Shaqiri has seriously missed the company of a certain defender on the right hand side.

he came in fairly late to us, as in missed pre season, so hopefully a good break, a good pre season, run the rule over him and play him in a role he is best suited to and lets see what the lad can do...Same for Imbula, and to a degree Bojan, as he missed pre season, I am the eternal optimist, and I think them 3 can form a formidable partnership....lets see...This is a massive pre season for us, in as much as we have never had such high valued players before...Gooooaaarrrrnnnn Hughes...Earn your crust...

In my opinion it is well written but the suggestion that he has been disappointing is a little harsh. When he has played he has looked industrious and creative with some delightful touches. He can beat a man and seems to have worked hard on getting to the byline and clipping it across with his right. Opponents often doubling up on him. He would possibly have a few more assists were it not for Stoke lacking finishers, and possibly a couple more goals if he had a more central role. I don't know many Stoke fans who expected double figures from him in terms of goalscoring and taking into account injuries and general poor team performances I don't think it was a disappointing first season at all. Industrious? I'd go as far to say that he's one of the laziest players I've seen. He often makes Paul Stewart look busy. If he's delivering with the ball, that doesn't really matter but when he isn't, and he frequently hasn't, it does matter. At least I would say he is one of the worst 'right backs' I've seen!

Like I said on a previous thread about Shaqiri HES NOT A BLOODY WINGER. Its fine starting him on the right but we should move him about during a game. Let him drift into the middle and pick out runners. Swap him with arnie for 20 minutes. Get the right-back on the overlap to cross the ball in. Our build up play is sooooo slow and predictable that by the time the ball reaches Shaqiri theres 2 players on him and he has no chance. He hasnt played particularly well this season but I think he has some right to be pissed off with his teammates and how slowly they get the ball to him and expect him to beat the left-back and a packed defence every time. Hes better in a fast paced game when hes running onto the ball, but he always gets it standing still on the touchline and is basically fucked for options. Couldn't agree more, he's no winger in the strict definition of the term (see Townsend. A, Lennon A and Chamberlain M) better deployed in a roving role as he does internationally.

Yes on reflection maybe industrious is a bit wide of the mark, but he does keep prying and he does cause problems. He's got pretty much no defensive instincts and his game is more about what he does on the ball. I do think that his overall workrate depends almost entirely on the amount of attacking possession we have, and when we are under the cosh then he sees less of the ball. I believe there are many things to consider before calling him lazy.

Of course we need to keep him, but we must find a way to get the best out of him, in terms of keeping him fit and playing him in the right position. I am still not convinced he is a winger in English football. He seems unprepared to track back and does not get to the bye-line and whip balls in. He is surely better as a floating attacker, going where he thinks he can hurt the opposition most - however, this sounds just like Bojan's modus operandi!!!
Do we sign a winger (ie Townsend or Redmond) and have Bojan and Shaq job share? Can we afford both "floating" - not really unless Bojan is deemed the striker and Shaq the number 10 behind him, which would be the shortest forward line since David Speedie and Wee Jimmy Krankie played up front together in an Irn Bru Charity Match. Hughes' determination to sign a striker also suggests this is not on the cards.
How about 4-3-2-1, the good ole Xmas tree? If Arnie really does leave, Bojan and Shaq could be the two, behind a new striker, with Whelan (or replacement), Imbula and one other (ideally, if not crocked, Afellay) as the middle three. Width may be an issue unless we get new and improved, bombing on, Spurs style full backs. I'd suggest the other midfielder would have to be someone of the highest quality as that middle three would have their work cut out defensively.

If he could work out, or someone could tell him, what he is supposed to be doing then we might be on a winner. As it stands he just looks a bit confused most games.

Keep. He's underperforming but so is the whole squad. The work that needs to be done doesn't involve ditching what we have, but getting more out of them. The potential was evident earlier in the season, the recent dire run hasn't changed that. You are absolutely spot on. Surely he has underperformed and should be kept because he's a great talent and it's not easy to stay consistent when one is constantly injured, and therefore not in any kind of decent match-day form. And I also agree that ditching isn't the way we should progress - besides there are 3-4 players that definitely should fear getting the boot before Shaq

But then again he was given a chance, even after twatting his Captain. Great player none the less. H Its all irrelevant because fuller was a great player for us, as you acknowledge. Shaqiri isn't a great player for us. Truth is he's been desperately disappointing and must improve next season if he is to avoid "expensive flop" status. I keep seeing comparisons to Arnie mentioned. For me Arnie showed a whole lot more than shaqiri has done in his first season with us. Shaqiri is nowhere near as good as Arnie. Arnie has two good feet, he's quick and he's strong and he's effective in the wide position he was bought to play in. Shaqiri is as one footed as it gets, isn't particularly quick, is lightweight and has people talking about whether he can play the role he has been signed for.

He won't be sold.......he hasn't performed well enough for us this season to attract any interest big enough to interest the club. The only way his stock could rise high enough is if he has a massive euros. The question asked by the op is likely to be theoretical only, I'd say

He's a good player and sometimes he gives me the impression that he's trying too hard if anything. I don't think he's had a bad season but I think people are expecting too much of him. He could quite easily rack up a decent goals tally if the set up is right and he gains a bit of confidence.

For me it's a case of flashes of brilliance interspersed with long periods of anonymity. No one has been able to get the best out of him at the club level. He's averaged 5 goals a game at Basel and Bayern Munich and only 9 a game for us and iNter Milan. The question is, can Sparky and his staff get the best out of him? I hope so.

However, the last two months left a bad taste in most people's mouths and has many wondering which Stoke is going to show up in August. yeah i totally understand that and i was as pissed off as everyone else with how we performed in those last games. the issue for me is that the main reason that people were AS pissed off as they were was because of the very decent position we found ourselves in because of the previous 8-9 months and (as DaveF mentioned) it's exactly those players that people on here want to "fuck off" out of the club that got us into that decent position in the first place. it seems that many have completely ignored the vast majority of the season (where even when we weren't playing great football we were still picking up regular points) and have concentrated purely on the last few results
