Another day completely dominated by England, only blemish in my opinion is the bizarre decision by Cook to not enforce the follow on, just don't understand the reasoning behind it.

another good day for England, I too was puzzled by not making Pakistan bat again but I guess the captain had his reasons[by the looks of it he changed his mind at the last minute?]hope we skittle. them out today than mr cook can show two fingers to his detractors.

surprised at the low attendance today? the eccb need to look at their pricing structure, and how they go about refunds when we have 3 day tests?

Ben Duckett on 214no for the Lions in a 50 over game, following up a 180+ in an earlier game can see him being fast tracked into the full squad.

Ok - a bit of a lull after the excellent 2nd test, so let's Thanks Sri Lanka for providing some fun... Beating Australia in an epic test. Well done to them. Frankly, well done to anyone who beats Australia in the cricket!

Still way too many question marks in the batting order for this to be considered a top class side.

297 may prove to be a decent score. Seems like Pakistan are as inconsistent as us. I think we look weaker without Stokes and not just for batting. Never been sold on Finn but I hope to be proven wrong.

Never been sold on Finn but I hope to be proven wrong. It may well be, particularly if the conditions are favourable first thing. However, not convinced Hales is an opener, Vince averaging 20, is Ballance any sort of long term option. Moeen is essential down the order but is he preventing a batter spinner getting a game because of frailties further up? We're a good side but a long way off being a great side as was bandied about earlier in the Summer.

I do really like Hales and want him to succeed but it's just not working is it. Vince I can see a decent future. For me I'd play Rashid down the order. It's weird because it seems no matter how good England are or how in form they are we never seem to get the better of Pakistan.

As much as a like Hales and want him to succeed, I think it may be time to give Roy a go. I know limited overs is a different game but you can't ignore someone that is scoring the number of runs he is scoring for England and his county.
I'd like to see Buttler back in the side before long too.
Dury is out in Vince at the moment, and Ballance I do think has got what it takes, but he needs to prove it consistently and soon.

The new regime displaying a similar fault to previous ones namley - it may be tough to get picked to play for England but it's harder to get dropped. Our bowling attack is effectively three right arm quicks because Finn and Ali are not up to the job. That selection stubbornness is being exposed today. Respect to the Pakistan batsmen though - they've played excellent test cricket today. They're in an excellent position to now bat England out of the game.

So not having Stokes available to bowl on a wicket that's doing little has nothing to do with only getting 3 wickets in a day?.. okay.

Can't drop catches on a pitch like that, Anderson and Broad bowled too short with the first new ball. Didn't see Finn bowl and Ali is what he is a part time spinner, Vince is under big pressure second innings if he can't get past 50 I think he's done for, can see Ali being pushed up and Rashid coming in, the problem is he is no Swann either he'll pick up a few wickets but can he tie an end down ? If they do go with Rashid they need to stick with him for a couple of years unless he performs terribly. Hales needs to start putting some scores in too.

Stokes has 60 wickets in 25 tests so apart from another option he probably wouldn't have made much of a difference, interestingly his stats for both batting and bowling are marginally better (about 3 runs in each) than Mo Ali's, yet Stokes is an automatic pick with no mention of his place being under pressure.

Can you drop Ali with the question marks hanging over the upper batting order? Maybe push him up the order to 5. But what happened to the much lauded No Fear cricket we were supposed to play. Picking your no.1 spinner on the basis of his batting capability reeks of fear.

I think the thing is when Stokes is good he is very very good. He wins matches. The problem with averages they don't give an indication of impact. Your point is well made though - his wicket taking record doesn't make his omission vital. The bigger problem is picking a 4th seamer who has been well off the boil all summer and expecting him to turn it on. More hope than expectation to put it mildly. Combine that with having a part time offie our bowling problems are fairly clear - they are one of selection.

Gung Ho has seemingly been given the heave ho.

Combine that with having a part time offie our bowling problems are fairly clear - they are one of selection. Stokes is a talent no doubt as a minimum his averages should be the other way round, his batting has to become more consistent for him to stay at No 6. Don't disagree with the rest but I would stick with Finn, read an interesting article a few weeks back saying England were a bit stuffed on selection as neither Cook or Bayliss see much county cricket to know what is out there, Farbrace gets out and about but with talk of scrapping the selection panel they need to look at this. I do wonder if Moores should have a job spotting talent, coaching at international level is not his thing but Broad, Anderson, Root and many more were all given their chances under him.

Great fightback from the England batsmen in the 2nd innings leaving us with a 311 lead going into day 5. Hopefully Cook declares over night and gives us a whole day to try and force a victory which seemed highly unlikely at the start of day 3.

Hopefully Cook declares over night and gives us a whole day to try and force a victory which seemed highly unlikely at the start of day 3. You just know Cook won't declare until he's sure Pakistan can't win, I expect we'll come out and bat for about 10 overs this morning. It will be our downfall as Paikstan knowing they can't win will just sit in and see the see the day out, on what is still a pretty flat wicket. We'd be much better off putting them straight in this morning, giving them a sniff of victory, it'll be much easier taking wickets with them trying to chase down our total.

It's a pity we can't find a test frontline spinner, you could then move Ali up the order to replace Vince or Ballance, then just be used has a 2nd. Spinner instead of our frontline spinner.
