I find myself agreeing with Albert here Sheiky. When teams afford us space, we move forward with confidence and create plenty of chances (sadly we miss most of them). When teams set out to 'shut us out' our creative players seem to lack the belief in themselves that they can beat their man and create scoring opportunities for themselves or others. Regardless of the opposition's tactics, I think we have the players that are capable of creating and scoring goals but some some of them 'disappear' when it gets tougher. That's not a massive criticism of individuals because they are all very good players and have (largely) played very well but I really do think it's a confidence issue with some of them. These same players are fully capable of taking on their opponnents, beating them and creating/scoring but the creators have got to have the courage and belief to do that and the front man/men have to be much more confident/clinical in finding the back of the net in games where we have created a whole host of chances. With the creative players we have in the current set up, it's hard to argue that a change of personnel would make us more creative (IMO). I just think we need to be a bit more positive and move forward with a bit more purpose rather than taking 15 passes (9 or 10 of them backwards) to try and engineer chances. We've already got the players that can rectify the situation (IMO). Agree to a degree mate but how long do you give them to click? I think the situation has been going on long enough now to suggest it needs a genuine kick up the arse or new ideas. I just doubt our tactics or formation will change anytime soon mate. We had the very same problem last season against the 'lesser lights' that set out to stop us. As you implied yourself, it's hard to see replacing one or two individuals making a huge difference. We already have plenty of creativity (in theory) on the pitch. It's not so much a huge 'tactical' change that we need but a change of emphasis in moving forward with a bit more positivity, attacking defenders head on, rather than stopping and looking backwards for support. Shak is much the worst for this at the moment and GJ is actually creating far more than he is but Arnie does the same thing when he gets less space to operate in which is why, in tight games Eric creates more that Arnie does. Both wingers are fine, creative players and they are quite capable of doing it against teams that push up on us and deny us space.....but they are far more hesitant and reluctant to take on their man in these types of games. We really do need to stop playing the inordinate number of sideways/backward passes that we need before we create any form of decent chance in the 'tight' games. It goes without saying that our strikers need to start hitting the back of the net far more often than they do in games where we do create plenty of good chances (and there have been plenty of them).

11 goals in 14 games is a shame, to be honest

11 goals in 14 games is a shame, to be honest It IS mate but I honestly think it's getting completely over-stated since, had we scored just an average percentage of the easy chances we had against the likes of Southampton, the figures wouldn't look too bad at all. We are looking at it as a major problem which, IMO, it's not. Our 'goals against' is excellent but we need to.... a. Start converting more of our opennings into goals and b. Get our 'flair' players performing in games where opponents afford them less space in which to operate. When teams 'push up' on you and close you down quickly, you rely on individual flair and creativity to 'open the door'. It's very difficult to argue that we lack THAT when we have Shaqiri, Arnie and Bojan in the team as well as full backs that are excellent going forward.

The problem with our goals tally is twofold. In the odd game like Southampton, where we can play on the counter we create a reasonable number of chances but have by band large fluffed them. We can improve here by restoring Diouf to the side. Against bus parkers and teams who want to hit us on the counter, we haven’t a clue and at the minute neither does Hughes. Realistically it’s either got to come via a change in the system or entering the transfer market because against these sides, we could have the bastard son of Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler up front and it wouldn't matter because we aren't missing chances, we're just not creating them. I find myself agreeing with Albert here Sheiky. When teams afford us space, we move forward with confidence and create plenty of chances (sadly we miss most of them). It's frustrating as hell how the two wingers keep checking inside /pass back to the two full backs when we are up against a well drilled defensive set up,but maybe it's because, apart from a static and heavily marked Walters, there is no one else in the box.Bojan is good at ghosting in there and has scored goals that way.But more often than not there is no one for them to pick out.Maybe things will improve when Mame returns. We certainly need more movement.
