This is our problem in our defence - we keep leaking through the back door and getting shafted. The defence needs to come out in a united straight line, however until this happens the back four being gay is costing us. On a serious note, does anybody give a toss anymore. I hate the words "Coming Out" this suggests that somebody has something awful to hide that the world has the right to know about. Peoples sexuality has f^ck all to with anybody other than the individual themself. Having said that I never realised there was so many benders on this board. Did you not know that there is a separate board for you: Theonlygayoatcakeinthevillage.com

You'd like to think the reaction would be little more than 'oh right' if someone did come out.
Having said that I will never be mature enough to be watching Sunday Supplement and not think that Martin Samuel has the gayest jumper ever made on.

It's high time a Premier League footballer came out as gay. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet but I do believe the majority of fans would be supportive.

Lets say it was one of your friends. For instance i have a friend named Calvin Wigg and he has a friend named Tony who people and Calvin suspect may play for the other team so to speak. Calvin thinks it may be rubbish the rumour but calvins father is adamant that he may like as calvin father says " the sausage" . Calvin should stay a loyal friend shouldn't he? If any rumours come true

It would be a beautiful thing if the first footballer to 'come out' was at 'neanderthal' Stoke and was shown full support by the whole of the club and fanbase.
I doubt it's the supporters stopping it but rather potential sponsors.

I doubt it's the supporters stopping it but rather potential sponsors. I heard that male Hollywood A-listers suffer from similar circumstances. They're afraid or not allowed to say they're gay as it'd jeopardise there careers. If it's true then it's bang out of order. Sexuality is not something that you should have to hide.

Would it bother anybody if any of our squad 'came out'? Would you treat them differently on the pitch? Surely there are some current squad players who are gay. If so, who I wonder? & for the record, I couldn't give a monkeys if they were gay or straight. Why would any of our squad be gay , is there a ratio that indicates out of twenty five one at least must be gay ?

Likelihood is that one out of a group of 25 possibly is yeah. I agree though, the first out player playing for Stoke would be superb.

The only thing that should matter is what they do on the pitch for us, coming out shouldn't even be a thing but sadly even in this day and age there would be certain individuals who would take offence at one of our players being homosexual. I would love a player to come out while they are still playing, whether it be for us or another team, because I think the reaction from fans would be overall positive and more awareness and acceptance can only be a good thing for the game. I understand why players don't come out while they are still playing - or haven't yet. Being transgender myself I know all too well the fears of coming out to family and friends - let alone the thought of doing it in the public eye. I'm glad to say that those I go to watch Stoke with are supportive of me even though for now I am still presenting as male. Stoke themselves have been very supportive, I had a meeting with them last month - dealing with or supporting LGBT fans, players or staff is a very new area for the club and it's something they are looking to improve to raise awareness, as are the Premier League, Football League and the FA. As of our meeting I was the only openly LGBT supporter the club knew about but we hope there will be more with the hope of possibly setting up an LGBT supporters club at Stoke, quite a few clubs already have these - danilostintransition.blogspot.co.uk/February is also Football vs Homophobia Month of action - www.footballvhomophobia.com/

After the homophobic abuse Declan Rudd (Norwich GK) got from some idiot in the Boothen based solely on the fact he was wearing a pink strip; I can see why gay footballers like to remain in the closet, so to speak.

I think that if you watch what 'some' of our supporters get up to, and how they act, then do the polar opposite, you won't go far wrong.

Yeah I was just going to say basically this. I think unfortunately as much as people think there would be widespread support, that a gay opposing player would be targeted by sections of fans and ridiculed for sure. It's not right but I could see it happening

The problem seems to be that they have to hide the fact.

Depends on the player as far as this board goes. For example Bojan would become a sex symbol but Walters would probably be ridiculed. I suppose it would be equally fair to say that if a player was one of our old school Pulis players you would defend them if they turned out to be a child murderer. What a stupid post.

A few years ago, to her credit, To her credit German Chancellor Andrea Merkel told gay footballers they should have no fear of publicly announcing their homosexuality. As in most nations, no high profile German player has ever ‘come out’. Sadly, Merkel’s words are unlikely to encourage many gay players to open up. An anonymous gay Bundesliga player stated that if he was to come out he’d feel his personal safety could be at risk. Other employers have structures in place to ensure equality in the workplace. Sexuality based prejudice shouldn’t have to be an issue in this day and age. In 2016 this is a very dark stain on football’s character.

It's a shame Stoke City FC aren't on the '2016 Supporters' list I'm not sure that list is fully up to date, Stoke are a supporter of the campaign and have been involved - I know that we had representatives attend an event at the Etihad at the start of the month. We haven't communicated it very well or have been as visible as other clubs have been this month though, sadly. It would be a beautiful thing if the first footballer to 'come out' was at 'neanderthal' Stoke and was shown full support by the whole of the club and fanbase. I doubt it's the supporters stopping it but rather potential sponsors. Why on earth should a gay person feel pressured to "come out"? I've never been able to understand what it's got to do with anyone else! It hasn't got anything to do with anybody else - the only pressure to come out comes from within, to be free to live our lives as we choose without being judged by society and not have to hide who we are from family and friends, it's often the fear of upsetting or losing those family and friends which is is the reason we keep it hidden and why many never come out at all - it shouldn't have to be like that in 2016.

Now this subject takes me back to around 1998 when John Fashanu sadly committed suicide,he was one if not the first professional footballer to come out, anyway I was sitting in a bar having a drink with 70,s legend Geoff Salmons when the story about Fashanu broke and I say to Geoff have Stoke ever had any gay players ? Geoff,s reply... "Give us a kiss and I will tell you" Typical Geoff.

If so, who I wonder? & for the record, I couldn't give a monkeys if they were gay or straight. Not at all and no. Sexual preference is not a choice. It's more a question of politics and inherent morals / beliefs than football. Whilst I'm not naive enough to suggest that homophobia isn't present in today's society and welcome anybody's opinions (however daft I deem them to be), I would hope that the tide is turning on that front and that the vast majority of supporters echo my thoughts.
