I know some will struggle with the concept of the question as they believe all music is shit these days and nothing decent has been released since 1996 but I'll have a go anyway.

I dont think Barry Gibb or Paul McCartney have much to fear in the earnings league table even if you lumped the whole lot together and multiplied their combined total by 50 ....

You've got me mate, I have not heard of a single one of your 'artists' It's the whole 'thing' about being 'cool' nowadays. You have to convince yourself that you like some shit bands who no-one has ever heard of 'cos they're shit, but you tell everyone how they're mint & it's criminal they aren't better known..... Should one of these shit bands ever actually become better known you have to say they've 'soldout' & go & find yourself some new shit band no-one has ever heard of so you can carry on being Mr.Cool.

These "shit bands" are known to people who still listen to music. I'd say the list is fairly mainstream in relation to sales/chart positions, awards/nominations, the festival circuit and radio plays. If you don't listen to current music anymore you won't have heard of them it's that simple.

Hinterland, Currents both great albums. I'd also include 'What went Down' by foals as well. Some incredible stuff on it. New Orders latest is the best album they've done in years as well.

No longer in the loop and don't bother with any music magazines or owt, but I still keep an ear out for interesting new stuff. Largely from others' recommendations so I appreciate such lists. Some good stuff mentioned, havn't heard all of the picks. This week I've been given Gaz Coombes {Supergrass} solo album, and a new release by Deerhunter to road test. The jury is out. Funny how folk go into denial, or strike out when they feel threatened by summat new. If music be the food of love, play on etc. The musical landscape is ever changing, there's a much wider choice with access to the internot and whatnot these days. Far less concentration on a few 'big' artists that the major labels deign to release and promote. Off top of me head, stuff I've enjoyed on record [and live} over the last five years. {By no means definitive, or date-accurate.}: The Growlers - Gilded Pleasures. Unhinged Peyote fuelled surf music. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Letting Go. Soaring country/folk with Will Oldham's disquietining vocal delivery. The Oh Sees - Help. Sounds like vintage '60's psychedelic West Coast Garage with a modern twist. A marvellous commotion. Courtney Barnett - Sometimes I sit. Brilliant mini Oz new wave soap operas inspired by Nirvana, Patti Smith and such. Packed with cracking hooks. The Young Knives - Sick Octave. Punky prog rock, if there is such a thing. Damon Albarn - Everyday Robots. Often end up cherry picking tracks from albums, but this hangs together as a musical journey {into Albarn's yoof}. Strong stuff from start to finish with Eno collaborating too. Tinariwen - Imidiwan/Companions. The Blues, but not as we know them. Exotic rock, great for cooking flatbreads and smoking Camels to. Best seen live. Matthew E. White - Fresh Blood. Strange brew of soft rock and soul, with hints of Roxy Music and all sorts. Sunken Foal - Fallen Arches. Strangely organic electronica on Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu records. Guy Garvey - Courting the Squall. Strong stuff from the Elbow man. 'Juggernaut' is a top tune. Hannah Peel - The Broken Wave. Folky and soothing. Beautiful. The naysayers should be sentenced to a week of listening to 6music. Dear Hannah.... A bit of rough with the smooth. Barking.

Some brill stuff there. Names to conjour with. Food for thought. Hadn't registered that PJ had released a new 'un. Big fan of whatever Midlake I've heard {'Young Bride' is a fave.} Havn't heard mention of Gravenhurst for a while, didn't know he was still releasing I'll search for that too, really liked his first album. A mate's obsessed with Drone racing and was showing me a video, raving about a Woodkid tune on it. Struck me as very Smiths-like. {Don't know if you remember Raymonde, the only band to try and copy the Smiths, sounded a bit like them on first hearing. Or Gene..}? I bought the Aliens album for a quid because of links to the Beta Band, I've never really taken to it, I might dig it out and try again.
