He is 21! Isn't it time that this "if it isn't Ryan in an England shirt, they are shit defenders" mentality was put aside. John Stones has all the potential to be an absolute gem for England for years to come. Good defenders mature into the role and Stones will eradicate the silly stuff particularly when he inevitably joins a top club and plays regular Champions League and the rest of it. He already has all the rest. It's absolutely nothing to do with Ryan. Nothing. Long since given up on Ryan playing for England under Hodgson, and anyway, Ryan has been a long way from playing as well as he can. John Stones has potential - but it's just that - potential. If you're going to pick players for England based on potential then why not go the whole hog and pick a few from the England school boys set-up? Why hasn't he eradicated some of the silly stuff already? We're talking basics here. You're taught at primary school not to try and dribble past forwards when you're the last man. If he's going to turn into the defender that some predict, then the Euros is not the place to learn. What do you think will happen if Stones does one of his regular cock ups - that knocks us out at say the semi-final stage? The media, and the fans will turn on him big time (just think Rob Green @ the South Africa World Cup). Is that really going to help Stone's progression?

I am hoping the Euros and a big stage will help him to do exactly what you say, clear lines and defend properly when necessary but when in space and time use his ability to carry the ball and make incisive passes forward.

He looks a hell of a lot better playing for England than Everton and I suspect that is due to not having Martinez telling him to do the exact opposite of what a defender should do.
When he puts his priority in getting the ball away from the goal, instead of trying to pick a clever pass - he looks to be outstanding.

What was his excuse in the Holland game?

The only game that I have seen him look even half decent in has been against Australia, and they were a very poor side. Even then he made one or two fairly basic errors. Against one of the better nations in the Euros I think his shortcomings will be displayed for all to see. Having said that I don't think it's just Stones, I think the whole group of defenders that Woy has selected will be the weak part of the team.

I don't blame the player, I blame his manager. Surely Martinez will be gone by the end of the season and no other club will employ him. He does cause most of his own problems though. He got lucky against australia with a back pass to the keeper. He didn't look, played the ball back and nearly gave the ball straight to an aussie player who would have been one and one with the keeper. I just think he's thick, phil jones the same.
