Cricket, lovely cricket, at Lord's where I saw it.... Summer is nearly upon us as you can tell by the snow, hail, bitterly cold winds and overnight frost. I'm personally looking forward to the summer's cricket and in just 20 days time red ball cricket played in white's resumes for our national side. It seems forever since we last dabbled in the greatest form of the game. So through my own excitement I would like to attempt to declare this thread as the 100% unofficial summer cricket thread. Here's what's happening for the England team... Thursday 19th May1st Test vs Sri Lanka: Headingley (England won by an innings and 88 runs) Friday 27th May2nd Test vs Sri Lanka: The Riverside (England won by 9 wickets) Thursday 9th June3rd Test vs Sri Lanka: Lord's (Match Drawn) Tuesday 21st June1st ODI vs Sri Lanka: Trent Bridge (Match Tied) Friday 24th June2nd ODI vs Sri Lanka: Edgbaston (England won by 10 wickets) Sunday 26th June3rd ODI vs Sri Lanka: Bristol (Match Abandoned - No Result) Wednesday 29th June4th ODI vs Sri Lanka: The Oval (England won by 6 wickets) Saturday 2nd July5th ODI vs Sri Lanka: Cardiff (England won by 122 runs) Tuesday 5th JulyTwenty20 vs Sri Lanka: Hampshire (England won by 8 wickets) Thursday 14th July1st Test vs Pakistan: Lord's (Pakistan won by 75 runs) Friday 22nd July2nd Test vs Pakistan: Old Trafford (England won by 330 runs) Wednesday 3rd August3rd Test vs Pakistan: Edgbaston (England won by 141 runs) Thursday 11th August4th Test vs Pakistan: The Oval (Pakistan won by 10 wickets) Wednesday 24th August1st ODI vs Pakistan: Hampshire (England won by 44 runs (DLS)) Saturday 27th August2nd ODI vs Pakistan: Lord's (England won by 4 wickets) Tuesday 30th August3rd ODI vs Pakistan: Trent Bridge (England won by 169 runs) Thursday 1st September4th ODI vs Pakistan: Headingley (England won by 4 wickets) Sunday 4th September5th ODI vs Pakistan: Cardiff (10:30am) Wednesday 7th SeptemberTwenty20 vs Pakistan: Old Trafford (6:30pm) I didn't get where I am today without tickling one through the on side and scampering through for a quick single.

Cricket lovely cricket. I'll be at the Headingley test against Sri Lanka and the Pakistan test at Old Trafford. Keen to tick the Riverside off my list as it's the only test venue I've not done but the thought off a disrupted days play for wind and rain keeps putting me off......

I was at Lords yesterday. I had some spare time before taking the train back to Glasgow so did an early morning your and watched a bit of the cricket taking place. My first time at the home of cricket. It's an impressive place. Thoroughly recommend the tour - which includes a walk through the Long Room.

Nice to see Root and Bairstow in good form. Root completing his double hundred this morning after Bairstow got dismissed just short of his (198). Cook also in good nick so things coming together for next week's opening test against Sri Lanka.
But what should our line up be. I would like to see Bairstow at 5 which would leave space for us to bring in Rashid. Assuming Hales is a stick on, the only questions are who bats at 3 and who is the third seamer.
This is what I'd go for;
Cook Hayles Vince Root Bairstow Stokes Ali Rashid Broad Anderson Finn

I think Hales will get this test / series but Browne and Robson are both in form so he needs to start performing. I think Ballance will play on his home ground instead of Rashid and depending on conditions Ball might be in for Finn who has not been bowling too well by all accounts

They won't do it don't get me wrong but that's the team I'd go for as well......

Vince seems likely to get a call up. I'd like to see Butler back with the gloves, but that won't happen while he's away at the IPL.

Likewise Bairstow is easily good enough to play at 5. The selection I'm suggesting offers plenty of depth in batting as well as giving an extra spin option. The more I think of it, the more I like it!

When players are asked to bat at 8/9 they bat with a different mindset than further up the order when they play like proper batsmen, Stokes, Ali and Rashid is a fantastic lower middle order/tail.....

Against Sri Lanka i'd be amazed if it's not 4 quicks, i'm honestly trying to remember when we last played 2 spinners at home, can't remember if Swann played in the game Kerrigan made his debut. Not sure how many players they have to come from the IPL but a fairly weak Essex side were well on their way to beating them if England play anything like could be a few 3 or 4 day tests coming.

My "magic" line up has 4 quicks! Whether Finn makes the cut or someone lose comes in, I'm unsure. And relaxed. I'll go with your earlier suggestion.

Sorry if I wasn't clear, I get what you and partick are saying but I just don't see games getting to Day 5 (and maybe even Day 4) for England to consider picking 6 bowlers, yes against a really tough opponent it would no doubt be useful but Sri Lanka look pretty weak, Pakistan you never know which team will turn up. It's a big year for Rashid if he is going to force his way into the team it's going to be at the expense of Mo.

Anyone think Bell will get a recall? or deserves one?.. I personally think we shouldn't go back but I have sneaky feeling he might get a phone call.

Michael Vaughan has offered up two possible sides today on twitter, with option 2 being his preferred choice:-
Team 1 Cook Hales Vince Root Stokes Bairstow Ali Rashid Broad Finn Anderson
Team 2 Cook Robson Hales Root Vince Stokes Bairstow Ali Broad Finn Anderson
Make of those what you will.

I seriously doubt Ali and Rashid will be in the same team on English wickets, ever, tbh. As for Hales at 3, is that really a possibility? can't see it myself.

Squad announcement is 7am tomorrow morning will be a 12 man squad so almost certainly no Rashid
Interestingly Notts have recalled Fletcher from loan at Derby so a pretty big clue Ball is in the squad

Compton stays in, Vince and Ball called up.

Compton dodges the bullet bit of a surprise there, Ball or Finn is the decision with Vince to bat 5? Think you've got it right. I expect Finn to keep his place. For the same reason Compton made the cut. The selectors place a huge emphasis on continuity of selection. It's been said before; it's hard to get selected for England, but it seems to be harder to then get dropped.

Sri Lankans have been given real games by Essex and Leicestershire and look an absolute shadow of the side that won here two years ago. That said they have some half decent players still. In 2014 we didn't deal with Angelo Mathews well at all, and he dominated us as a result, he's a world class player and needs to be treated as such. Aside from that they have Rangana Herath, a canny orthodox bowler, who won't be anywhere near as intimidating as he is at home, but is still capable of causing some issues. Dinesh Chandimal looks like he's finally maturing and will be a threat. Whilst Dushmantha Chameera has some wheels on him, he's young and learning his trade, and attacking their young seam attack should be a priority.
No Sangakkara, no Jayawardene, Sri Lanka struggling to deal with their loss, home conditions and a fully rested bowling attack we should win 2 or 3 nil....but cricket's never that easy....

I'm in Leeds today and it's been overcast with a bit of drizzle here and there all day. If it's like this tomorrow put them in to bat and we could have them bowled out by lunchtime. Sri Lanka are in transition and look seriously there for the taking.....
