Other notables recently were imbibed during the Castle Blues and Jazz Festival. The Thirsty Giraffe a fairly new addition to the micro pub family in Newcastle but what a little belter! Opposite 10 Green Bottles (which is a nice place if you're out with your Doris) and urban funky. There must be a ale lover with good taste behind the scenes because the choice of drafts and can/bottles is spot on for me. I chose the Wild Brewing Company's Millionaire Stout which is off the chart tasty. Based on millionaire shortbread is rich, caramel-y with a hint of salt and a biscuit after taste. BINGO! Some might find it a shade sweet but for a single pint it's an award winner. It's £4.50 a pint but worth every ha'penny. Wellers, we've been here before, in 'Castle pulled out the stops and put on a band and the cops kindly closed the street so they pulled out the extra tables and chairs for some impromptu alfresco street drinking. Marvellous. They also put on an American IPA Fruity Wealicious with mango at 5.9%. Crikey bobs, stunning. It was £4.90 a pint but if you're thinking that might be too much then don't worry. It's all gone the whole batch drunk dry even at that price. Wellers, have been putting on some special stuff recently, Stay Puft marshmallow porter and an absolute favourite of mine Lupoloid a 6.7% IPA from Beavertown. Juicebox IPA from FourPure Brewery and Blaze of Glory a Double IPA from Shiny Brewery at a whopping 7.4%. Only the one mind to finish a stroll but by 'eck it was tasty.

Mart's Brewhouse and Tap (formerly Club International) should be opening soon on Piccadilly, just down the road from BottleCraft on the opposite side www.facebook.com/martscraftbeer/ Jase, who used to run the Coachmakers, is involved with it I went back in The Unicorn for the first time in a while earlier this year. They had some decent guests on. Also enjoyed the Dutty (Tiny Rebel) in Mellards, Newcastle - especially now they've got some good drinking space outside that catches the sun

I've had some bottles of his. It's good stuff. I don't think he's actually called a Mart. That was his Dad who sadly passed after they started the brew thing together. Could be wrong.

Anyone wanting a tan or a break from shopping in Castle head up the alley to Mellards. Don't forget the sun cream! Interesting you mention Dutty, they've got Tiny Rebels marshmallow porter in now AND Cocoa Cabana American 5.2% chocolate and coconut porter from Blue Bee Brewery, Yorkshire. Both very nice on draft but the Blue Bee is better value. EDIT: Randomly, there are a load of Stokies in there now. Some old faces from the old terraces. Someone's birthday?

Aye up nah.
Mart's Brewhouse and Tap on Piccadilly up 'anley duck. Bi-fold glass doors at the front so open to the pedestrian street. Nice and cool in this heat.
17, yes seventeen hand pumps 😁 A couple of big time Trappist 8% offerings, some craft ciders, 3 proper continental lagers and about 10 beers from marshmallow stout to mandarin IPA.
Much more wine and gin to keep the Doris happy than most micro pubs.
High ceiling's and the ubiquitous upcycled eclectic mis-matched bar stools and tables made of pallets. Trendy.
And..... a micro brewery in the corner!! Mahoosive stainless and wooden vats with pipes and valves everywhere 😀 Mart was around so if you've got any brewing questions don't hesitate.
Recommended if in that neck of the woods.

I was just passing and got roped in somehow I liked the notice in the window not long after - 'please be patient we're trying to organise a piss up in here'. I really hope it's a big success because that would indicate the whole thing is being successful. I think the council should make it easier for businesses to have outside seating areas, I came across their intention to encourage it on the council website but then they're charging them for it An outside seating area culture down there this summer could have been brilliant.

The glorious weather has played havoc with the Elderflower Wellwisher Bitter, taking a while to settle and 'finish'. Going down well as a shandy though, albeit slightly sacrilegious.
Had a couple of months booze free {until the Sweden game}. Enjoyed the 'local' choices of Co-Op bockles: Staffordshire Brewery, even a chilled Titanic Iceberg or two for the event.
Generally switch to ciders in summer. Dependable HRH Weston esq. Vintage 8.2% never fails.

Also some weissbiers when it's really hot out. I know it's "foreign" but needs must when the devil's roasting your dangleberries. Never cider, though. Not drunk any since the night before my interview at Cambridge Uni when the halls I stopped in had a scrumpy promotion on. I was greener than a pint of food-coloured lager on Paddy's day next day + wasn't entirely surprised not to be offered a place at Cambridge. Good job, I suppose. Can't stand Pimms or champagne.

Went to see the Tapestry at the Museum yesterday and ended up on a bit of a 'heritage' tour. Mart's Brew & Tap BottleCraft Hop Inn Greyhound Sanctuary Artisan Tap Old House at Home.
Best drink of the day was a steady Pedigree back in the Brook, second only to a nice cup of tea on returning home.
I've gone against the idea of all this fancy 'craft' for the moment.
West Indies Guiness Porter/Henry Westons' poor man's Black Velvet is nice though.

Beautiful pint of Wincle's 'Full Fat' Milk Stout at the Black Lion Chedd earlier. Not come across that before. An Autumnal warmer. Had their 'Undertaker' before, but most of their output is a little too Citrus for me, the 'Wallaby' and 'Waller' etc., But this dark beaut was spot on.
The Timothy Taylor was sound as well.
Me homebrew Newcastle Brown is a little lacklustre, but on advice I've added a couple of Barley Wines to perk it up. Leave it 'til Holloween nah...

A little bit of research at the Stoke Beer Festival Particularly enjoyed Fixed Wheel Brewery's - Mild Concussion at 5.5%. They said, Toffee and caramel flavours. They were right. The IPA from Seven Brothers brewery Manchester was a refreshing citrus zinger. A half of the RAN Ales (Fenton) Rum and Raisin Stout was like meeting an old friend. Lovely. Mart's Craft Beers - Dutch Letters stout at a whopping 7% was a rich, marzipan-y way to finish. Attachment Deleted

Spacious Attachment DeletedThe massive space was actually quite 'arty' in a surreal way. I enjoyed a couple of hours there. Plenty of local (SoT & Staffs) Breweries. A burger stall, crisp stalls, a few arts 'n crafts stalls. Discounted CAMRA memberships available. £5 entry. I bought a £10 bingo sheet of 'tokens' which the beer servers blobbed out the cash value of your drink. Half's and thirds available. £2 (refundable) to rent a half glass, unless you're missing any glasses from your Potteries Beer Festival collection then you could just take it home. Mine was from the 2015 festival. A whole cider & scrumpy 'corner' with seating and a small stage for the evenings turns. And a 'imported' beers section with the usual Belgian cherry trappiste stuff and Duvel etc. It was warmer when I came outside !!

I went in before the Hugh Cornwell gig, friday night. It wasn't very busy, a good selection of drunks and old faces from up Town 20+ yrs ago amongst the few. An older crowd. Probably about 8 handpulls, half of them stouts/porters. What I tried was well kept and unless I was undercharged on my round the Bass was less than three quid. Well worth a visit. {It's posher than the old Woodman, no jukebox.}
