did they really care about Mark Duggan who was apparently the catalyst. They just looked on it as a window of opportunity.

Hmm. one England fan arrested so far. The police confirm no damage to property.
Its just a bunch of drunk fans congregating together. If that was happening in this country it would be dispersed with no fuss.
What males the story is a load of french police just standing in front of them with riot shields then charging them and using tear gas. Its ridiculous. If the police don't want the trouble they could easily split up the support and shutdown a couple ofbars and even make arrests.
They are not doing that. They fucking want trouble, the media are in on it as well. Its all a joke and always has been. The england fans standing around and singing are just drunk and thick, letting themselves be subjected to it

At first when I was watching footage of a bloke screaming at opposition fans before hurling a bottle in their direction it seemed he was shouting "F**k off you frog c***ts." Having brushed up on my lip-reading and watched it again I can confirm he was actually shouting "Get out of the way guys. I'm about to throw a bottle but I really don't want to hurt anybody. I just got given £100 to chuck it by some horrible little tabloid hack. They're the real bad guys. Not decent football fans like me who are just here for a drink, a sing song and some harmless fun. Oh, and if you don't mind could I have my bottle back please, there was some beer left! Thanks lads."

If they arrested 30-40 for criminal damage, public order etc and were left with little numbers on the street because they were all in stations dealing with our lot who's left to deal with a large scale terrorist attack?

I agree we have a binge drinking culture and in football a macho culture and trouble arises when the two mix. But we are by no means unique. So do many of the other large European nations. Your reference to the london riots isn't relevant here but that was about disenfranchisement, not having a stake in society, sheer anger, similar to the riots in the 80's. This what we have here is nowhere near as dangerous. Just drunk boys who could easily be dealt with. But there haa been only one arrest. ONE ARREST. unarmed drunk england fans and only one arrest? Its painfully transparent. They fucking want the story. The police want the action. Those pubs will be open today again. The police will just be standing outside with tear gas ready loving it. The thick england fans will go down there ahain etc..
