Thought as the prog one is doing well, we should have one for the 'eavier stuff
Anything goes from hard rock right up to death metal, industrial & the heavier end of punk and all inbetween
Any recommendations, youtube vids, well known or obscure; if they rock, lets have them!
Few of my current fav to start the ball

Did anyone see the Ritchie Blackmore Story on the other night (think it was either BBC4 or Sky Arts)
Really good and worth getting on catch up; think I need to check up on some of the old Deep Purple, wasn't so keen on Rainbow mind
He's doing some really uncommercial but very interesting medieval style music now with his missus (who looks like a Swedish porn star) who has got a great voice

Bit like Ozzy; average musically by himself but always attracted top talent around him
You might like this fella if you like Malmsteen/shredders
Also this; ignore the cheesy cover, its like Alice Cooper or WASP but much faster with real shredding guitar solos and heaps of double bass drumming. Its pure metal mayhem and sadly virtually unknown!
This may well be the definitive heavy metal album if in its purest form

Ozzy had a string of top musicians. Bob Daisley, Randy Rhoads, Tommy Aldridge, Jake E Lee, Randy Castillo, Don airey etc. Up until Zakk Wylde joined you'd be hard pressed to find a band with better musicians. Maybe Megadeth.
Painkiller is still one of the greatest metal albums of all time and people forget it came at a time when the heavy metal press had all but written off Judas Priest.

Vinnie Moore: Lifeforce, magical track.
Got to be Maiden and Metallica for me,conservative choices I know, but indisputable quality.
Sabbath knew how to turn out a riff to summon Beelzebub too.
For pure Guitar work i loved Tony Macalpine's first two albums.Insane that he's only keyboardist in Vai's touring band.

I think the early Metallica stuff is great. Anything after the black album is dog shit.

I think Ride The Lightning was voted greatest metal album ever in Kerrang?
As much as I love Master Of Puppets and it is lauded by many as their best , I think Lightning is at least as good.
They really are the worlds most idle band though aren't they LOL. 8 years nearly since the last studio album and no guarantee that they will get the new one out this year. There was 5 bloody years between the last album and the one before it too!
Metallica vs Maiden is a tough one; I think Maiden may not have hit the heights of Metallica, neither have they plumbed the depths either so in some ways Id take Maiden over them
I always hated the And Justice For All album, mainly due to production issues but this has got me really into it, its remixed so you can hear the bass (think you can use Guitar Hero to do this) It is Jason Newsted's original basslines as well
Enjoy!

Skid Row were better than they looked, looked like a wank glam metal band but they had a pretty heavy sound.
Im not a fan of shit like Jovi or Poison but I did like Motley Crue; best gig to date Ive seen by anyone was Dec 89 at the NEC. They were tight as fuck and a lot heavier live
This was off the same tour

Great album! Love the solo on Mass Hypnosis
Went off them when they went all 'jungle' but I still have a soft spot for Roots & Ratmahhata
Ill raise you this from around the same time..
Robb Flynn (of Machinehead) on guitar for Vio-lence. Fucking ace band from the Bay Area along with these
saw Testament at Viccy Hall in 1987 - fuckin 29 years ago nearly, feels like yesterday. They were supporting Anthrax. Saw Anthrax live twice and both times were good but on record, I never fully took to them. Too jokey somehow

He still had the sweet licks and tasteful phrasing. There's some good stuff, performed in magical settings on YouTube but many Purple/Rainbow traditionalists seem not to like it.

Just checked, mate. Its on Sky Arts on catch up tv. Well worth it, especially for you as a big fan
Really didn't realise there was still such animosity between Blackmore & Gillan; feel a bit sorry for Gillan in that you probably cant help it if your voice packs in, can you?

This really is epic stuff, deserves to be better known

Thanks mate I will see about that .....In light of their entry into the Rock Hall of fame you would have thought Gillan could have buried the hatchet for one night ? Without Ritchie Blackmore there would have been no Deep Purple , David Coverdale never saw eye to eye with Blackmore either, but following the death of Jon Lord they decided to put thirty years of bad feeling behind them and make up ( well almost make up ) .

They were tight as fuck and a lot heavier live This was off the same tour Skid Row imo are one of the biggest tragedies of heavy metal. They had the potential to be one of the greatest heavy metal bands ever. You had probably the most gifted vocalist of his generation, two shit hot guitarists who wrote memorable riffs for fun, a great drummer and a bassist who wrote most of the songs. Very few bands have put out a debut album and follow up as good as they did. There's not a bad track on either. I've always felt it was too much too quickly. They were multi platinum artists at about 23. If they could have kept it together people would be talking about Skid Row in the same breath as Judas Priest. Once Subhuman Race came out it was all too late; they'd missed the boat. They were never the same band after Bach left. He had a huge impact on their sound, not just vocally but musically. They are a true example of unscrupulous management and how in fighting can totally destroy a good thing. There's also all that stuff with Bon Jovi. How much of its true, I really don't know. I've read several versions but whether its more of a legend than truth is anyone's guess.

If one song defined heavy metal, it would be Overkill!!
Pretty good band of the same name too
Love how upfront the bass is and how clicky the bass drum sounds

Totally agree on Skid Row. I think partly what happened was they were way too heavy for the glam crowd and their image, particularly Bach put off the thrashers too, so they fell inbetween two stools
great vocalist though
These were his best two vocal performances for me
A great example ala Metallica's Fade To Black of how a ballad doesn't have to be soppy

Never really considered that side of things but then I quite like glam metal and I also like thrash. For me, Skid Row were simply a great heavy metal band, and not really categorised. I think the real issues with Skid Row were obviously the dreadful management by the record label and managers but also perhaps their own demons. The irony is of course that Skid Row wrote songs that were lyrically negative about drugs (Like wasted time) and alcohol yet they were all at it, Bach in particular, who was a heavy alcoholic and it showed in his actions (fighting all the time etc). Did that contribute to their downfall? Possibly. If all the Bon Jovi stories are true then that contributed too but some of them are so farfetched (Like BJ conspiring with the record label to delay releases etc) that it gets hard to actually work out what went down.

Thought Kings X's:Out Of The Silent Planet was a really strong album with intelligent muscianship. Not heard much of the later stuff.
Megadeth were good, albeit patchy.

My favourite metal album
My favourite tune of theirs though is
Armenian Folk music fuses so well with metal.
My favourite Maiden tune is probably Hallowed be thy name, but is there a better introduction to metal than this
