I'd been looking for this thread, it jogged my memory because I wanted to ask if anyone had heard the new Megadeth song - Nightstalkers featuring Ice-T It's a fantastic song. Dave sounds the best he's sounded in about 15 years, and the fury the band plays with is unrelenting. They have an amazing guitarist in Kiko (former Angra), drummer in Dirk and bassist in Lomenzo who has been just about everywhere (including Megadeth for 2 albums - United Abominations and Endgame). Definitely get on it because so far it's shaping up to be best album since Rust in Peace I think, and that's extremely high praise because I still think RiP is the best thrash album of all time.
And if you're after something heavier, then you have to listen to Liminal Rite by Kardashev. A genre called Deathgaze, the album combines fantastic clean vocals, great screams and spoken monologues. It's one of the best albums I've had the pleasure of listening to. I've also spoken to the lead singer online and he's a really great guy and has a clear passion for making this genre something special.
On another note, I notice the OP was trentvale68. Never interacted with him much on the board, but he had some good fucking taste in metal music (and anyone who likes Fleshgod Apocalypse is 10/10 in my books). You're still with us all every step of the way mate I'm sure.

I've heard the new song and it's good and they were excellent at Download , really sharp . I listen to all sorts, new Shinedown is good as.is the reunited Porcupine Tree album . Less interested in metal as get older , I flit between genres but hoping to get to Stonedead fest with Schenker at end if August and hopefully Anthrax in Brum plus a few Shinedown in November. Gigs getting to be more of a luxury item these days sadly

Wow, I like Megadeth but that song has just killed me, it's fucking awful. I had to switch it off at two & half minutes in as I couldn't take anymore of it. I really hope it was just an awful, awful recording of it 'cos I can best describe it as sounding like the house next door was playing some kick ass metal music in the background, but I was stuck with some loudmouth talking to me, not just talking but sounding really uninterested in what he was talking about & boring the fuck out of me, while throughout I was just wishing he'd shut up so I could hear the great music coming from next door.

I've never been high on Anthrax.
I generally thought they were the weaker of the self proclaimed 'big 4'. That's not to say they don't have some good tracks of course. I think an argument could made to replace them with a band such as Testament. But I think opinion is going vary so much on the topic as it has done (so I'm told) since the 80s.
Some gigs are turning into silly money for tickets. It's why I didn't go to see Slipknot when We Are Not Your Kind came out. I wasn't prepared to pay such good money for the worst seat in the house. On the opposite end, I went a show in April with Decapitated headlining, with Signs of the Swarm and Harbinger supporting. £22 for 3 bands all with long set lists.

One thing they have fucked up on with both singles so far is there is evident audio clipping. They're trying to make the songs as loud as possible. Which worries me because I'll be getting the vinyl pressing and I hope it's not going to be a basic digital transfer with no proper EQ done to it.
I think Dave is always going to be an acquired taste vocally, especially these past 10 years or so where he's had definite decline, and I'll always have accept his lyrics are sometimes cringy at best and diabolical at worst (Amerikhastan springs to mind).

I was lucky enough to see the big 4 from relatively early , Anthrax opening for Metallica in 86 and slayer were the one that left me cold. I did love Testament and indeed Exodus too. I have a mate I've met at gigs for 20+ years , both Maiden and Motorhead fan club members which is how we met and have a mutual "encouragement" thing going . Neither of f us fancied Download massively but the social aspect triumphed and while a bloody expensive day, Shinedown Megadeth Mastodon and Maiden were worth it. Some utter shit on as well, I still revert to mindset of the single day Monsters of Rock was a preferred option. I go to what I go to really. Next week we're at a West End musical and the Euros final, then Stranglers the week after then I'm quiet til Stonedead. Can't afford them all and sadly missed Blaze Bayley and the very good Absolva lats night in Cannock for ££ reasons

Slipknot dropped a new single on Thursday, it took a few listens to get my head around it but its really catchy - the chorus almost like one of those random Finnish Eurovision entries - a great tune!
Fairly sure the skin mask at the start and end being 'retired' is a tribute to Joey as thats similar to his very first mask

I'll give it a listen albeit not a massive Slipknot fan, told they're good live obviously. I don't enjoy the big festivals as much, too much filler and I tend to use having a headliner I don't like that much as a banker to get off site easily ! I did like Solway Firth by SK though . Singers solo stuff is more to my taste really

Have a look on YouTube for some of their live performances, they really are epic
One of the most viewed is Spit It Out at Download 2009, Coreys crowd control is something else
Lots of epic Iowa era stuff out there, inc the full version of their Disasterpieces gig at Londons O2 in 2002, and there are full shows of their Download headliner gigs from 2009 and 2019 to watch
One of my favourite bands, all that aggression is ace to run/workout to :-)

New discovery, the formidable GEL from New Jersey... visceral.. big fan of their attendant delegation from the ministry of silly walks... Bit heavier than gel, but you should give Spiritbox and iwrestledabearonce a go (if you haven't already of course) The guitarist and singer are the same for both, I think iwrestledabearonce was the better band though.

Not my usual cup of tea but they really do have incredible energy and as you say Corey Taylor is a fantastic frontman, done some excellent stuff with Stone Sour also

Cheers for the pointers, I checked iwrestledabearonce partly because I thought you may have been winding me up. I've youtube a few tracks, gave them a fair crack, still not sure to make of them, crazy, eclectic.. but a bit disjointed and gimmicky for me.. I just love the feral blast of GEL.. my tastes veer more towards the punk than metallurgy though.. Thanks though, always enjoy listening to something new.

Wanting to bring this thread back up It's been over a year since the last post, certainly for me there's been a plethora of excellent releases in the world of Deathcore, Slam and Tech Death. Extermination Dismemberment made the best slam album of the year, Signs of the Swarm released a great follow-up to Absolvere, Lorna Shore released Pain Remains, Mental Cruelty with Zweilicht, Crown Magnetar with Everything Bleeds and so many others. If I fancy something a tad lighter, I love listening to Higher Place by Malevolence, it's like their 'Sound of Silence' moment on their latest album that came out last year, Malicious Intent. Definitely recommend a listen.

- The video gives good context to what the song is about. Best listened with a good quality pair of headphones.
- If you want something that is just a little bit mad, can't go wrong with Orphan.
- One of the best symphonic blackened deathcore releases ever

It's a bit wanky but did you read Will Ramos' storyline about how the Pain Remains (the album not the song) is all about a single lucid dream? Breakdowns, grinding riffs and pig squeals aren't typically my thing so not sure where this Lorna Shore love came from. Cursed to Die was my gateway, the opening half melody just felt more accessible.

I like melodic stuff, a couple of things I Spotify played me recently.
Swansong, finnish folksy melodeath I guess?
Miara, Gothenburg as fuck even though they're from Bologna.

- The video gives good context to what the song is about. Best listened with a good quality pair of headphones. Listened to this the other day & found it nothing special. (Although I wasn't really having a 'music night', and I also 'watched the video' which I hate doing - Why do you want to dilute your senses like that, music is always so much better just listening, rather than watching) Anyroad, tonight, which was a half-arsed 'music night' I gave it another go (This time without watching the video!) Still didn't really find it anything more than an average song... But... I've decided to add it to my "Random Ace Tunes" playlist so it can pop-up in the future & I can give it a few more listens. ... Where are my fucking Starlink satellites?!?!?!

I might get slapped for this one having spent years dropping nothing but Ozzy, Metallica, Suicidal Tendencies etc.
So I watched a documentary on Woodstock 99. Limp Bizkit were obviously the headline act and this was their big moment.
Like them or not... That performance is unbelievable. Durst literally has the crowd in the palm of his hand. When the song kicks in after the middle section, it's unbelievable. The middle section up to that point where it's just building and building, you won't see many bands who are able to build up a crowd to the point of explosion but fucking hell, they really did. It's like a crescendo.
I wouldn't pay to see them now, but I think I would have enjoyed being in that crowd.

Chocolate Starfish is peak nu metal to me. Yeah it's corny, the lyrics are nonsense most of the time, but the music is as catchy as they come. And they must've been doing something right to be used at Wrestlemania and The Undertakers entrance music.

Not my scene, but a mate from school (now RIP) was big into D.R.I, WASP, Anthrax, and Slayer.
It was a bit much for me, I was into Adam & The Ants around that time 🤣 He shared his music with us though, cracking lad.

I'm among other things a 70ies rock guy myself, bands like Bachman-Turner-Overdrive, Black Sabbath, Nazareth and more. Hard rock so to say. Bands in the beginning, before what later in the genre became known as heavy metal.
Three album suggestions, if someone has missed
Bachman-Turner-Overdrive "Not fragile" Black Sabbath "Sabotage" Nazareth "Razamanaz"
