Built into the side of the castle. Feel of a bottle kiln inside, high conical stone walls above the bar as I recall. Not been for a while. Was a rallying point for crusaders, oldest 'licensed premises' etc. A sup before setting off. Used to like the Piano Bar nearby too. Was a lovely visit again. And a nice statue of Robin Hood nearby to see and read some history. Was on a session copper colour ale. Sorry name escapes me. Made it to my fave The Pit n Pendulum and they only had Hobgoblin Gold on tap winner so was on that. Then at night and again annoyingly I forgotten name we found a great Rock bar. It was a really good pub rock stars on the wall a place you wouldn't take your gran ha ha. Off the ale by this point couple of Hop House 13. I'm no larger drinker but this is good stuff. One of the lads told me a disappointing fact though. He checked after a discussion. The Lymestone Brewery don't do a tour shame really. So how real was Robin Hood?

I like the story of Robin Hood. As much as King Arthur. Ive always said if i could time travel back to any ere. It would be Medieval times. Its sounded very interesting. He robbed the rich to feed the poor excellent. Here is a right question for you chaps and if you give a decent answer i tip my hat. Its seems Buxton Brewery have a few dates to visit them coming up. Very up for this. My question is how do me and my group get there. As we all want to drink obviously going on a tour. Very suprised to find out Buxton has a train station only services from Manchester though. How to get there and back hmmm.

The X18 Buxton flyer bus service is good, from Hanley, not so sure about from Alsager.

I know I might have asked this before but a little crawl around Leek. Which pubs would any of you recommend?
I did a bit of hopping between the Joules one and the Titanic one once. Which others would be worth a visit?

Which others would be worth a visit? Ta. Top of the town... 1.The Earl Grey near the Prem Inn on Ashbourne Road. Real Ale buffs, current Midlands Pub of the year or somesuch. 2.The Fountain on Fountain Street and 3. Blue Mugge {good for food} just around the corner. Into town Derby Street 4.The Cock, Joules 5.The Roebuck Titanic. 6. Cobblers. 7. Den Engles wheat beer. 8.The Beer Dock in the square bottle bar.{not been yet but very good reports}. Bird in Hand and Red Lion in the Market Sq both curios too, if it's a two-dayer.. St.Edwards Street run, 9.The Green Dragon Wetherspoons. 10.The Wilkes Head for the Hartington Flower Power. 11.The Quiet Women Lymestone, nice pub, not impressed with the ale last time in there. But handy for the bus stop home. Plenty to go at.

In the face of the traditional boozer coming under pressure, largely from the greed of the big brewers, it's great to see loads of micro-breweries giving it a go. Went to a mini- 12 pump Beer Festival over the weekend and sampled some goodly quoffs. The pick of the crop: VITAL SPARK- Abv 4.4% Fyne Ales, Achadunnan-Argyll. A rich dark beer that shows a glint of red. The taste is clean and slightly sharp with a hint of blackcurrent. TRUE GRIT- Abv 5% Millstone Brewery, Greater Manchester. A well hopped strong ale with a mellow bitterness with a grapefruit/citrus aroma. DAMSON PORTER- Abv 4.5% Burton Bridge Brewery, Burton-upon-Trent. A superb dark beer blended with a subtle infusion of Damsons, full flavoured and packed with a lingering aftertaste. {According to the blurb.} Oh and Lilley's Crazy Goat Cider weighing in at a respectable 6.8% Abv. Any one got any favourite micro brews or owt to report on this front? It is to be encouraged. No but I do smoke a pipe, have a scruffy beard, wear a kagoule and drive a Prius.

That's a great little pub crawl and definitely worth a go, I try to do it once a month even in that order but miss out Den and wilkes's red lion and the bird as didnt like the ale, all good pubs and most with great ale and it's never too busy on a Saturday afternoon

Having had a rather marvellously cultural day at the Uni, now killing a couple of hours before the African Togu Drummers kick in at the Mitch Mem (as was), doing some research (with Trentvale68 in mind) sampling some early evening stouts and porters.. Guinness in the Ember lounge, cheap enough, standard fayre. Oatmeal Stout in Wethers £2.15 decent but a soulless vacuum of a shithole. Summer wine yorkshire Teleporter £3 in Bottlecraft, lovely drop and nice soundtrack and atmos. Where to next is the question?
Salut and chin chin to the infrequently practised art of lone wolfing.
Aah fuck it, smoke me a kipper...

Visited the Earl Grey in Leek last Satdee, really enjoyed it, proper old style boozer and everyone seemed to be actually talking to one another instead of fucking about on Facebook. Had a pint or two of Faithless which was pretty good, then they ran out so I switched to Reckless, also very palatable. Both my lad and my brother in law were on the lagery type stuff called Guileless and they enjoyed it muchly. We shall return Been to Buxton today and I was impressed by how many pubs were still open in the upper shops area, looks like it could be a good night out up there. Went in a quirky little place called The Buxton Ale stop and had a half of Slap in the Face, not bad but I'd probably try summat else next time.

At street level Hanley is a dog's armpit, seen four serious Spicers just this aft: a man wedged under a phonebox door by TkMax, one moaning in the doorway of the Entertainment shop further up. A bloke lying in front of a taxi outside Hogshead, and a crazy fired up young lady mithering folk and raving outside Wilko's. That's without even going out of me way to find them. Accosted by beggars and fag scroungers on top of that too.
Lift yer eyes to the second stor(e)y and, particularly on Piccadilly/Cheapside the devilment is in the architectural detail.
Surveying the scene with a Belfast Boundary pokey stout 8.2%.... building up to/resisting an 11.2%er.
Seems in Hanley, pub wise there's nowhere else particular to go.

African drumming called off.
Bar 41, run by Scott from Malt&Hops (Fwnton), next the Regent was quiet but nice. Bristol Milk Stout a lovely drop.
Back to Bottlecraft for the 11.2% Black Block.
The bus station to battle the remaining zombies, transport of delight home and maybe beyond.

Tempting to go for some of the exotic bottles and tins, all available to enjoy on the premises. I usually just have a nosey up and down the shelves as if I actually know what I'm looking for. I sometimes throw in a random pub to keep me eye in. The Coachmakers opposite said bus station is always worth a pint or two.

A cackling cauldron in the 'best' room. But I'm ok with that.. Couldn't believe that the bus company changes at 9pm or summat, so the fareday becomes defunkt. Had to pay again.

I enjoyed the inside of the dog house for a day or two after I stumbled across a £6 Arriva ticket that carried me around my favourite watering holes for a day of imbibing. 10 mins walk from the front step and I was off! Actually I think it was good for the North West Midlands or some such crazy delights! Bought up front. Sent to the phone. Stored until needed. Activated when I stepped onto the bus. Good until 02.00am I think.

Summer is here so winding down the dark ales, porters and stouts and looking for a more refreshing, fruity, hoppy, zing to the occasional glass of something cold. That said a posthumous mention must go out to Tiny Rebels' Stay Puft marshmallow and chocolate porter which was unbelievably nice. It's come and gone from the Hop Inn's menu to pastures new. Godspeed. Shiny brewery from Derby offer some very good beers and I came across their Mandible Claw Mango Smoothie IPA the other day in Bottlecraft, Hanley. HELLO!! what an absolute belter! 5.2%, cloudy, mango fruity but not sweet at all with a zingy hoppy finish. Do yourselves a favour and get up there before it's gone. In fact, Bottlecraft have got a great board up at the moment; Clwb Tropicana from Tiny Rebel and the famous Neck Oil from Beavertown Brewery. Anyway, the Mandible Claw has seemingly been brewed in homage to WWE star Mick Foley who appeared as Cactus Jack, Dude Love and Mankind among other personas. His Mandible Claw finishing move was upgraded to involve a sock puppet and nicknamed "Mr Socko". Everyday's a school day. Attachment Deleted

The Beavertown Brewery is owned by Robert Plant's son {he of the Zepp}. Just a bit of triv. I know it's popular amongst the kids but I've never been drawn to their gawdy cans.

Bottlecraft up Hanley. Black Iris brewery, Nottingham. Stab in the dark NZ stout 5%. I've been sampling more summery ales recently but came across this stout. Apparently they've added hops, or more hops, or hops later in the brew or summat because it's has a nice hoppy-ish finish which might sound odd for a stout but it works. The other reason I liked it was because it was 2 quid a pint !! Two British pounds for a pint of 5% real ale. Bottlecraft have Snakes Eyes, another Black Iris brew which is 3.8% hoppy pale. Golden, citrus, bit of a zing. Very nice. Guess what? 2 quid a pint !! If you want a session (ale) but not to get as drunk as to forget where you left the wife this one is worth the shoe leather.
