Is it only me that thinks the Valencia debacle actually started with the previous game against Besiktas ??
I know we had already qualified out of the group but even a draw in that last group game meant we were seeded for the knockout stages. Pulis leaves all 11 players at home who had started (and beaten) Spurs at home a few days before and takes only 15 players in total. We lose. We get drawn against Valencia, Besiktas get Braga.
Surely no league concerns way back in December!?!

Cost me £500 to watch stoke reserves in valencia, if he had have shown his face in that square before the game, he would have been strung up from that cathedral not the stoke flag

Rob, how do you think Hughes managed his squad resources coming out of the Christmas period into the Liverpool semi-final? I think he probably didn't use them as well as he might've done but can see why he wanted the momentum going. I don't think you can compare that with a 60-game season in which the manager flat-out refused to rest some players while using other expensive options sparingly if at all. Oh no, I'm drawn back in. Not sure why... I remember the argument that Walters was flogged and Fuller didn't get much game time, but other than that I'm not sure who you mean? By expensive options do you mean Palacios? He got 18 starts and 10 off the bench. Jerome got 17 starts and 19 off the bench. Kenwyne 23 starts. There's Arismendi of course...

I'm talking about using Jerome, Jones and Fuller more up front in the league rather than just Walters and Crouch. Some of the money spent that summer in at least one of the windows should have gone on a winger as well.

What is the point in sport and in football then? We haven't much chance of winning the fa cup or league cup either. Should we throw those games as well? Fulham and Middlesbrough both reached the final of the same competition. Anything is possible. I've tried to avoid commenting on this thread but that game was the beginning of the end for pulis. He lost the trust if both the fans and the owner in one night. From having the safest job in football he became a man under pressure. What he did that night was inexcusable. Swansea and Norwich, both at home, with 3 months of the season left, were bigger games than a last 16 europa league game away at Valencia with 7000+ stoke fans in attendance? Says everything you need to know about our previous manager! MH played a mostly second string at Doncaster last week. Had that backfired (these games often do) would he face the same criticism? Did Mark Hughes really need to do that? He did it and took the chance because the league is more important and didn't want to take the chance with key players. We lost Bojan at Rochdale for 9 months in a FA cup tie when really you could question his selection in the first place for that game. Perhaps he's learned a lesson? MH would not have fielded a second 11 at Valencia imo completely different scenario Our 2nd 11 are pretty strong these days, most are international players, so less of a gamble in the early rounds of the cup We're looking forward - would be great to qualify again

I thought Upson's red was a bit soft tbh and we were one up at the time but it's those moments in big games that you'd want your better players on hand. Hey ho.

The crap that TP is getting on this messageboard at the moment is disgusting. The guy built the foundations for Sparky. He should be respected for that and not this endless, pointless debate on his management style and decisions.

Now he deserves respect and thanks.

Are you saying the point is that he was fair game when he was here but now he's gone he isn't? Did none of what he achieved occur to you while he was here? Or were you just pretending?

Surely no league concerns way back in December!?! That's true, and also it must have planted the seed for what was to follow in Valencia. We won away at Wolves after the Besiktas midweek game. The previous two away games in Europe saw us lose 9-0 on aggregate against Bolton and Sunderland. It probably solidified TP's view that European away games definitely harmed us, and that there was a decision to be made (rightly or wrongly) about the cup vs league.

Ranieri rested his key players in the week - and lost in the cup. On 5 live a Leicester fan rang in spitting his dummy out slatting the manager.
What an idiot eh?
