Why? If you are 18 now you were only one year old when we got relegated. It isn't their fault they weren't around when we hit the lows. No Joe, I'm talking about 40-50 year olds, I work with some. As you say new fans are gifted to support Stoke in the golden years. Harsh to hate it though. Personally I think it's good so many people want to watch us play games of football.

Being a proper fan means you follow your local team even through the bad times. Of course this kind of fan tends to tag along with most top sides, for me I don't like it.

after years of supporting stoke through thick n thin,i have decided that this season is my last as a season tkt holder.i hope we get to wembley again this season so i can sign off on a high.the first few seasons in the prem were pure bliss, sadly the reality is now hitting home,i have slowly realised that the stoke i supported as a boy for 40 odd years is now gone forever, this prem bollox is too sanatised ,void of any real connection with the citys working class, too many average johnny foreigners picking up a fat wage from a club they feel nowt for,all seater stadiums where i am obliged to sit among people i would normally avoid outside the ground.i know that its not stokes fault, its just how footy is nowadays, its just not for me. raytupper, signing out Funnily enough, I said sommat similar when we got promoted. Cause we were in the top flight when I started going watch Stoke on me own strength in 1980, I said, that's it, I am leaving them as I found them, but I've now gone & indoctrinated my kids in the curse

I respect your comments but I could NEVER give up watching Stoke, EVER!!!!!! I sit with some knobs at the back of the Boothen but I would still be there every game even if I was sat among prawn sandwich eating Zombies. It's a way of life, Stoke are MY team. I've been going down Stoke since my Dad took me in 1954, and I have the same buzz now as I did then. Yes we've moved on from being ankle deep in piss at the Vic, but we've all moved on. For the first time in a long time I really feel that we are on the brink of being a regular cup winning top class side, but you kno what? I don't give a flying fuck if we're not. I'll still be there, and hopefully for a good few more seasons.

After some of the insipid shit we have tolerated. The Pomo that led to the 84/85 calamity. The Mills/Ball drop. The Cheap Chic fiasco. The Kamara sutra and Brian's Little disaster. The stupid second leg at Walsall.
After such a comprehensive catalogue of wank some decide to jump ship during a golden age. They are entitled to but bloody hell, you know.

Games like yesterday can severely test the resolve - I can take defeat when it's fair and probably deserved, but when you've been cheated by a ref famous for being a twat and an arsehole like Allardyce's antics on the touch line directly contributing to the outcome and the general media bias against us (if I hear the words "Big Sam" again today I will smash something ) - BUT we get over it, take the positives (sometimes hard I know) and go again......
I can't really remember whether it was "better" in years gone by - maybe we were just more stoical and now we are seeing the most successful period in modern times we feel knock backs more acutely.......
The away thing is true though - used to be able to go on spec a lot more easily - now it's like arranging a holiday abroad.....

Losing 4-1 at home to Bristol Rovers in the third tier tests your resolve, not the second away defeat of the season - at the end of November - in the Premier League.

Just checked - 20 of the 24 teams in the Championship were in the top flight at some time in my life-time. Enjoy the ride.

We were talking about this in the pub before the game yesterday. You're actually hankering for your youth, nothing more, nothing less. Do you think the old timers in the 70 or 80's were any different? This bang on. You're hankering for something you're never going to get back, the good old days. I suppose you're also desperate for those six long weeks of the school summer holidays (which actually lasted 6 months) where the sun didn't set let alone go in and Those long cold winters where it snowed every day so you missed school and could go sledging all day and Wagon Wheels were the size of REAL wagon wheels and I think you get my drift. Perhaps you should buy yourself a 20,000cc Chopper motorbike with the money you save from not renewing your ST, grow a Zapata tache, wear a bandana, rename yourself Peter Fonda and go touring across America to really recapture your youth. Or alternatively do what the rest of us do, look back on those sepia tinted days with some fondness but also a lot of horror, get a grip and crack on. this bang on

The only time I'd give up on the game is if Stoke were to fold. During some of our bleak years I've mulled over what I'd do and considered whether going to Newcastle town, or a local Sunday league side. But to be quite honest, if I didn't have Stoke City I'd lose the will to support or follow any team. Which is why I never get people who have a 2nd club, it's not in my blood. I'm Stoke, only Stoke. If there was no Stoke I think I'd be lost, they take up a HUGE part of my life. What would I do on weekends ? What would I think about or discuss with people to fill the void ? Doesn't bear thinking about really. Nah, I'll never hang up my Stoke scarf or stop going to games. I signed up for life, good times & bad. The game and dynamics of the sport may change but Stoke City will always be Stoke City, and they'll always be my true love.

I said it was games like yesterday that really get to some of us (not all its seems) - and not the loss as such. We deserved something out of the game and we we're done over by shit decisions and gamesmanship yet again......I'm sympathising with the OP but encouraging him to stick with it......and yes, I remember the 3rd tier all too well before we get into all that dick measuring crap... Hope that's a bit clearer.....

Been supporting Stke since 63 and don't agree with this at all. We did have a few more local players, but you felt you were personally connected to any of them? Not at all.

I do think it's an age thing. I'm 57 and it isn't what it used to be. I hated the Prem when we weren't in it and probably more now we are. Bar a few lucky Cup draws we aren't going to win owt in my lifetime and that's a bit shit really.
If I had something better to do on Saturdays I've often thought I would do it but as we're all getting older the football is the glue that holds our little band together. One of ours lives in Liverpool so when would we see one another?
So in a way the footie becomes more important as it's the glue that holds us together and even though we or probably I mean me, can't hold our ale like we once did we keep trying as evidenced by our forthcoming Saturday night in that London after West Ham.
Conclusion? Beer.

The game and dynamics of the sport may change but Stoke City will always be Stoke City, and they'll always be my true love. Yup, that sums it up. I rarely watch other teams games, even on the telly, not really bothered apart from a bit of interest if an ex-Stokie's playing. I used to get asked all the time by my mate to go and watch Pompey when I lived there, rarely bothered apart from the times I went free in the executive bit, even then I only really went for the free booze :) People who support Stoke and live in the area don't realise how lucky they are to be able to chat about Stoke day in day out and the people they're talking to actually being interested! I work 12 hour shifts with one bloke who detests football and another bloke who's a Newcastle fan but showed little interest in football or Newcastle for the first 3 years I worked with him, went a few games with his two lads last season and has, bizarrely, bought a season ticket for him and his kids this season! He's no more interested in Stoke than I am in Newcastle tho' :)

It's the only thing that keeps me sane.Damon Albarn summed it up for me when he was talking about Kurt Cobains death,he reckoned if he had a footy team to follow he wouldn't have topped himself......a bit glib I know, but I get what he means.

Stoke was a better place then, everyone had a job, albeit a shitty hard one, and the football was a blokes way of letting off steam at the end of the week. But the world has changed, I wish I was young again but it aint gonna happen. These days lots of women and people who have never even been to Stoke support us and I for one don't think that's a bad thing. I remember when it was wall to wall cloth caps but the world has changed. We can still watch the game, go to the pub and see mates. In the end that's what it's all about. Better for worse, a football club is for life, not just for when you're young

Very sad opening post, with which I sympathise as I am some years into retirement and have fond memories of the old days.
If you have fallen out of love for the game then that is life, but I would suggest a trial separation, and not to burn your boats.
Personally I have been quite refreshed by the characters of Muniesa and Bojan and I think there are a number of other players who are very decent guys like Ryan, Walters, and Crouch. I am impressed by the integrity of Peter Coates. It's great to have our club in the hands of a Potteries' family. The prices being held and free travel are evidence of a club that cares about you.
Despite driving to Sunderland, walking through the rain, and watching a very lame display I could not stop being a Stokie. Some of the players came over to applaud us and I respect that; they didn't have to do it and it would have been easier for them to slink off after a defeat.
The decision is yours all I can say is that I have stopped doing a number of things in my life and have invariably regretted it, with the exception of smoking.

I am really looking forward to Tuesday's match because it's not a premiership match,we will have the Sheffield Wed fans telling us we are shit then finding themselves 3 down and the real Stoke fans finding there voices ,not the sterile prem fans that only turn up because they have a season ticket.

I started watching Stoke in 1960 when I lived in Stone. Remember Stan coming back and promotion in 1963. The 60's and 70's were great times to follow the Potters. Having left the area for uni I still came back for my 2 week fix for many years until family commitments and long distance away from the Potteries meant my attendance became almost non existent for many years. However I returned to the fold as a season ticket holder 10 years ago and am enjoying this bed golden age more than ever. Be loyal, be proud, be Stoke!

I've found it hard to post anything after watching , arguably the worst game I've ever had to endure at home on my TV.
The two most biased full of shit commentators I've ever heard.
The worst sending off decision in history (predicted by me before the game)
The bearded cheating, diving little shit that claims to be a man playing for them.
Left me feeling ,not for the first time football in the UK is just one big FIX of a TV show like a sporting X Factor.
