Not read much of this because I've been out in France. I didn't go to Marseille and gladly so, however, there was also trouble in Lyon, it went largely unreported. I didn't believe it before I came out, but I do now, it's near on impossible to judge where the trouble will be and avoid it. So for someone to avoid going to a match because of the violence isn't stupid at all. You could be drinking anywhere with England fans and get set upon. We were drinking in Lyon on Sunday night, the atmosphere was good, Germans, Albanians, Romanians all having a good time singing with England fans since the mid afternoon, around 6ish I remember seeing 20 masked guys approaching the cluster of bars we were drinking at, literally seconds later bottles were flying everywhere. I have cuts up my leg and saw one guy get carried away with his face covered in blood. I never set out looking for trouble and I had hoped it didn't come along, unfortunately it did and there was nothing I could've done to avoid it, other than stay in a hotel room and get a taxi to the game, which makes coming out here pointless.. The police out here don't seem to care about england fans getting attacked, they stood on and watched for a while before intervening once it had already sorted itself out. The ultras aren't scared, it was 20 of them tooled up versus around 500 english, they were quickly chased away but it didn't stop them trying. They're not targeting specific English hooligans, they're targeting any English. That being said it is the only trouble we have come across and the atmosphere everywhere else has been nothing short of incredible. Dan my youngest lad went out and was in Lens, Lille , St Etienne amongst other places and having been worried about 8 lads and the trouble I quote this response from him on the phone " I've not seen one punch dad" So it can be done or he and his mate must be the luckiest fans in France. I'm not saying it's impossible to avoid the trouble mate, I'm saying it's impossible to predict where it may happen. I didn't go looking for it, neither did any other of the 500 or so England fans there, we were simply having a great time. Your son and his mates obviously made a decision where they wanted to drink that evening, they could've so easily chosen the same place I decided to go, and they'd have seen the trouble. On the flip side the ultras may have decided to attack another bar where english fans were. It's not impossible to avoid, it's impossible to judge. That's what will put some people off, they don't want to risk it.

Yeah we're gutted but an experience we'll never forget. Not going to go to Nice, selling the Wales tickets and heading home on Friday. May go to Saint Denis for the quarters SHOULD we win the R16. Good lads look after yourself and like i say if you fancy a knock on Thursday evenings Kia has my number you just let me know. Top stuff mate

I was confused mate I read your quoted post as it being impossible to avoid trouble which is how it reads but it's good to hear good news rather than the bad experience news which is what we have been fed by the press.

The BBC had a cameraman walking round the square chatting to people but when things got a bit lively in the sense of singing he'd turn up sharpish just in case he may snap some tasty footage. He also seemed more intent on speaking about brexit and how it would affect football. There was a massive police presence but in all fairness you'd never know they were there.

squeeky, anyone who considers giving up a match ticket in the euros just because of the possibility of trouble is in my humble opinion "a pussy". sips my coffee Ray I never said I'd consider giving up my ticket and in fact got back yesterday and we had an amazing time and didn't see any trouble what so ever, I'm 6ft 1" tall and although never have been looking for trouble I used box in my younger days and can have a go at defending myself but I want to feel safe in what should be an enjoyable festival of football and enjoyment and not want the worry of being set up by a small army of well trained assailants intent on smashing my head in and then not intent on beating me still want then to use my head as a football which could kill me or disable for the rest of my life ruining mine my wife's and teenage son's life? I don't think so! "i coulda been a contender"
