Yasir Shah has our number - ripped through our batting today.
This could be a long series - some of our selections will come under scrutiny. Specifically Ballance, certainly Finn but the success of the leggy has to make our decision not to play ours in favour of a part time offie who flatters to deceive with the bat.
I don think we've picked our best team for this match.

Middle order looked dodgy on paper .....and it hasn't disappointed. Balance has had his chance and should have had to score stacks of runs in the CC before he was considered again. Borthwick deserved a go.

I don think we've picked our best team for this match. Shah has bowled well but he hasn't had to work hard for his wickets, some very poor technique on show from our Batsmen today. Ballance, Vince, Ali and Finn can all count themselves very lucky to be in the side at the moment. The Ballance recall really was a head scratcher, he's not pulled up any trees since going back to county cricket and he looks way out of his depth playing international cricket. How long are Butler and Stokes out for?

The tail mopped up quickly leaving us chasing 283 for victory. Judging by how poorly we played Shah in the first innings I doubt we'll do it but we've at least given ourselves a chance by bowling them out cheaply in the 2nd innings. Special mention for Woakes, fantastic bowling.

Good "test" for us.
Should be well within the capability of this batting line up but...
Let's see.

Taking a leaf out of the football teams manual, Hales all the ability in the world but just can't seem you have the mentality for test cricket always seems to want to score and Root 2 poor shots in two innings should be better from the vice captain.
Having said that didn't realise Pakistan are 3rd in icc test rankings with us 4th, although not many win against them in the UAE where Pakistan play their home games now.

Lunch has come at the wrong time I feel. Pakistan had started to spread the field and Vince was getting into a nice rythem.. something I fear he could lose.

Whatever happened to batsmen who could grind out an innings when required??

Hopefully this test will be the wake up call we need. Too many of our batsmen think they can just walk out and take on any attack in any condition, seems most have forgotten the art of digging in and grinding out a session or two if needed.
This Pakistan attack is nothing special, most of our batsmen have got themselves out through poor shot selection.

I'm sure broad used be able to knock it around a bit, finn out for jimmy for 2nd test, woakes done plenty enough to retain his place

But he's a #11 bat these days. Any quick bowler worth his salt will do for him. Full and straight and he's on his way.

This No Fear brand of cricket seems to come apart when we have a half decent leggie against us. Add to that an opener who is rather susceptible to left arm over, our top batsman catching a dose of "Bellitis" and an uncertain middle order finding their way (let's be kind!), we have a struggle ahead in this series. Good. It will tell us plenty about the quality and resilience of our team.
Next test will see Finn out for sure - hopefully for Jimmy and I'd switch Ali for Rashid.

Stokes, Anderson & Rashid all added to the squad for the 2nd test. I think there expecting Old Trafford to spin a bit so they will probably pick both Ali and Rashid (God only knows why we've prepared a spinning wicket to face the best spinner in the world) I hope they don't though, Ali isn't a frontline spinner and deserves dropping solely for that shot in the 2nd innings. Vince must be on his last chance as well, wouldn't be surprised if he's dropped for Stokes and Rashid & Jimmy come in for Finn and Ball.

I think Ali will miss out and we will go with our standard 4 seam + 1 spin bowling attack. Finn and Ball making way as you say. Ali's continued selection has only been because there was no other spinner pushing hard for a place and his batting (in theory) helped strengthen the lower order. Well his bowling has been mince and his batting not much better - yet another of those "flatter to deceive" types. Rashid can bowl and he can bat - so he must take priority over Ali.

Oh - and a plea to Mr Root.
Please don't turn into Ian Bell - one century in 22 innings is pish for someone of your quality. You need to step up to the plate.

Only managed to watch the highlights, but it seemed like England wanted to get it finished in 4 days and have an extra day off, instead of concentrating on just winning the damn Test match.
Anyone think there is a place for 2 all rounders in Woakes and Stokes (Nice sounding double partnership) in the same side?

The selectors do it seems as they have released Finn and Ball so guess its Ali / Rashid / Vince / Ballance competing for three places, I have a funny feeling they might pick Ali and Rashid espicially with Stokes and Anderson both coming back from injury.

They'll bottle the spinner selection and go with just Ali meaning Rashid misses out. Our selectors are ever so conservative.

We're underway - and as expected Anderson and Stokes return and Rashid misses out.
Also missing out is Hayles. Looked about as convincing as Broad - could have been out LBW, should have been out caught then failed to cope with a full pitched in swinger; displaying the same quality of footwork as the aforementioned Broad.
This Pakistan bowling attack is very good. It's going to be a far better test of our batting than Sri Lanka provided.
Now time for Root to stop pissing around with his Ian Bell-esque cameos and post a decent score. Go for it Joe.

Excellent performance by Root and Cook with some good support from some players. At 57-4 Pakistan are already in deep trouble. Hopefully we can continue tomorrow and bowl them out cheaply and then have a real good go when they follow on.

Been out and about today so only just picked up the score - great to see Root deliver. I reckon he was more pissed than anyone else about his recent scores. The way he applied himself yesterday suggests he was. Today it looks like he enjoyed himself. Big shout out also to the man of the summer - Woakes. Superb.

You would think if we can skittle out the last 6 wickets it could be all over by the end of play tommorow.

Another excellent day for England - up until we bowled Pakistan out just shy of 200.
Then Cook chooses to bat again rather than enforce the follow on.
Absolute nonsense decision.
Cook is a great batsman - no doubt. But as a captain he is poor.
