This subject seems to have gone a bit quiet so I thought I'd provide a little trivia to distract from our poor start to the season. I see that Sir Bradley Wiggins is in the news for taking steroids. Actually there are two types of steroids: anabolic steroids are all derivatives of testosterone and are used by the body to build muscle. Cortico-steroids are all derivatives of cortisone and are used by the body to counteract inflammation. Many asthma inhalers contain cortico-steroids, such as triancinolone and have only weak anabolic activity. So this is basically a bullshit story. I know very little about steroids however several retired cyclists who have injected triamcinolone say it is a very powerful drug. linkBut other experts as well as many cyclists, including convicted dopers David Millar and Michael Rasmussen, claim it is an extremely potent drug. " Rasmussen had been just four stages away from winning the Tour de France in 2007 when he was thrown out of the race for avoiding doping controls. He later blew the whistle on his own doping and the doping culture within the sport at that time. He told BBC Newsnight: "There is no doubt in my mind that corticosteroids [are] very, very strong and performance enhancing.
"It would postpone this sensation fatigue, increase your recovery speed and most importantly and quite easily I would drop one or two kg which is very important when you want to climb mountains.
"It will drain the body from all excess fat in a quite short period of time. It's a very fast and very effective drug in that sense."

The problem is the press is after anything on this subject they can get their hands on even if it's complete nonsense. Even the BBC is putting out rubbish without checking the facts.

" linkThe problem with trying to abuse corticosteroids is you can't use them for very long because they inhibit the adrenal glands, which produce natural cortisone. This, in turn causes fluid retention and you will swell up like a balloon. When you stop, the withdrawal symptoms are nasty.

The BBC reference was I saw the news on Wiggins a few minutes ago. Unfortunately, there is very little hard science on this subject and most information out there is anecdotal. Very few people have vested interests in doing the studies properly. There was a recent, double-blind clinical study published in a reputable peer-reviewed journal that shows that the benefits of drugs like EPO are mostly psychological. I can it dig up the reference up if anyone is interested.

I've only just seen this thread and haven't read through all the information kustokie has kindly provided but I don't have a hard stance on PEDs. It's not a subject I know too much about but there are too many grey areas for me to feel truly outraged, I like things to be black and white. Take for example the list of banned substances, this is a list that changes and where I believe it's a constant game of cat and mouse between the labs and the athletes. With this I'm guessing an athlete can be legal one week and then illegal the next (this was taken from a podcast with Dominic D'Agostino, although I may have paraphrased it to change its meaning). Secondly, we're only unhappy about athletes using synthetic enhancers where the natural enhancements such as beetroot juice are ok? The final thing that makes me uneasy is the difficulty in measuring the use of these substances is tricky, I've often heard the quote 'traces' and 'legal limits' which makes me think we're measuring the results of a substance rather the substance itself which has its own set of problems.
To nail my colours to the mast I will always feel sorry for Alain Baxter and wouldn't want to villan-ise athletes for similar misdemeanors but I'm yet to be convinced we have a clear definition of a drugs cheat just yet. I understand we have a list of banned substances but the two don't meet but I'm happy to be persuaded.
